Without fiscal conservatives and libertarians the Republican party is nothing.
The GOP simply can not win an election--any election--without support from social conservatives. They are the backbone of the party. And the increasingly imperious and intractable tone of the "moderate" wing of the party is causing a huge problem right now.
In New Jersey, we've seen an major increase in the amount of antipathy the GOP displays toward social conservatives. In 2001, the 'fiscal conservatives and libertarians' helped torpedo a brilliant true conservative (fiscal and social) candidate in Bret Schundler. Some of the typical RINOs publicly endorsed Jim McSleazy over Schundler. It was from that moment on that I decided that I will never again vote for a candidate who is not a social conservative. I'm far from the only one. The result is that we now have no Republicans in major state-wide offices.
And if you can find two libertarians who have the same platform on any 5 issues, let me know. Most of them have an ideology which conforms precisely to their own idiosyncratic vices--if they do it, they want it legalized. If they don't do it, they don't. It's the perfect political ideology for the 'me' generation.

A third party is going to pull a lot more votes this November.
Maybe it will wake up the other two liberal parties that have been running things into the ground.

The LIBERALtarians are sideways rats who don't have the stomach or honesty to call themselves what they are.
ROFL!
Left-wing politicians take away your liberty in the name of children and of fighting poverty, while right-wing politicians do it in the name of family values and fighting drugs. Either way, government gets bigger and you become less free.

But I don't think their position on open borders is acceptable - ESPECIALLY today
LOL!
Republicans are in charge now. The borders are open now. Libertarians believe you can control immigration by curtailing services and employment to illegals. Republicans believe you can control immigration by granting amnesty every 20 years or so. I think the Libertarian way is more effective.

So what? He was a Democrat once too.
The Libertarian movement converted Reagan from a Liberal to a Conservative.
Does anyone in his/her right mind think Reagan would be in favor of no borders
Reagan granted amnesty to illegals and left the border open.
no drug restrictions
"Of course Dad was for legalization. He wasn't crazy, he didn't want his kids in jail!"...Michael Reagan
no laws against prostitution?
Reagan was opposed to all nanny state laws. Prostitution is a local issue. If you want prostitution in your town, that is up to the voters in your town.

The LIBERALtarians are sideways rats who don't have the stomach or honesty to call themselves what they are. I wish you people would stop repeating this canard.
Libertarians and liberals are as different as night and day.
To: Antoninus
But you're perfectly happy to use big government (i.e., the federal judiciary) to overturn locally established and implemented law. Bunch of lying phonies.
Going to the courts may not be the most prudent measure, but I fail to see how it makes the libertarian a phony.
If a libertarian is opposed to government intervention in his life, and he uses the courts to reduce government intervention in his life, where is he being inconsistent? It's like calling the Founding Fathers a bunch of phonies because they wanted a limited government, but made each branch "powerful" enough to check each other.
It's not an infringement on your liberty if you are prevented from infringing on another's liberty. Libertarians are not anarchists, so why shouldn't they rely on government's LEGITIMATE purpose, the protection of liberty?
