STOCKTON, Calif. -- The display of the Mexican flag is becoming a point of debate as protests against an immigration bill continue in Northern California and across the nation.
At almost every demonstration, a Mexican flag is waving.
When students from Stockton's Edison High School took to the streets to demonstrate, the Mexican flag was raised as a banner as traffic passed by.
"We're trying to show that Mexicans also work hard and we deserve something better than to get kicked out of here," student Ophelia Ortiz said.
"I think that (the flag) represents us by saying we are united and it doesn't matter what color we are, how we look, stuff like that," student Nadia Medina said.
At Grace Davis High School in Modesto, students held a rally on Monday, but when student Dustin McGregor held up a Confederate flag to counterprotest, he was suspended for five days.
"A person had a Mexican flag. My buddy said that should be an American flag. The dude looked at us and somebody in the crowd said 'F---- America,' and that upset me, so I got that flag," McGregor said.
School officials said Confederate flags are prohibited on campus because they are associated with racism. But McGregor's father said that wasn't the intent.
"Basically, all he was saying is this was America and you shouldn't down-talk America," Rich McGregor said.
Meanwhile, across the country large crowds have waved the Mexican flag while protesting, drawing mixed reactions from those who see the images.
"That personally doesn't bother me, but if they are here illegally they shouldn't have the same rights as we do," an unidentified woman said.
"It brings to my mind that they are not trying to assimilate themselves into this culture. If the Mexican culture is what they predominately want to be part of ... I'm afraid of that," an unidentified man said.
More open minded tolerance from the left.

It would have been great to see every student come out with a Confederate flag and see the school suspend everyone. It wouldn't happen. The schools get money for each day a student is in school. It would hit them hard in the pocketbook.
This country is screwed up, or at least these idiotic government schools.

If your here legaly and want to be American then you have nothing to worry about. But if you want to push Mexico on America then go home. I would not expect Mexico to react any different to Americans who were in there country pushing America on them.
I associate the Mexican buzzard flag with racism and Aztec human sacrifice. There's symbolism in that flag
I am beginning to think we are headed for an all-out insurrection with this massive invasion of these hate mongers.

As a southerner, I find this so offensive. A so called "educator" doesn't know the difference between racism and the whole Confederate concept. It's such a denigration of millions of southerners.

This is silly. If we're going to prohibit the Confederate flags, it should be because of its association with treason against the United States of America.
