Miller Brewing Co. put out an unusual one-page advertisement in Thursday's edition of Hoy in Chicago. The headline reads: "Miller Brewing Company se opone a la legislación HR4437 contra la inmigración" (Miller Brewing Company Opposes HR4437 Anti-Immigration Legislation). The ad is in response to growing support to boycott Miller products after a group of pro-immigrant organizations in Chicago found out the company has contributed to the political campaign of Republican Sen. James Sensenbrenner, of Wisconsin. The senator is behind the HR4437 bill, which calls for strengthening the anti-immigration laws in the United States, including the construction of a wall along...

Mayra Hernandez and Lesly Hernandez planned to look pretty for the Ennis High School senior prom on Saturday night. But they won't be going because they joined a protest. "We all bought dresses, accessories, and we rented a limo and all that," Mayra said. "Now all that money is just going to waste." Thousands of North Texas students skipped classes this week to demonstrate against the immigration bill now being considered by the U.S. Congress. About 130 Ennis ISD students—from sixth graders to seniors—joined in Thursday, despite a school district warning that any student participating would be suspended until Monday,...

E-mail Author Author Archive Send to a Friend Version March 28, 2006, 7:22 a.m. Illegals vs. Enforcement The protesters in the street get it. Does Congress? Advocates for illegal immigration might have trouble ginning up much support for their cause if they didn’t have recourse to a handy expedient: constantly importing more supporters. Every day that more illegal immigrants arrive in this country is a day that the constituency for defying our immigration laws grows larger. Illegals demonstrated that last weekend when they swelled the ranks of anti-enforcement protesters in a Los Angeles rally estimated at 500,000, and in...

STOCKTON, Calif. -- The display of the Mexican flag is becoming a point of debate as protests against an immigration bill continue in Northern California and across the nation. At almost every demonstration, a Mexican flag is waving. When students from Stockton's Edison High School took to the streets to demonstrate, the Mexican flag was raised as a banner as traffic passed by. "We're trying to show that Mexicans also work hard and we deserve something better than to get kicked out of here," student Ophelia Ortiz said. "I think that (the flag) represents us by saying we are united...

Most Americans I talked to in California summed up their reactions to the marches as something like, 'Why would anyone wave the flag of the country that they would never return to--and yet scream in anger at those with whom they wish to stay?' Depending on the particular questions asked, polls reveal that somewhere around 60-80% of the public is vehemently opposed to illegal immigration. -snip- There are over 300 million resident Americans, and the vast majority of them are citizens. Had the demonstrators marched chanting "God Bless America," confined their flag waving to Old Glory, and expressed thanks to...

The Stars and Stripes have been replaced by the Mexican flag at Chasewood North, and residents of the condominium community off Central Boulevard are puzzled as to who made the switch. "I woke up Sunday morning and looked up from my patio and then realized that the American flag wasn't on the flagpole," said Sue Miller a Chasewood North board member. "What captured my attention were the colors — at first I thought it was an Italian flag, but one of our residents said it was the Mexican flag. "I went to the flagpole, to see if the American flag...

FORT WORTH — An illegal immigrant in federal custody since his arrest early this month on traffic warrants was arrested Thursday in connection with a string of rapes and other sexual attacks dating back to December 2004, police said. His hands and legs shackled, Jose Carrillo, 30, was transported from federal custody Thursday afternoon and arrested by Fort Worth police on warrants in two of the Fort Worth rapes. Police say DNA evidence linked Carrillo to the two attacks, in addition to a rape in Arlington. When asked by reporters if he committed the offenses, Carrillo said no, adding that...

Tensions over immigration reform heightened in the Phoenix area's East Valley Thursday when students raised a Mexican flag over Apache Junction High School — and then other students yanked it down and burned it. "I know (they) shouldn't have burned the Mexican flag," said Jacob Stewart, a 16-year-old sophomore. "I heard it was raised above the American flag and that just irked me." He said the turbulence was tied to debates going on in the state Legislature and Congress, where ideas ranging from offering illegal immigrants a chance at citizenship to making them felons are being floated. Freshman Chelsea Garcia,...

A mob scene unfolded at Oceanside High School on Mission Avenue Wednesday morning when about 200 students tried to leave campus, only to be blocked by police officers toting pepper-spray pellet guns and wearing riot gear. The scene at the campus subsided as school let out this afternoon and protesting students headed for the Oceanside Bandshell at the beach. Three boys have been arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly throwing chunks of concrete at officers during the incident at the school. Tensions arose at the school just before noon, when several hundred students tried to...

CBS) HUNTINGTON PARK, Calif. Some 150 Huntington Park High School students left their classrooms and are marching east along Firestone Boulevard in South Gate to protest an immigration bill due before Congress on Monday. About 9 a.m., students walked out of the school in the 6000 block of Miles Avenue. Friday’s march comes a day before a larger rally planned in L.A. tomorrow, when immigrant-rights groups will gather to protest the legislation of HR 4427. Thousands of students took to streets again Tuesday in Western states to protest proposed toughening of immigration laws but law enforcement authorities began cracking down by rounding up demonstrators as truants and issuing citations. Small numbers of arrests were reported. "We're not going to allow lawbreaking to take on a new dimension," Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca said after a second day of students roaming streets and attempting to march onto freeways - a dangerous tactic that alarmed officials. "When kids are walking on freeways, that's not free speech," said Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. Some 11,600 students cut...

The Roman Catholic Church, dozens of grass-roots coalitions and Spanish-language radio disc jockeys have helped fuel protests nationwide against congressional efforts to tackle illegal immigration.... The Catholic Church has played a key role in opposing legislation to restrict immigration and rallying protesters.... "As we've been able to reach more and more people, they're waking up to the ills of the proposals made to date and seeing the need to be vocal about the kinds of reforms that would be more acceptable," said Mark D. Franken, executive director of migration and refugee services for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.... The...

Most Americans see first-hand the disastrous impact of illegal immigration on our wallets, wages and culture. The annual entry of more than 1 million illegal aliens from around the world, better than 30 percent of them Mexicans sneaking across our southern border, obviously undercut homeland-security efforts. Yet more Americans must understand that Mexico's government, far from being a friend, is actively working to subvert our country's laws and political institutions. Not since the heyday of expansionist Soviet communism has there been such an organized effort to undermine our nation. If our borders are not controlled and immigration law enforced, will...
