Academic freedom under siege from right
Baltimore Sun ^ | 2/28/06 | LIONEL S. LEWIS

Posted on 03/02/2006 1:56:04 PM PST by mathprof

On the Web site of an unofficial alumni organization at the University of California, Los Angeles, there are profiles "exposing" the university's "most radical professors" who "actively proselytize their extreme views in the classroom." These professors are described as "brainless" and are berated for never having left the "fantasy world of college."

[snip] There are other disturbing examples today and throughout history.

In Colorado and Indiana, as a result of widely publicized student allegations of left-wing bias in the classroom, several professors have received hate mail and at least one received a death threat. The number of organizations across America whose purpose is to monitor professors has been growing, and they each employ similar scare tactics.

The harassment of academics based on their political views has begun to exact a toll on campus life. Suspicion and distrust, always a part of campus culture, have been exacerbated. The number of grievances and lawsuits on campuses has grown exponentially. American campuses are under siege just as they were during the McCarthy era. [snip]

Last spring, a Yale professor, anthropologist David Graeber, was notified that his contract would not be renewed. He claimed it was because he was a publicly visible anarchist. A Columbia University assistant professor of anthropology, Nicholas De Genova, who remarked in a "teach-in" that he wished the Iraq war would involve "a million Mogadishus," in reference to the 1993 conflict in Somalia in which 18 U.S. soldiers were killed, was publicly chastised by the university president and provost. [snip]

In truth, the American campus is a healthy mix of different opinions, cultures and viewpoints. I hope that it will remain so, despite those who would impose political bounties on anyone - professor or student - who might wish to pursue ideas and speak their mind.

The last paragraph is a joke (or it should be).

I feel that they should be permitted to say what's on their mind.... And we should be permitted to ridicule them when they do. That's what freedom of expression is all about.

Curious, by what right do the losers on the Left abuse their authority in the class room to ram their political views down paying students mouths? That is not "Academic Freedom" that is Political Indoctrination. If the ideologies were reversed the Scumbag Journalists would be screaming bloody murder.

This is almost as bad as that alternative SF bookstore that banned books from authors they deemed "fascists."

The argument progressive moonbats throw out are as hilarious and the muslims':

Outright lies, improbable logic and ignorance in equal parts.

"Newspeak" on the hoof, as it were.
Not many people, however, have heard of "Newspeak", where words are hijacked to mean the opposite of their historic meaning.

"In truth, the American campus is a healthy mix of different opinions, cultures and viewpoints."

It looks like the author is "brainless" -- but at least he has something in common with most of the professors.

The last paragraph is a joke (or it should be).

The last paragraph is an outright lie by the libs. I was listening to Hannity today regarding the college kid that taped his professor going off on Bush (he will be on Hannity and Combs TV tonight) and a caller responded by saying the professor should not be fired but should be encouraged to question everything including Bush. The class was GEOGRAPHY!!

There are too many examples of these so called "self inflicted hate-crimes". I am sorry, but it will be very hard for me to view any death threat and not suspect that the threat came from the recipient.

It is scarier than you describe: The did Hannity was referring to was a 10th grade high school student.

HS students are a lot more vulnerable than college students.

What if this guy had Hitler and Pol Pot on his website? Then could we point that out? I guess Che and Lenin are PC murderers though, so he must be left alone.

It was the radical left that decided it was okay to censor 'hate speech', which means anything they don't like. They invited a response in-kind.

I agree. They imagine hate crimes against them as a defense. If anything, the left is guilty of more hate crimes than the right is.

Democrats who hate President Bush are so filled with hate they must think their hate is now normal behavior. Well, I guess it is..... for them.

I don't advocate threats or violence against these people. Not only is it wrong, but we don't need to stoop to their level.

However, it's gratifying to see academics elite getting knocked off their ivory tower.
