It would be a shame if it were carrying Russian military advisors.

Here's a list of Iranian aircraft.
http://www.reference.com/browse/wiki/Islamic_Republic_of_Iran_Air_Force
Something I forgot was that they were supposed to co develop and finance the F-18 program before the Shah was deposed and they were going to buy F-16s. Those deals were canceled.
They currently keep their pre revolution US supplied aircraft flying by cannibalizing other aircraft, locally making parts, and through black market acquisitions. Safety and reliability doesn't seem to be the watchwords there, just get them in the air. We now see the results of that.

AP headline:
Military Plane Carrying 94 Crashes in Iran
AP would have us believe that it was probably a U.S. military plane! Misleading headline! It was an Iranian military plane.

The building was reported to be on fire, and fire fighters were on the scene working to save people trapped in the building in the Azari residential district.
The C-130 aircraft hit the building while coming in to land at Tehran's Mehrabad airport, state television reported.
The plane, which belonged to the Army's air force, was carrying 84 passengers and 10 crew, the report said.
State television said the plane crashed because of a technical failure as it was trying to make an emergency landing.
The plane crashed into the Towhid residential complex.
It reportedly had taken off from Mehrabad airport and was heading to Bandar Abbas, a port city in southern
Iran.

A snip from the BBC's latest article regarding the crash.
Officials blame the high frequency of crashes on a lack of aviation spare parts due to American sanctions.
Nah, it's Allah's will.

The BBC seems to be updating w/ info fairly quickly.
{snip} The plane was due to fly from Tehran to Bandar Abbas in the north-west of Iran. Passengers are said to have included a group of journalists sent to cover military exercises there.

Bandar Abbas is on the coast near where the earthquake was centered on Qeshm Island about 10 days ago. The plane was probably transporting people to and from the quake area.
