"And let's work to make it 8 million next year...." YES lets make it happen. People need to know what the NRA stands for and there are a lot of gun owners that are excellent citizens that aren't members. Some of them think they have to send in a lot of money and they don't. I send some when I can and I'm a life member. I'm one of those bean and cornbread members Wayne has talked about. I don't send as much as I should though I send more than I can sometimes. We all make it happen because we are the NRA, all of the members. We believe in the Constitution all of it not just the Second Amendment. We do believe that the Second Amendment guards the whole Constitution. God Bless America and all of us. All four million of us are the NRA and I wish it was eight million so we would be a stronger influence.

""We’re exploring every legal option available to protect the rights of lawful people in New Orleans," Cox said, "and we’re taking steps to overturn such laws in every state where they exist.""

I think we need a new approach to deal with this gun-grabbing problem.

There is one way to make them think twice right off the bat:

Can't answer that one except to say your guns will be where you left them when you get back. If you evacuate voluntarily you can put one in the glove box and recover the rest when you get back, assuming you have a place left to go back to.

I am also not going to be surprised when it comes to a neighborhood near me. You should not be either.

Just wait until the next disaster when the gun-grabbing goes nationwide.

You said it. NOs action is complete Barbara Streisand! We must not let this stand. Bush should address this.

There's a lesson to be learned here

Yeah, the lesson is that the military and police WILL follow orders to confiscate guns. I guess we shouldn't be that surprised since this is the historical norm. America was always the abberation.

If you're involved in a natural disaster you have to take the initiative to protect the right to defend your property

You can't survive going solely defensive. Eventually, you have to go on offense in any SHTF situation or you will be surrounded and trapped.

If that means hiding your weapons from the authorities to keep them then so be it

If a people are to remain Free, eventually they will have to stand up and say "No, you thugs! You can't have my guns". That's what happened at Lexington when 77 patriots were outnumbered 10:1. They had the guts to line up and tell the bastards "no".

Alternatively, people can hide their guns. That's what the Poles did. Things didn't work out so well for them.

(On a side note, you made reference to the "authorities" being the state. In a Free society, the "authorities" are We the People. Not the state, nor agents of the state.)

I live in Maryland where we have some of the most restrictive gun laws in the nation. I have seen VERY little the NRA has done to help us here

To be honest with you, there is very little they CAN do without grassroots support. Kinda like a heterosexual activist group demanding a ban of homosexuality in San Francisco.........There are certain places in this country where it is not financially feasible to expend both manpower and money in an attempt to sway the minds of hard core socialists and unfortunately Maryland is one of those places........

My advice to you is if you feel so strongly about your 2nd Amendment rights, contact the NRA and see what you can do in your state to promote our agenda........

I don't disagree with anything you say. It's unfortunate that our government decided to disarm law abiding citizens. I look forward to NRA action in the courts on this issue. If that fails, the second amendment will be worthless. We'll have to see where we go from there. I'm hopeful however that a precedent can legally be set.

the NRA cannot help you, you need to vote for people that support the 2nd amendment
You get what you vote for, just ask the people of NOLA

"It has been amply demonstrated that the "government" hasn't been able to protect law abiding citizens in New Orleans from death, rape, robbery etc.......(among other debacles)...."

As I noted on a related thread for those who put their personal protection into the hands of the authorities in a time of natural or man-made disaster, at best you'll be disappointed and at worst you'll be dead.

BTW...I'm assuming you have firearms of a larger caliber than a "squirt-gun" for those times right? ;)

I was wondering if and when the NRA would rouse from their slumber on this...

Since they weren't in Court bright and early this morning, I'd say they were still shaking off the sleep.

CNN didn't hesitate before heading for court to protect their (non-existant) right to take pictures of dead bodies they could blame on Bush. What's keeping the NRA? I'm sure they could find a citizen or three in NOLA that would like their rights protected, NOW, not next week.

When I lived in Colorado and was more active in the political arena the GOA was much more vocal and visible than the NRA. It's a shame cause the NRA has the funds and the visibility to make a real difference in these cases.

I think I just wont answer the door.

That's fine, they'll open it for you. Of course the lock and frame will never be the same after that.
