Let Them Rent Limos

Let them rent limos

One of the messages I've been receiving is that those people in New Orleans have only themselves to blame. They should have left when the evacuation was ordered.

For some that is probably true. New Orleans is a laid-back city. But for many, being told to evacuate was like being told to flap their wings and fly. Nearly one in four residents is below the poverty line. Many don't have cars.

Yet the evacuation plan was based on private autos. There was no mechanism to evacuate those without cars, much less those in nursing homes and hospitals.

Have they no cars? Let them rent limos.

It is no accident that the poor weren't included in evacuation plans, if anything that can seriously be called a plan exists.

I sent him a letter pointing out the evacuation plan made provisions for the poor and a picture of the flooded buses. His response avoided the issue:

...this is a statement, not a plan. Who's in charge of making it happen? How do they communicate with each other and with the potential clients. How is it going to work. If an architect tells me my house will have bathrooms, that doesn't make it happen

It would be assumed that people would at least have a transistor radio. It's totally in Nagin's lap that he didn't muster the buses and announce on the radio where to catch one.

Of course he ignored you. His agenda won't allow him to acknowledge the abandoned school buses.

Who's in charge of making it happen?

That gets to the heart of the problem. Democrats were in charge of making it happen. Democrats have had a lock on Louisiana politics for over 100 years.

And Democrats cannot manage a durn thing. Worst administrators in the world -- because they don't "plan" so much as "wish" for things to work out OK.

The over hyping by the media of every hurricane probably took away from the urgency of the situation. Crying wolf to often has played a role in this, IMHO.

"Let Them Rent Limos"

This reminded me of Tuh-ray-za Heinz's comment: "Let them go naked" after Hurricane Ivan in 2004.

Who's in charge of making it happen? That would be the mayor, not the federal government . . .

Someone really should E-mail several photos of "Nagin's Navy" buses flooded and parked a mile and a half way from the Superdome.

Then as him why the MAYOR didn't utilize them. I know it's not an election year, but every elction, those buses are used to take "helpless" New Orleaneans to the polls.

Jack.

The site of those buses just sitting there while people were dying is revolting...
Was the Mayors house safe and sound or when did he turn tail and run, leaving those less fortunate behind???
