Vanity: Open letter to FEMA and Bush..declare a NATIONAL emergency
lots | August 28, 2005 | me

Posted on 08/28/2005 3:24:16 AM PDT by janetjanet998

I have never seen any thing like this in my 20 years of storm following....nor do i recall such a potential in history..

we have the worst case scenario times 10.even the "big one" everyone talked about was even assuming a much smaller cane area wise..

the storm is huge...like 2-3 times the size of andrew and maybe almost just as strong...it is hitting at the worst possibe angle for NOLA and size the eye is so large ,30 miles across, the MS coast will get it too...it will affect many more people that Andrew did..hurricane force winds are 150 miles wide and exspanding... Andrew was very small and jogged south and hit then less populated areas of miami then into the bare swamps...storm surge with will be huge may go miles inland in places

its large so it will take awhile to spin down producing many tornnadoes and flooding inland

Declare a national emergency...get the military ready for rescue then clean up

I never thought i would see a bigger news story in my life then 9-11....this could be it...its picking up speed and many people will still be stuck on the roads when it nears..plus it is so big wind/rain many hours ahead of it will not help with the traffic...

I guarantee nothing, and that's the point. Noone can. I do not live in a risk-free area - we have fires and floods and small 'quakes, just like a lot of folks. I knew this when I chose to live here. It's my call, and I will not ask you to pay for my risk.

As far as the job, I am happy to report that the business is booming, and we ARE hiring...but no guarantees.

Your argument just sounds so "cold" at this moment in time when so many souls are at risk.

Louisiana has an offshore pipeline. You can dock in the Gulf miles offshore and offload your tanker unlike in Alaska.

Don't get me wrong, this is a very bad storm, but 99% of the people who will die are those who make foolish mistakes about not evacuating.

How are poor people with no car, no money, and no place to go--going to leave EVERYTIME a hurricane MIGHT hit them?

You try walking out of a city like NO with everything you can save on your back every time a Hurricane is in the area--

And to where? To sleep on some park bench while your home is looted?

And could they afford to leave even the ONE time a major hit seems certain,--

By the time a major hit seems certain, it's too late to get out of a place like New Orleans, especially when you are poor.

Well I went through three hurricanes last year and never asked for any help from anyone. I could have gotten free ice, water, red cross food and FEMA money had I applied for it. I do choose to live here but I accept the risks as well and don't expect anyone to pay for my choices.

"Pittsburgh here."

Mars here. I sure hope the folks down in Etna, Millvale, and Sharpsburg get a pass on this one. It's bad enough that they are in Allegheny County, let alone getting whacked by flooding in 2 consecutive years. Pray that it misses us and Ben stops missing receivers...

Wonder if the USA will get all the help the TSUAMI countries did

Don't bet on it

If this thing hits like they are predicting loss of live in NO will be catastrophic

I guess it must, and I apologize for that. I am not lacking in sympathy, I assure you.

I keep all the victims in my prayers, and when my finances allow it, chip in monetarily when I can (the difference between FEMA and charity being one of choice).

How are YOU paying for my choice? Make that lame statement when you pay out the almost 10k a year we pay for insurance.

I'm sure your state receives federal money for many BS projects, get over it.

Good for you. I can remember as a kid in SW Virginia when an ice storm (early '80s) dropped so many trees on our road that it took us a week to cut our way out. Electricity and phones were out for three weeks, and the water (we had a spring-fed system from high on the mountain) froze. Thankfully, we had wood stoves, plenty of wood, a fast-running stream and plenty of gas for the chainsaw.

FEMA, like all things Washington, is taxpayer funded. I'm sure your state receives federal money for many BS projects, get over it.

Yup, and I object strenuously to that, too.

Are you saying this is the perfect storm?

There won't be any park benches--there won't be any homes to loot and there won't be any looters if this fills up the city with 20 feet of water

Where do you live that is resistant to all forces of nature? Earthquakes, flooding, tornados, fires, snow storms, lightning, hurricanes, etc happen all over this country every year. Please tell us so we can all move to your neighborhood and live a carefree life

This is one of many reasons we are overpopulated, and should end further population growth by ending immigration.

There is only so much top real estate in this country,--

And as population grows from immigration, a diminishing percentage of Americans are able to live in the best and safest places.

And this is just one example how immigration makes us less prosperous.

I would also suggest relaxing more cutting restrictions in the national forest system to accomodate the severe pressures on the lumber trade certain to follow this mess. Andrew brought a whole new level to building prices last time, so being a little more proactive this time make sense.

Well, I'm not convinced the earth itself is overpopulated, nor the US, but I certainly agree that illegal immigration must stop.

There won't be any park benches

Even if they walk to Texas?

After going through a few hurricanes, more than I want, Katrina went by about 15 miles from our door when it went over Florida, there isn't much you can do until afterward. Most preparations have had to have been well in advance, such as staging relief supplies and personnel, now is the time to get out.

I used to live in Biloxi, all you can do is RUN from this storm. After the storm passes there are plenty of things that can be done.

But, I thought LA and MS have already declared emergencies Saturday, and Bush has followed with his declarations shortly after that.

This storm is definitely a runner, get out, go north. For NO this looks like the big one.
