US spy chiefs ordered agents to deliver Osama bin Laden's severed head in a box of dry ice and hoist heads of other Al-Qaeda leaders on pikes, a retired field officer has disclosed.
As America reeled in shock days after the September 11 attacks in 2001, former CIA officer Gary Schroen was sent to Afghanistan to help the opposition Northern Alliance to topple bin Laden's hosts the Taliban.
He told National Public Radio in an interview broadcast on Monday and Tuesday that he stopped by the office of then-CIA counterterrorism director Cofer Black for final instructions.
He said he was told: "'your basic marching orders are to link up with the Northern Alliance and get their cooperation militarily and they will take on the Taliban.
"'When we break the Taliban, your job is to capture bin Laden, kill him and bring his head back in a box full of dry ice.'"
Schroen was also ordered to kill other al-Qaeda leaders suspected in the plot, which saw terrorists slam planes into the New York's World Trade Center and the Pentagon, killing nearly 3,000 people.
t was the first time in 30 years with the CIA he had been ordered to set out to kill a target rather than try to bring them in alive, Schroen told NPR's Morning Edition program.
He said he told Black, '"Sir, those are the clearest orders I have ever received, I can certainly make pikes out in the field but I don't know what I'll do about dry ice to bring the head back but we will manage something."
A week after the September 11 attacks, President George W. Bush told reporters he wanted Osama bin Laden and recalled Wild West posters that demanded suspects "dead or alive."
But the suspected terror mastermind was never caught and Schroen told NPR that CIA operatives found it hard to get close enough to strike bin Laden, partly due to his ability to move quickly around the country.
"We had could never tell where the man was going to be that night," Schroen, who is promoting a new book and believes bin Laden is now hiding out in tribal areas of Pakistan, told NPR.
Schroen, now 63, and his six-man team were among the first Americans into Afghanistan after September 11, and his book "First In" relates his dangerous mission behind enemy lines.
Coming from the French Press...... I doubt it..
Coming from our failed CIA........ I doubt it..
Looks like this clown failed in his "clearest assignment ever"...

How does this story square with the early report out of the Afghanistan war that a team had Bin Laden sighted, but, had to wait for the go ahead for a kill from DC? Book hype?
I'd rather see his head packed in pig entrails. ;)
Most people feel it's their duty to do their job and then retire. N'uff said.
's brewing tale tales again.
Sounds like a boatload of BS to me. No doubt we wanted Bin Laden dead still do, but this isnt the type of order that would be given.

In any case it would make a real nice display at the Smithsonian.
Jack Bauer would have brought UBL's head back on ice and his nuts back in a Crown Royal bag.
Sounds like a worthwhile order to follow. I'd prefer al-Zawhari in the same deal.
Author is promoting his new book on NPR
Though this probably did reflect quite accurately the feeling of the administration of the Nation at the time, this seems pretty unlikely. Dry ice would be a bit hard to come by in Afganistan, and an operator like Black would know that.
Hell, your average NPR listener is probably more weary of a CIA field operative than they are of OBL.
....in the Smithsonian display case right next to John Dillinger's penis....
(//Urban Legend!)
Yeah, but it's the thoguht that counts.
Stuff it in Osamas mouth to save space.
Great graphic!
Good job.
Ping.
Yes: In one of the Smithsonians urinals.
That's a GREAT picture... Do you have a larger version of it? I would really like to print that off and take it in to work. I know my co-workers would get a kick out of it.
It's probably BS, but not that deep down I hope he DID say it.
(Sorry, dont know who to credit).
LMAO......Awww come on we always dropped into the Christians In Action DO's office when we were sheep dipped. Such a nice host he was for our unannounced visits with mint cocoa latte, biscoti and or crossants.....while he personally was giving us our marching orders etc etc ....< /BS>
Stay safe RR !
Schroen + NPR + new book = BULLSHIT.
"hoist heads of other Al-Qaeda leaders on pikes" has been printed here on FR many times already. Maybe this spy was a lurker........:o)
Once again we'er ahead of the curve!
Great animation scene.
Well, an order is an order. Go get 'em boys!
When I was going through infantry training at Ft Lewis, Wash., circa 1967, one of the trainers was a grizzled old sergeant who had been in the Green Berets. The story on him was that he'd been booted out of Viet Nam (4th or 5th tour)by the Commanding General of Viet Nam because he'd cut the heads off of several NVA regular troops and hoisted them on wooden pikes. The heads were placed in a circle around the green beenie position. This perimeter was large enough to keep the NVA from counter-attacking because of their own superstitions. Obviously, it was an effective tactic. Too bad PC reared it's ugly head even back in 1965 or 66. Needless to say, the trainees I was with all paid close attention to what he was teaching us.
that was when SlickWillie was squatting in the WhiteHouse and it happened TWICE if i remember right...
Well, YOU must have been "special"!
The only thing they ever brought us was grief...

I think that's an Eddie Izzard routine.
Bring it back in...yellow snow, perhaps?...
Add me to the admirers. Helped me end the day with a great big smile.
Been to an ROC FSB ONCE...nasty place with the same philosophy
Just think what they would do to that SF NCO in this war..
Look what they did to a couple lower ranking EMs..reservists no less..just for putting female's skivvies on a couple of deserving tangos cabasas...
Yo!
Yes, you are right. They would've keelhauled him and locked him away under Leavenworth or worse.
I heard one yarn on the ROC's that were based around DaNang. As the story went, there was so little enemy activity around Da Nang that the US gov't threatened to withdraw the combat pay of troops stationed there. Supposedly, the ROCs were told about this dastardly deed the gub'mint boys were about to do, so they went up on Marble Mountain and mortared the US base. The US troops kept their combat pay. I never had any contact with the ROCs but heard more than a few times that they were vicious yet effective fighters, that they were not to be messed with.
This story was told a few years ago in Bob Woodward's book, "Bush at War" without the dry ice bit. (That could be an embelishment.) In Woodward's telling, bin Laden's head was to be delivered to the President on a platter.
Nice touch. I have fond memories of Crown Royal bags...
I'm glad the meme is replicating!
Justice must not only be done, but be SEEN to be done.
Amen!

Coming from NPR.......
Ya beat me to it...
Yeah, those bastards too!
When I get too tired on a long drive - I'll search for NPR just to get the blood flowing again...
A POX on their asses...

Whether true or not, it sounds like a good idea to me. In fact, if the enemy feels like living in the 12th century, we should treat them as such.
