DeLay tackles 'liberal media, out of control judges' in home turf
By: SESHADRI KUMAR , Editor
House Majority Leader Tom DeLay of Sugar Land was in his elements at the Sugar Land Rotary Club last week as he spelled out his views on issues ranging from "how to fight the liberal media" and the "out of control" judges to the ethics violation charges and his leadership role in the Congress to social security reforms and tax reforms.
Responding to the standing ovation, DeLay said "I wish some in the national media had seen the warm welcome. It would have helped me a little bit in today's environment."
Describing the new 109th Congress as a dream come true, DeLay said "I have been living for and working for this my entire career."
"To have a Senate that can pass legislation and the incredible moral leadership of the President matched up with the House is a dream come true," he said, adding the current Congress has the most ambitious agenda in 20 years.
The House passed a law suit reform legislation every year, but not in the Senate. It has been 10 years since the federal government last raised the taxes, DeLay said.
"Security, prosperity and family" are the basic tenets of the Republican agenda, he said.
"Security without strong economy is impossible and we want to double the economy in the next 10 years," DeLay said.
Listing the burden of taxes as an obstacle in the way of economic reform, DeLay said he supports fair tax. He clearly favors a national sales tax in place of the existing income tax. "Then, we will become a tax haven for the world," he said.
Stressing on regulatory reforms, DeLay said businesses spend $800 billion a year to comply with federal regulations. A 10 percent cut would save $80 billion a year, he said.
Redesigning the government to do things that make sense is another part of the agenda and the government reform includes overhauling the social security, he said.
The House Appropriations Committee rules have been changed to ensure that it is harder to spend and easy to cut spending, DeLay said.
"Family is the foundation of this country and we will fight back all the attacks on the family," he said.
Supporting marriage as between man and a woman is one of them. Fighting pornography is another. Fighting back judicial activism is the next.
"We have unaccountable, out of control judiciary. We are after them," DeLay said.
"The Constitution gives us (Congress) the responsibility to create courts. If we can create them, we can uncreate them," he said.
DeLay made a special mention of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court in California, that is in favor of taking God out of the Pledge of Allegiance and said the House adopted a bill to break that court into two and make the meet in Guam.
Commenting on Terri Schiavo's case, DeLay said the courts did a disservice to her. He believed in erring on the cause of life.
"If we can allow Scot Peterson (who murdered his pregnant wife), to be heard in federal court, my God, why not Terri Schiavo," he asked.
During the question and answer session, one member asked if then Attorney General Janet Reno could send the ATF agents to save the child Elian Gonzalez, why not do the same for Terri.
"Nobody is asking the President to do anything illegal.
We are a nation of laws. As unfortunate as the case is, nobody is asking the President to break the law. What Reno did was illegal. Terri's legacy (on the right to die) will remain. Now, the Pope needs to be fed through a tube. Should we be deciding his future?" DeLay said. On Jesse Jackson taking the same stand as DeLay on Terri Schiavo's case, DeLay said "I am happy for anyone to help in this issue."
DeLay gave an elaborate response to a question on "how can he help fight the liberal media.."
"There is a concerted, publicly announced strategy. It is not about me, but what I stand for and I have accomplished. I just happen to be the focus. It is a huge fight. George Soros is behind this and millions of dollars have been raised. But, they have a problem. They can't find anything that I have done wrong," De Lay said.
One of the lawsuits brought against him was that "he was conspiring to defeat Democrats."
"Yes. It cost me $600,000 to fight the case," DeLay said. "If I spend money on lawyers, I won't have time and money for the Republican Party.," he said.
DeLay maintained that the ethics charges brought against him by former Congressman Chris Bell have been "dismissed." If Bell had remained in the Congress, he would have been censured for filing baseless charges, he said.
Turning to the current reports on alleged ethics violations in his foreign trips, DeLay said he had an international responsibility and he worked with conservative groups in Britain, France and even Russia, from where he helped many Jewish families get out. His South Korean trip was paid by an exchange group, he said. I travel a for a reason, the reason the national media hates. Because of the extreme scrutiny, we make sure every step I do take is checked by several lawyers to ensure that I don't break the law. The more they attack, the stronger I get," DeLay said.
On the issue of illegal immigration, DeLay's remedy is to "enforce the law."
"You can never build a wall high enough to prevent the immigrants from Mexico. The eyes and ears of our military can be used to protect the borders. I support the President's guest worker program. It is not an amnesty. It is for those who come here legally."
Amazing the impression honest reporting can give.
I can't wait for those liberal judges to be hauled in front of Congress. Go Tom Go!
Question, if I may. I recall reading that part of the reason the Dems feel that Delay is vulnerable is because in the 2004 election, his vote % went down..he won 54-46..was this as a result of the redistricting the GOP put through..was DeLay's dsitrict weakened for the GOP in order to shore up the adjacant districts?
DeLay is a national treasure; our treasure.
ping
DeLay's current district is about 40-43% Dem and about 57% Republican after redistricting. He gave up some good conservative area to help with redistricting instead of playing safe for his own welfare. (SURPRISING PHILOSOPHY FOR A POLICITIAN BUT NOT FOR A TRUE LEADER).
He got about 55% in the last election because the liberal teachers unions and some minorities went against him and the Houston Chronicle (NY TIMES SOUTHWEST) along with a local weekly rag edited by the woman who was on ABC Nightline smeared him on a daily basis with the same kind of crap they are trying to pull now. The woman editor is a Republican Precinct Chair who was censured by the County Executive Committee for her attacks and also has bragged she voted for Clinton and Perot in the past. She is tied in with several RINO's who want DeLay's job and is trying to soften him up.
Has he said they will be hauled in front of Congress?
Our Florida govt. has already put the Schiavo matter on the back burner. Tampa Tribune today's edition. www.tbo.com.
BACK BURNER - MORE PEOPLE STUCK IN FLORIDA WILL BE STARVED/DEHYDRATED EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVE NO WRITTEN DIRECTIVES!!!!! Back burner, my royal *#%
This provision for the support of the judges bears every mark of prudence and efficacy; and it may be safely affirmed that, together with the permanent tenure of their offices, it affords a better prospect of their independence than is discoverable in the constitutions of any of the States in regard to their own judges.
The precautions for their responsibility are comprised in the article respecting impeachments. They are liable to be impeached for malconduct by the House of Representatives, and tried by the Senate; and, if convicted, may be dismissed from office, and disqualified for holding any other. This is the only provision on the point which is consistent with the necessary independence of the judicial character, and is the only one which we find in our own Constitution in respect to our own judges.
The want of a provision for removing the judges on account of inability has been a subject of complaint. But all considerate men will be sensible that such a provision would either not be practiced upon or would be more liable to abuse than calculated to answer any good purpose. The mensuration of the faculties of the mind has, I believe, no place in the catalogue of known arts. An attempt to fix the boundary between the regions of ability and inability, would much oftener give scope to personal and party attachments and enmities than advance the interests of justice or the public good. The result, except in the case of insanity, must for the most part be arbitrary; and insanity, without any formal or express provision, may be safely pronounced to be a virtual disqualification
This quote is by James Madison from Federalist paper#79 so
Tom DeLay is within the law to call for investigations of the judges involved in Terri's case and if misconduct is found then they CAN be impeached and removed.

Terri ping! If anyone would like to be added to or removed from my Terri ping list, please let me know by FReepmail!
H E L P!!!!!!
Thanks for the ping, tutstar. Tom Delay is as popular as he is hated. Just an entirely different group of Americans as regards the popularity or the hatred. His popularity is concentrated in his congressional district. As a national figure, he is as villified as Newt was.
Judge Greer should be impeached. Considering his crazy rulings, it is mind-boggling that Jeb Bush and other in power have let him get away with it.
Someone please explain this to me. How is this guest worker farce "for those who come here legally"? I thought the ones who are here legally stood in line and waited their turn, they did not jump the border. I'm not buying it Tom and neither is the majority of the country. How can he advocate reigning in judges whose rulings don't reflect the will of the people while backing the illegal infiltration of our country. Tom, law-abiding Americans won't be taken for fools by the judiciary or you.
YOU BETCHA!!!! GO TOM!!!!!!!!!!
DeLay made a special mention of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court in California, that is in favor of taking God out of the Pledge of Allegiance and said the House adopted a bill to break that court into two and make the meet in Guam.I like it! hahaha!
