PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia school officials approved a policy banning the sale of carbonated soft drinks in all city schools.

Starting in July, only milk, water, fruit juice and the occasional sports drink will be available from most of the district's 740 vending machines and in its cafeterias, according to rules passed Wednesday by the School Reform Commission.

The 214,000-student district took the action following a January recommendation by the American Academy of Pediatrics that soft drinks be eliminated from schools as a way of fighting an obesity epidemic among young people.

Did they define the "occasional" sports drink? What do they mean by that, only on Wednesday, only during Lent, only during hot weather? I hate that sort of imprecision.

Have they looked around? Sorry Philly freepers but Philly could be the most disgusting city I have ever spent time in. I have never driven through such long stretches of bad neighborhoods. It really depressed me.

Why don't they allow diet drinks? They don't have any calories. Sports drinks, fruit juice, and milk have calories.

recommendation by the American Academy of Pediatrics

Your patronizing pediatrician who also snoops about gun ownership in the home.

AAP on Gun Control
"Nearly 75 percent of those surveyed strongly agreed that community efforts to enact gun control legislation should be supported by pediatricians. Fourteen percent agreed somewhat."

All through my junior high and high school years (mid-to late 60s), soda was optional, meaning that you could bring it yourself if you were so inclined, but damned if the schools were going to push it. Not a bad attitude, really.

"I've seen some very fat teachers too"
Thank you! Most of the teachers in my city look burned out and very unhealthy.Several in one high school would sell the students chocolate chip cookies, nachos and hot dogs supposedly to benefit school programs.
The nearly all black and Mexican school I am referring to has a HUGE obesity and diabetes problem yet these brilliant educators don't see the connection between these diseases and poor diets.

Fruit drinks must be of 100 percent fruit juice, with no artificial sweeteners, flavors or colors. . . . Flavored and sweetened milks are OK, but no artificial colors allowed.

So the flavorings and sweeteners are a health risk if added to fruit juice but fine if added to milk? Well, I guess Philly has never been known for producing rocket scientists.

I have never driven through such long stretches of bad neighborhoods.

That reminds me of when I got lost driving around suburban Chicago years ago....I never did find the "good part of town", and I toodled around for close to three hours.

I'm still coming to grips with the fact they have soda machines in schools in the first place.

easy--it is illegal to sell sodas in school in the first place. So, soda companies give the sodas to schools for FREE and the school makes a pure profit off them.
