Immigration-control activists announced a bill to crack down on benefits available to illegal aliens in Arkansas, the first in what is expected to be a wave of initiatives and bills following the success of a similiar proposition in Arizona in November's election.
Arkansas state Sen. Jim Holt yesterday said he will sponsor a bill in the legislature this year to deny benefits and inhibit the ability of illegal immigrants to register and vote. And state resident Joe McCutchen promised to lead a grass-roots effort to support the bill.

Is the pendulum swinging?
I have never understood why they would want to give government benefits to illegal aliens anyway. They're here ILLEGALLY! Send them home.
The only reason why they want these guys to vote is so the Dems can get elected. Give me a break.
Unless a Federal judge overturns the law...
It seems to be.
GW is walking a dangerous tightrope. If there is another serious attack, and it is found that some of the perps are illegally in the country, the failure to provide border control and support of illegals could be GWB's 'monica'. The Dems, many Republicans and much of the public would demand new leadership.

Do you have any idea of their reasoning for this?
Yet one more reason why I don't trust the government with my money.
It's pretty obvious. They convince the bleed heart voters by working on their compassion for these poor deprived folks. But their major purpose is to put another group of dependent voters on the plantation.
That's why the Democrats love illegals. As for the Republicans, they are afraid to complain, because a) the media paints them as heartless grinches; and b) it only makes all the illegals even more eager to vote for the Democrats.
Pete Wilson was thrown out of office because he supported the initiative to control illegals. And California moved solidly into the Democrat column at that point. So the Democrats do it and the Republicans don't dare protest for fear of making things even worse.
The last time an amnesty for illegals was pushed through (Republican House, Republican Senate, heading to Republican President), in 2002, it was stopped on a procedural technicality. The Senator who stopped it wasn't a Republican Senator. No, it was ole 'Sheets.' Yeh, Senator Byrd was the one who stopped it.

That explains California, a state with a very high percentage of hispanics, but it doesn't explain the nation as a whole.
I think the problem is that we haven't been vocal enough on this issue. It's the only way to turn the tide.
Hey, any port in a storm, eh?
Their reasoning:
Dems need them continue the social programs, etc. That is what Dems do. Their power is through having sub-groups that they support. Minorities groups, welfare groups, etc. That gives them votes.
Pubs need them for cheap labor to subsidize businesses, big and small. Under the guise of 'jobs Americans won't do', businesses get a blacker-inked bottom line, and the taxpayers end up paying the difference.
[It is surprising how many on FR decry social security and similar 'government' programs, but have no problem with the government subsidizing businesses at taxpayer expense. Case in point--the Pill Bill that got pushed through last term that have huge amounts of dollars to drug and insurance companies.]
I wish that were so. Unfortunately federal education and healthcare matching funds are paid for out of the federal budget. Any social security, housing, food and other payments are also paid for out of the federal budget. Everyone's income taxes foot these bills.
The pendulum is swinging in the Conservative states.
Thank God for the guts of Arizonans!
You are so right! The Left has made it clear that since
it's too difficult to get its agenda through the Legislative branch, it will enact it through the Judicial
branch -- by court decree. If you doubt it, look what
happened in California when the people tried to control
the sunami of illegals by passing Prop.187. A few pointy-
headed judges in the far-left 9th Circus Court of Appeals
overturned it. All Americans should be required to read
Robt. Bork's book, "Coercing Virtue: the Worldwide Rule
of Judges." He descibes how out-of-control activist
judges have destroyed the balance of power in our three
branches of government -- and the Constitution in the
process.
