For those who have an interest, they should read the article posted on the New York Review of Books, Volume 48, Number 13, August 9, 2001 entitled, “Camp David: The Tragedy of Errors” by Hussein Agha and Robert Malley. This article describes how the offer to the Palestinian cause was an insult to its people and Yasser Arafat.

Why send anyone on a wild goose chase? I have better things to do than read 1000 words of propaganda.
If what you say about the offer to the "palestinians" is true, that "...insult to its people and Yasser Arafat" can be summarized in a sentence or two. Why is it so hard?

"Neither President Bush nor Tony Blair, in their recent meeting at the White House, would pay their condolences to the family of Yasser Arafat. They only said their condolences to the Palestinian people and emphasized that now we have a chance for a new beginning..."

Just as we Americans would have it. We aren't sorry you are offended Akbar.....

Bwahahahahaha ... character assault for a terrorist homosexual who died of aids related disease. Character assasination for an assassin who wanted nothing less than annihilation of Jews in the Middle East. Character assassination for a freak who encouraged Palestinian Mothers to train their children to hate and blow themselves up to kill Jews. Bwahahahaha. Even Satan probably doesn't want the evil crude in Hell ... too much comeptition.

TRAVELS WITH TYRANTS:
MINISTER LOUIS FARRAKHAN'S ANTI-AMERICAN WORLD TOUR

INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION

In January 1996, Louis Farrakhan announced that he was taking the message of the Million Man March on the road in a `World Friendship Tour" of African and Middle Eastern states. In reality, however, he was embarking on a whirlwind tour of some of the world's bloodiest, most antidemocratic nations and lavishing praise on their terrorist-supporting leaders.

This report discusses the most troubling statements Farrakhan and his delegation made along its 1996 "World Friendship Tour." In the course of his 27 day trip, Farrakhan visited five countries described by the United States government as sponsors of terrorism: Libya, Iran, Iraq, Sudan and Syria. He repeatedly denounced the American government, calling it (while in Iran) "the Great Satan."

WORLD FRIENDSHIP TOUR

Louis Farrakhan kicked off his 27-day tour of Africa and the Middle East on January 17, 1996, in Accra, Ghana, along with a delegation of about 30 individuals, including Chicago Rev. Al Sampson, former Gary, IN, Mayor Thomas Barnes, Sarah Moten of the National Council of Negro Women, and former Illinois Congressman Gus Savage. Ghana has served as NOI's African base in recent years: in 1991, the group established its international headquarters in Accra, under the direction of NO1 International Minister Abdul Akbar Muhammad, and in October 1994, the city played host to NOI's semi-annual Saviour's Day Convention.

In a meeting with Ghanaian President Jerry John Rawlings, a long-time ally, Farrakhan said he hoped to keep the momentum of the Million Man March alive along his 23-country tour. "We hope to leverage the power of our unity against foreign policies that we feel aren't in the best interest of Africa and Third World countries," Farrakhan announced.

NIGERIA

In one of the first stops along his trip, Minister Farrakhan visited the home of Nigeria's military ruler, Sani Abacha, to console the General on the death of is son, Ibrahim. Farrakhan and his delegation later returned to Nigeria for a six-day, state sponsored tour of the country.

Supporting a Military Dictator Farrakhan reportedly expressed support for Abacha's leadership, undermining the efforts of many black community leaders who have harshly criticized the military junta. In March 1995, a group of prominent African-Americans condemned Nigeria's military dictatorship and launched a campaign to restore democracy to the nation. TransAfrica, a Washington-based lobbying organization, charged that as "an absolute military dictatorship," the Nigerian regime had violated human rights and had banned all political activity in the country. Randall Robinson, executive director of TransAfrica, announced that his group "would oppose the Nigerian government with as much tenacity as we opposed the [former white] South African government."

While Abacha has promised to return Nigeria to democratic rule over a three-year period, the U.S. and other Western countries have pressured him to implement such plans more quickly. Speaking to journalists in Lagos, Nigeria, Farrakhan reportedly defended Abacha's timetable, and chastised the West for exerting pressure on the military leader. His statements sparked bitter criticism from pro-democracy activists in Nigeria, who accused him of being an agent of the military junta, and urged him to "ponder whether his famous march ... would have been possible if Americans were to be laboring under the yoke of military dictatorship."

Condoning Suppression of Dissent Farrakhan also decried Western countries for criticizing Abacha's recent execution of Nigerian writer and environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, who was condemned by a military tribunal for demanding a greater share of oil revenues for his people, the Ogoni tribe. Addressing Nigeria's critics, Farrakhan said, "You hanged one man. So what? Ask them, too, `How many did you hang?"'

Not surprisingly, TransAfrica's Robinson was upset with Farrakhan's overtures to the Nigerian government. "I am extremely disappointed with the statements made on this trip," he told The New York Times. "His statements ... appear to make Minister Farrakhan an apologist for an authoritarian, corrupt and repressive regime."

LIBYA

Supporting Qaddafi On January 23, Farrakhan arrived in Tripoli, Libya, where he met with Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi. Farrakhan has traveled to Tripoli for other meetings with the strongman, including one in 1986 that offered training seminars on weapons and explosives. In 1985, Qaddafi extended the Nation of Islam a $5 million interest-free loan to launch a line of household and beauty products. Later that year, the Libyan leader spoke by satellite to NOI's Saviour's Day Convention in Chicago, and told Farrakhan supporters that he was prepared to provide weapons to a black army in the U.S. to destroy "white America." In October 1995, Qaddafi called Farrakhan with congratulations on the success of the Million Man March. Asserting his support of black equality, Qaddafi assured the NOI leader that "we will unite our capabilities and efforts to achieve this."

In their most recent talks together, Qaddafi appears to have made good on his promise. According to reports from Libya's news agency, JANA, Farrakhan and Qaddafi agreed to work together to mobilize "oppressed blacks, Arabs, Muslims and Red Indians" in the United States to influence the outcome of the 1996 elections and the shaping of U.S. foreign-policy. Until now, Qaddafi said, "our confrontation with America was like a fight against a fortress from outside." He added that his pact with Farrakhan provides him with "a breach to enter into this fortress and confront it." Qaddafi also reportedly agreed to bankroll a $1 billion Muslim lobby in America to help bring these plans to fruition. Following their talks, Minister Farrakhan announced he was "happy with the results of this meeting."

The U.S. Government Reacts Responding to his visit in Libya, the U.S. State Department stated it was surprised that Farrakhan had not brought up the issue of Libya's involvement in the 1988 bombing of a Pan Am jetliner. "I just think as a citizen that when prominent Americans talk to Muammar Qaddafi, who is a criminal, they ought to talk about Pan Am," a Department spokesman said.

In addition, the U.S. Department of Justice sent a letter to the Nation of Islam leader advising him that the Foreign Agent Registration Act requires all citizens working on behalf of a foreign entity to influence U.S. policy to formally register with the Department as foreign agents.

In a letter to Attorney General Janet Reno, Congressman Peter King (R-NY) called for a Federal investigation of Qaddafi's $1 billion pledge. Calling Farrakhan's talks with Qaddafi "an act of high treachery," King also urged the House International Relations Subcommittee on International Operations to hold hearings on Farrakhan's trip.

GAMBIA

An account of Farrakhan's trip published in the Nation of Islam's The Final Call claims that the NOI Minister enjoys a significant following in the Western African nation of Gambia. The paper reported that on January 25, hundreds of Gambians met Farrakhan and his delegation at the airport with cries of "Long live Brother Farrakhan!"

The country's leader, Chairman Yahya J. J. Jammeh, reportedly told the NOI delegation that when he was a student in the 1970s and 1980s, tapes of Farrakhan were illegal and listened to only secretly, but today are extremely popular. The Final Call also boasted that "Most Gambians were nursed on tapes of the Minister Farrakhan" and that the country is "proving to be a model for the successful impact of the teachings of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad."

SOUTH AFRICA

Farrakhan arrived in South Africa on Saturday, January 27, for a four-day visit that included a meeting with President Nelson Mandela on January 28. Farrakhan was invited to South Africa and hosted there by the radical, all-black, Pan-Africanist Congress.

The meeting was covered widely in the South African media, reflecting the outrage of many whites that their president would meet with Farrakhan. Press accounts of the visit referred to the vicious anti-white statements of NOI spokesman Khalid Abdul Muhammad in December 1993 at New Jersey's Kean College, when he said (among other hateful remarks) that all white South Africans should be killed. And they expressed concern that Farrakhan would inflame the tenuous new racial relations in the country by making the same sort of remarks.

The South African Jewish Community Protests South Africa's Jewish community vehemently protested the meeting, outraged that their country's leader, who has become an icon of racial tolerance and co-existence, would confer legitimacy on a prominent racial separatist and anti-Semite. A delegate from the South African Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD) met with government officials prior to the visit to discuss the implications of the meeting and to try to dissuade Mandela from holding the meeting. The group expressed concern that Farrakhan would use the meeting to boost his quest for legitimacy in the United States without having to retract any of his past rhetoric.

"This is not only a Jewish matter but also an issue of racism as Farrakhan has attacked homosexuals, whites, Catholics and women aside from Jews," the SAJBD said in a statement after the meeting.

And a spokesman for the South African Union of Jewish Students said, "It is indeed a travesty that a leader who seeks to sow discord amongst various groupings and whose agenda is obviously contrary to the spirit of the new South Africa and its Constitution is welcomed by President Mandela, himself a symbol of the new dispensation."

Meeting With Mandela The two men met for about 30 minutes at Mandela's suburban Johannesburg home, discussing racism, religious tolerance, and the rights of women, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Mandela told reporters afterward, "I've met with many people whose views I don't agree with. I have met apartheid leaders and those from white extremist organizations."

Farrakhan said he agreed with Mandela's opposition to racism, saying it had "poisoned the bloodstream of all religions and ideologies."

The NOI leader did indeed try to use the meeting to confer legitimacy upon himself, as reflected in the coverage by the organization's newspaper, The Final Call. An article in the Feb. 14 issue equated Mandela and Farrakhan as two freedom fighters for the same cause, neglecting to mention that Mandela stated after the meeting that he does not agree with Farrakhan's views, or that Mandela has preached peace and tolerance while Farrakhan and his followers promote racial exclusion and bigotry.

"The two men momentarily gazed into each other's eyes, perhaps reflecting on the pains and sacrifices, the controversies and troubles each has witnessed in their quests to liberate the suffering Black masses in their particular countries," the article stated.

While all mainstream press accounts that quoted Mandela after the meeting cited the president's opposition to Farrakhan's views, The Final Call reported that Mandela made the following statement:

"And there was no issue that arose on which there was disagreement. He has explained his position. His views are identical with the principles that I put forward."

Inflammatory Rhetoric Some of the fears of the country's white population were realized in later remarks Farrakhan made, which were not nearly as conciliatory as those statements uttered in the presence of Mandela. Right after this harmonious meeting, Farrakhan held a news conference at his hotel where he condemned South Africa's whites. He said the country's white population has made strides to overcome the legacy of apartheid, "but they need to make a public acknowledgment of the wrongs they have committed."

Farrakhan said he is not a racist: "For a black man to become a racist, he must first have power," he said. He also said NOI is committed to the equality of women.

And that same day, Farrakhan stated his oft-repeated call for land to be set aside in Africa for American blacks. "We have asked that territory be set aside in Africa because we did not leave voluntarily. We have a right to Africa. This is our mother land. You have a vast land here that is not used. Over a million blacks are in prison right now, with no future. We are saying give them to us to teach them, reform them, and let them work off their time."

On Wednesday, January 31, in a lecture at Vista University in the black township of Mamelodi near Pretoria, Farrakhan once again uttered his theory of racial supremacy by telling students that blacks were the first people on earth. "Light skin is weak, dark skin is strong. You can get recessive from dominant, but not dominant from recessive. That tells us that white people were not the first on earth," he said.

The New York Times reported that while in South Africa, Farrakhan and his 30-person entourage rode around in white stretch limousines with gold detailing, an unusually ostentatious display for that country.

SUDAN

Defending a Terrorist Regime On February 8, during a five-hour visit to Khartoum, the Sudan, Farrakhan met with Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir and Hassan al-Turabi, leader of Sudan's ruling party. He told them, according to the government-owned news service Al-Hadith, that Muslims in America stand behind Sudanese Muslims, whom "the Western enemy wants to eliminate," and assured them that "More than 40 million American Muslims stand with Sudan against the unjust plots that it is subjected to." Minister Farrakhan also said that the "Western campaign" against the Sudan would ultimately fail.

Under Turabi's influence, the Sudan has become a launch pad for Islamic extremist terrorism. Funded by Iran, the Sudan has provided safe haven for accused terrorists, training at camps staffed by Iranian Red Guard Corps instructors, while waging a bloody civil war against Christians and animists in the country's south. According to a story in The Economist, the fundamentalist regime has a "ubiquitous secret police, no free press and no independent judiciary ... . A Truth Authentication Department helps keep watch on any challenge to political, social or religious orthodoxy." In addition, reports conducted for the United Nations, the State Department, and private human rights organizations have asserted that Muslims from Sudan's northern region regions regularly enslave Sudanese blacks; some women and children have been sold in slave markets for as little as $15.

Ignoring Slavery Following Farrakhan's visit to the Sudan, Chicago Tribune columnist Clarence Page criticized the NOI leader for his flirtation with the country's leaders and noted that Farrakhan has ignored reports of black enslavement. "Farrakhan typically turns a blind eye to reports of slavery in Africa, even when they're thrust in his face. Sudan's president rebuffs the charges and the Nation of Islam helps." Though Farrakhan has been silent on the issue, his International Minister, Abdul Akbar Muhammad, has defended Sudan's leaders, and has characterized reports of slavery as components of a "Jewish conspiracy" to divide the Muslim world.

IRAN

Farrakhan arrived in Iran on Saturday, February 10, to celebrate the 17th anniversary of the country's Islamic revolution. Sharing a podium with President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani at a large rally in Tehran the next day, Farrakhan reportedly stated, "If America wants the world to be democratic, Iran has had 17 elections" since religious leaders overthrew the Shah in 1979 and brought the late Ayatollah Khomeini to power. "This is a theocracy, but it is also a democracy."

Farrakhan was also reported to have maintained that "Iran is now in the vanguard of an Islamic revolution that is sweeping the earth." An Iranian newspaper quoted him as saying, "You can quote me: God will destroy America by the hands of Muslims. ... God will not give Japan or Europe the honor of bringing down the United States; this is an honor God will bestow upon Muslims."

In the same vein, Iran's official Islamic Republic News Agency reported that at a February 13 seminar before theologians, in the holy city of Qum, Farrakhan stated that the United States "as the only superpower, is on the decline and Islam will attract more adherents as the supreme and inspiring power. We live in the center of corruption and struggle in the heart of the Great Satan. Thus we need your spiritual aid." The phrase "Great Satan" was used by the Ayatollah Khomeini to describe the United States.

The same day, Farrakhan spoke before the Iranian parliament, promising to unite American Muslims against Washington's policies toward Iran. In comments carried by state-run Tehran television, Farrakhan reportedly stated that "we shall utilize American Muslim unity as a lever of pressure against the United States' arrogant policies." He asserted that Iran's "Islamic revolution is a perfect example of a government based on the Koran."

Also on February 13, Farrakhan predicted that his preachings might lead to imprisonment, perhaps alongside Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman, the Egyptian cleric convicted in January of conspiring to bomb New York City landmarks.

"Maybe there's a cell next to Abdel-Rahman for me, and maybe he and I will be together reading the Koran and encouraging each other," Farrakhan said in a Tehran radio interview. "America feels that a person like that ... who is listened to and loved, as Imam Abdel-Rahman was, needs to be confined" when he preaches "the message of true Islam, which inspires the militants among us as Muslims," Farrakhan said. "So that leads me to myself. When you see in America nearly two million black people answer a call by Louis Farrakhan," referring to his Million Man March, "I'm in deep trouble inside America."

The following day, the U.S. State Department described Farrakhan's trip to Iran and, a few weeks earlier, to Libya, as "shameful" and "cavorting with dictators." A spokesman said of the Iran visit: "It's extraordinary that ... [he] went to Tehran to stand with people who support international terrorism all over the world, including terrorist acts against American military personnel and American civilians."

During the course of his stay in Iran, according to the Associated Press, Farrakhan met with President Rafsanjani, Parliament Speaker Ali Akbar Nateq-Nouri, and Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velyati.

IRAQ

Farrakhan proceeded to Iraq from Iran, meeting with Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein on February 15. At a news conference following the meeting, Farrakhan stated (referring to United Nations' sanctions imposed following the 1991 Gulf War), "We visited the children's hospital ... and I must say if I were made of stone, seeing what I saw today would bring tears from my eyes. Sanctions is a crime against humanity." He added: "Visiting the hospital that we visited today would be, or could be, compared to visiting one of the (Nazi) death camps."

CONCLUSION

On February 22, Louis Farrakhan's 23-nation "friendship tour" drew to a close in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where he called for the Muslims of the world to unite and form a "superpower." "Those who fear Islam fear that Islam is going to replace the Western hegemony in the world, and they are right," he said.

Farrakhan appeared to shrug off the angry responses of U.S. officials to his meetings with militant dictators, saying jokingly that he would love to take his Africa Middle East tour all over again, "if American officials allow me." But it is hard to see the humor in all of this. In the space of 27 days, Louis Farrakhan, who was recently saluted by eminent civil rights and political figures at the Million Man March, publicly embraced half a dozen of the world's most treacherous leaders, turning a blind eye to the blood on their hands. He heaped praise on the tyrannical regimes of Iran, Iraq and the Sudan, while denouncing the United States government.

While he was able to moderate his message significantly in the months before the Million Man March, it seems that it was only a matter of time before Farrakhan's extremist core came rushing to the fore. His inflammatory statements and his meetings with some of America's greatest enemies cannot be casually dismissed. They display a callous disregard for human rights, and an incomprehensible complacency toward terrorism and violence.

Midway through Farrakhan's trip, an article in The Final Call insisted that their leader's mission abroad was to "lift the boot of oppression from the backs of the oppressed." But his inflammatory, self-serving behavior along the tour makes this claim hard to swallow. And, though a great many of the black Americans who attended the Million Man March in October said they do not support the Nation of Islam or its teachings, Minister Farrakhan chose to ignore this as he made his way through Africa and the Middle East. He depicted himself as the representative of the "million" marchers, exploiting their goodwill for his own purposes.

It has been widely noted that most march attendees were simply demonstrating their eagerness to revitalize the black community, not anointing Farrakhan as their spokesperson. As black columnist Carl Rowan commented:

A lot of us black Americans are worried and angry about the widening racial divide in America, especially the upsurge of white politicians trying to wipe out almost every gain made by minorities dur ing the last 35 years. But we have not designated Farrakhan to articulate our concerns in words that sound treasonous or approving of all the murderous dictators and scoundrels of Africa and the Middle East.

If Farrakhan's itinerary had included only one controversial locale, or one meeting with an unsavory dictator, perhaps those who have been welcoming Farrakhan into the mainstream could feel comfortable ignoring his trip. Some have made it clear that they are willing to overlook his record of bigotry. But the NO1 leader's recent performance is not an aberration. The Nation of Islam is an extremist organization with a racist ideology and an apocalyptic vision of America's future. Farrakhan's promise that "God will destroy America by the hands of the Muslims," in keeping with NOI teachings, should drive this point home.

Better "character assassination" than the forms of assassination Arafart specialized in.

If Arafart had not been such a murdering, terrorist b*stard, the author may have a point.
