For the Record, by Arlen Specter: "I never 'warned' the president about anything."
Wall Street Journal ^ | November 10, 2004 | ARLEN SPECTER

Posted on 11/10/2004 6:18:58 AM PST by OESY

To resolve any concern that I would block pro-life judicial nominees, take a look at my record. I have consistently opposed any litmus test. I have backed that up by voting to confirm pro-life nominees including Chief Justice William Rehnquist, Justice Antonin Scalia, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and Justice Anthony Kennedy. I led the fight to confirm Justice Clarence Thomas, which almost cost me my Senate seat in 1992.

I have voted for all of President Bush's judicial nominees in committee and on the floor.

The current controversy was artificially created by incorrect reporting. I never "warned" the president on anything -- and especially not that I'd block pro-life nominees....

I merely noted the political facts of life. Pro-life nominees might be filibustered by the Democrats. The Democrats had done so repeatedly in the last Congress.

As the only pro-choice Republican on the Judiciary Committee, I come from a different philosophical position on the political spectrum and can be helpful in dealing with the Democrats to get the president's nominees confirmed. I proved that in shepherding through confirmations on two controversial conservative nominees for the Third U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, D. Brooks Smith and Michael Fisher....

I am committed, in word and deed, to prompt action by the Judiciary Committee. Last April, I introduced Senate Resolution 327, a protocol to establish prompt action on all judicial nominees. Specifically, my protocol provides that all nominees will have a Judiciary Committee hearing within 30 days of nomination, a Judiciary Committee vote within 30 days of the hearing, and a floor vote 30 days later.

...I made 17 floor statements to protest Democratic filibusters on nominees including Miguel Estrada and Charles Pickering.

When Karl Rove....

I hope that this review of my record clarifies the misperceptions.

Thank you for your service, and your statement. Loyalty and judicial temperment "not proved." Actions have consequences.

Bork him.

Leave the party, Arlen, if you were ever truly in it. We got rid of Daschle, more obstructionism we don't need.

Wow, Specter must really be on life support going to WSJ. He has done the damage and this is too important of an issue to roll the dice.

Specter needs to go and he has no one to blame but himself.

I don't trust this sneaky liberal Republican from PA?

Maybe President Bush supported the wrong candidate in PA and lost the state because of it?

Pro-life nominees might be filibustered by the Democrats.

Yes, they might. Why do you think it's YOUR job to "note" that for the President, Mr. Spectacle?

A leader leads. He does what he does because it's right. What the enemy might do is not germane to what the right course is.

The guy is a weasel and cannot be counted on. He should pay for his arrogant attitude over the years and his attempts to hurt the republican party.

His actions speak louder than his words. Bork him!

REF: http://www.aclj.org/trialnotebook/read.aspx?id=39

"Either Senator Specter got the message that he should not be tinkering with the President's judicial nominees, or another senator will have to serve as chairman of this important committee. Advice and consent does not allow for obstruction. It simply allows for an up-or-down vote. All senators, including Senator Specter, need to realize that the Constitution rests the authority to nominate and appoint judges with the President, and the Senate's role of advice and consent should mandate an up-or-down vote on each of these nominees."

Proper emphasis in bold, added.

Specter 1995-

Asking pro-abortion Republicans to "stand up to the far-right fringe that demands that legal abortion be banned," Specter said support for his candidacy would "help move the Party towards tolerance and inclusion."

Seems like the voice of the People has been heard loud and clear in the Senate! If Specter has been compelled to make a statement, we have surely "made a statement!"

Actions have consequences and Specter has a record as a turncoat on almost all important issues.

Bork was really "borked" by Specter.

Yeah, just like liar Specter told Bork he was supporting him, then knifed him in the back in the voting.

Specter is a RINO who behaves like a viper. Nobody should trust this loser. He should have been flushed down the drain of history when Toomey ran against him.
