Olive oil is one of those "almost perfect" foods. If you can handle the fat, it's got a ton of great health benefits. Kind of like eggs. They're great for you if you're not predisposed to high cholestorol.

This is the first study that shows fruits and vegetables actually reversing dysfunctions in behavior and in nerve cells.

I love blueberries, I also love tomatoes, spinach, asparagus, onions, cheese, olives,(Spanish and black), celery, carrots, pepper, salt, water, beer, oranges, apples, pomegranates, and most of these as ingredients on my pizza!

I hope that my previous endeavors in picking "blueberries" isn't overwhelmed by my other tastes in food.

I need to go to bed however for my nervous twitch is getting the best of me, and I am concerned that I may "kick" the dog in frustration. LoL's!

Perhaps because of my lack of dietary input I should be placed on an antidepressant?

I hope you take appreciation in my replies my friend, for the sarcasm is flowing.

"I am sure some nutritional supplement places will extract the active ingredient and will start selling it as a supplement shortly."

Are you kidding?

LOL

Is beer a vegetable? Or did you just throw that in to see if anyone will actually read your list?

Thanks!

A friend mentioned Swanson's Vitamins, but I forgot the name, but now that I see it again, it reminded me, I think this was it.

This is supposed to be a very inexpensive vitamin and nutritional supplement place, right?

I am acquainted with vitaminshoppe.com, which I thought was pretty good, but I think I heard ( although I hadn't done the comparison myself yet), that Swanson's is cheaper.

Actually, what they have is blueberry leaf extract, not extract of the blueberry fruit. I am sure the leaf is good for some things as well.

Researchers have found a compound in the blueberry that lowers cholesterol just as effectively as commercial drugs..

The headline is misleading. "A compound in" may require several pounds of blueberries per day as opposed to what's now used. (But it's possible that the compoound or a modification could be useful.)

They have a good publication, but their supplements are expensive...

Diet, not drugs, is the best course.

Actually it is diet and exercise that are essential to health. I still have not found a more definitive all-around approach than a practicing physician who also hosts his own radio show, Dr. Gabe Mirkin. He [and oddly enough G. Gordon Liddy] have repeatedly alluded to the fact that our bodies have not changed much since we were running around in skins. Thus, our dietary and physical activity needs are still essentially the same.

The closer we can come to eating what our ancestors ate [a wide variety of foods that have not had the fiber and phytochemicals boiled/processed out of them] the better our diet. The closer we can simulate the cardio training that our rough-living forebears had to perform for survival [w/o the danger of course], the better our fitness. Now we have machines that can make that much easier so we don't have to do the equivalent of a decathelon every day [nor risk injury].

I came of age when Arnold's "Pumping Iron" came out. It seemed at the time that we were just going to become more and more fit as an exercise craze began to blossom and everyone was going to the gym. It is still shocking to be on a college campus and be in better shape than many who are half my age. We should know better. There is absolutely no excuse for us to be so sedentary and eating such junk. I can hardly stand to go out in public anymore and see so many people lacking a neck or waist.

Blueberries can be grown down here in Texas, and by picking the right varieties you can have them over 3 or more months. They are not solely a northern fruit. I believe South America (Chile) grows and exports them into the U.S.

The soil must be well drained and acidic. There are varieties for nearly all U.S. climates.

I just picked some just over a month ago here in Texas. Hmm Good. Lots of fun for kids to pick as there's fruit within their picking range.

Just freeze a bunch for later in the season, then buy South American during the off season.

I've never tried it but maybe you could make a blueberry wine for off-season consumption? That would sure beat blueberry capsules.

Hoppy

Researchers have found a compound in the blueberry that lowers cholesterol just as effectively as commercial drugs ...

Spodefly Pharmaceuticals, a division of Spodefly Industries, is currently undergoing initial trials on the manufacture of an improved medication for the treatment of cholesterol.

In fact, it is growing in my backyard now.

Not only have they increased in price, but they haven't been looking too good the past year or two. Even out here in the Pacific NW, they've been pretty bad and the frozen ones are worse.

I know blueberries are supposed to be good for a lot of things, but it's nice, if they're going to cost an arm and a leg, that they don't rot between the store and your kitchen.

University of Hawaii study showed long term consumption of tofu actually caused some brain damage.

My daughter is doing a college paper on some other undesirable side affects of soy consumption.

It's all poison depending on the dose I guess.

when learning that it takes around seven years for a blueberry tree/bush to begin to bear fruit

Three to four years is more like it. If one obtains container grown stock from a good nursery they can have a small initial crop within one year.

Check out some nurseries to see if they have any blueberry plants left available. They may even be discounted this time of year. Some of the smaller nurseries have plants that have been there a couple of years. I planted some that produced in two years from planting. Full production takes longer. Just get em planted.

Smaller berries have more of the good nutrients per weight of berries. The nutrients concentrate in the skins, so don't peel them before eating.
