WASHINGTON - In news releases and postings on John Kerry's campaign Web site as recently as last Friday, the Democratic presidential candidate is touted as the former vice chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.
Kerry was not vice chairman and the claim has now been removed from Kerry's Web site.
According to the Senate Historical Office, Kerry never had the seniority to hold a leadership position on the committee -- though he was a member from 1993 until 2001.
The Kerry campaign says the claim was an error, but did not explain who made the error or how it went undetected. Bob Kerrey -- a former Democratic senator from Nebraska -- did serve as the Senate Intelligence Committee's vice chairman.
"John Kerry, Bob Kerrey -- similar names," said Kerry campaign spokesman Michael Meehan.
Republicans were less willing to see the misstatement as an innocent mistake.
"It's difficult to take John Kerry's claims about his intelligence experience seriously when one of his credentials is completely made up," said Republican National Committee spokeswoman Christine Iverson. "If he had shown up for Intelligence Committee hearings he would notice he wasn't vice chairman."

"If he had shown up for Intelligence Committee hearings he would notice he wasn't vice chairman."
Kerry's lies are so blatant that I'm starting to doubt his mental stability.
And if, for some reason, he did not review his web site and press releases for content, then he does not have the management skills necessary to handle the presidency.
I question the timing of this.
Gee, even his own campaign staffers don't know who he is.
Maybe it was Bob Kerry that spent Christmas in Cambodia?
No, No, no... say it like this:
It was seared - seared - into his memory that one Christmas he was the vice chairman.
I guess it is safe to say that he was vice chairman before he wasn't vice chairman.
You just cannot make this stuff up.
You know, I would almost think that Kerry's camp is playing a complicated double game here.
On the one hand, they have to maintain credibility on intelligence and national security matters, so the Senator makes all sorts of very public statements about supporting the CIA and salutes on TV and touts his Vietnam credentials (Did you know he served in Vietnam...?). This is designed to influence the moderate voter who really is not playing close attention, to give the impression that Kerry is not a security zero in an age of terrorism.
On the other hand, if Kerry really is strong on intelligence and national security issues, he risks alienating his Democrat base, which is strongly against the CIA, the Patriot Act, war in general and the War on Terror in particular. If they see Kerry as a legitimate pro-CIA, pro-war candidate, they will either stay home, or vote for Nader. So Kerry's positions are carefully modulated, nuanced even, to be ridiculous to anybody paying close attention. The fact that he is obviously lying over Cambodia and has voted against our intelligence agencies at every turn actually helps him with his base.
So by posturing in public and being revealed as a fraud on background actually lets John F'n Kerry have his cake and eat it too. It is up to the 'Pubbies to make sure he does not get away with it, to make sure that he is branded as dishonest and wanting to have it both ways on everything.
But there are smart people in the Bush 2004 campaign who are waaaay ahead of me on that score...
Kerry was the "secret" vice chairman
Is that anything that still shows up on Google cache? Or did it quickly go the way of his Sandy Burger-inspired (seemingly) statement on terrorism?
Wait until they find out who he REALLY is...
That sleaze, Meehan, should have been asked to expound on that little gem of wisdom.
And in a hidden compartment of his shoe, he has a tie given to him by Valerie Plame.
Then, please point them out. I've yet to see any.
All I see is Karl Rove's condescending attitude: "Of COURSE they'll vote Republican - where ELSE are they gonna go?"
The volume has been turned up on the mind control of The Sheep, and that's where the Left has us on the ropes. The Sheep, and their votes, are theirs.
Now, THAT'S gonna leave a mark - THWAP!!!
Hell, this guy makes George McGovern and Al Gore look like real people.
That's a good point. I'll never forget Madeline Notbright and Clinton talking about "when we aren't a super power anymore". It's almost as though they are doing everything they can to make sure that day happens and soon.
The unravelling is beginning. The Bush-hating party thought they could nominate anybody and get away with it. They were wrong. They've got a far left loser at the top of their ticket and the whole country is watching.
It might not be a landslide, but I think it's going to be a safe 52-48 Bush win.
I dont know if Google still has it cached but there were threads here on FR that had screenshots captured.
Thje error is easy enough to explain - but this is the kind of bind you get into when you are doing "resume enhancement". Kerrey was with the Navy in Viet Nam, Kerry was with the Navy in Viet Nam, "John" and "Bob" are fairly common first names. (Wasn't there a "John" and "Bobby" Kennedy a few years back?)
"If he had shown up for Intelligence Committee hearings he would notice he wasn't vice chairman."
That is laughing out loud funny!!!! Kerry is a laughing stock!
If he does not even have a clear grasp on his own work history, how can anyone expect him to "run" the Executive Branch of the US Government.
"That's a good point. I'll never forget Madeline Notbright and Clinton talking about "when we aren't a super power anymore". It's almost as though they are doing everything they can to make sure that day happens and soon."
France, Germany, Russia, China, and the Middle East seemed to have been banking on it as well. Gives a big clue as to what path the algore administration would be on, had they stolen the election of 2000.
Seems awfully cloudy from where you are. The Rove cloud of darkness may surprise you in a few weeks.
Perhaps you will tune in to the debates and the storm will pass.
I know, I know ... I'm an optimist. ;)
Slap self on forehead w/loud smack!
You can not make this stuff up!
The list of truths told by Kerry would take up much less space. I'll list them below.
Senate Intelligence Committee: John Kerry Knew There Was 9/11 Danger and Did NOTHING!
From the John Kerry for President site we learn this: (John Kerry's Time on the Senate Intelligence Committee
Kerry is an Experienced Leader in the Intelligence Field John Kerry served on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence is the former Vice Chairman of the Committee. Kerry joined the Committee in early 1995 and served until early 2001. Among the areas closely investigated by John Kerry and the Intelligence Committee include global terrorism, world wide threats to U.S. national security, international espionage, weapons of mass destruction, drug trafficking, arms trafficking and nuclear security. John Kerry is also the former Chairman of the Subcommittee on Terrorism, Narcotics and International Operations and conducted several high profile Intelligence and International Security investigations. Additionally, Kerry is the author of the 1997 book The New War which addressed the challenges of global terrorism and has served on the Foreign Relations Committee for more than eighteen years. ......... As chairman and then ranking Democrat on the Senate subcommittee on terrorism, narcotics, and international operations, John Kerry has been out front in pushing three presidential administrations to take seriously what is going on in the international underworld. I can't even stop laughing long enough to pick out my favorite line in this........what a joke kerry is.
Kerry's website would make The Great Houdini jealous.
It gives a whole new meaning to "Now you see it - Now you don't". With a wave of his wand - he makes people'places and things disappear.
I wish Meehan WOULD explain that statement. What, he doesn't actually know Lyin' John and can't ask him directly about his record? Perhaps Lyin' John is the one who was confused about the committee in the first place...
Gotta love the AP. They're very good at not asking questions they don't want answers to.
I suppose it was just another case of mistaken "similar names" yesterday when 3 (those were only the ones I heard so could have been more), THREE, different people on FNC called him John KENNEDY?!?
I thought I was the optimist around here 8-)
I hadn't heard that one. The man and/or his RAT staff can't go one day without lying. Heaven help us if he does become POTUS.
Searing learned at the CIA (Culinary Institute of America)
On Wednesday, Rush Limbaugh had the Google cache on his web site. I would assume that was not simply a link. I haven't yet done so, but someone who subscribes to Rush 24/7 could go over there and see if he still has the unedited Kerry page with the "vice chairman" sentence in it. I saved a copy myself, but don't really have the facility to post it yet.
Goodness gracious people. Give the F'inn campaign a break. Can't everyone see the last names are the same? I mean, Kerry and Kerry are spelled the same. He WAS in Vietnam you know, and spent Christmas in Cambodia. He did get three purple hearts.
He was for ______________, before he was against ____________.
< /SUPER HEAVY SARCASM PING>
You are ... you are.
I said an optimist. Not the optimist.
I will be more careful in the future! ;)
Well, yeah, the names are quite similar, and it would be reasonable to expect to see some young Associated Press reporter confusing the two. But it is ridiculous to have the mistake on Kerry's own website. It is the equivalent of putting someone else's accomplishments on your own resume.
I have a Jewish friend named Mickey Mandell. His resume includes graduating from Brooklyn College with a degree in accounting and passing the C.P.A. exam. I suppose if it said that he hit over 500 home runs in his career and won the American League Triple Crown in 1956, he could explain the mistake by noting how similar his name is to the late Yankee centerfielder.
Yeah, well, you know those rascally Republicans--unrealistically demanding that a candidate and his staff know his own damned name!
Post of the week!
Any report by the major media on this gaffe
The question becomes......just what was he doing when he should have been in meetings.
Something Teeraaayyyzzaa might want to know.
That was Rove's, too? The "boy wonder"?
I wonder about this boy...
