Rate in Indiana is the second-highest in the nation.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Nearly one in 15 Indiana adults have gun permits, second only to New York in the number per 1,000 residents, a survey by The Indianapolis Star showed.
About 300,000 Hoosiers have the permits, which are available to people over the age of 18.
The Indiana State Police -- and sometimes local departments -- check the backgrounds of applicants for criminal convictions that would disqualify them.
Last year, about 76,000 permits were issued, and 2,360 were denied. So far this year, about 35,000 have been handed out, and 2,126 have been denied. Permits are good for four years.
Unlike some states, Indiana does not make permit applicants take any training.
However, applicants do have to say why they want a permit. Most claim personal protection, though most will never actually fire their weapon in self-defense.
Daniel L. Floyd of Johnson County is one gun owner who did.
In March, a neighbor came after him with an ax handle. Floyd fired his 9 mm handgun, sending one bullet into the neighbor's neck and two into his torso. The man died.
"He came out swinging," Floyd said of his deadly encounter with Bruce D. Mills. "I asked him a dozen times to stop."
Mills was breaking windows in a vacant mobile home next door. Floyd and his fiancée heard the noise and went outside to investigate. He said Mills suddenly came after him.
"He could have beaten me to death," Floyd said. "Thousands and thousands of people in the state have firearms and never have to use them. And to be honest, I wish I were one of them."
Many permit holders list addresses with Central Indiana ZIP codes. Six of the 10 ZIP-code areas with the most permit-holders are in Marion County and adjacent counties.
The process in some larger U.S. cities is much more restrictive. In California, for instance, sheriffs have more of a say over whether to grant permits in their counties.

I think this guy is getting his concealed weapons permits mixed up with his gun owner's permits (which exist in New York and a few other places, but not in most of the country.) Every deer hunter and trap shooter in New York has to have a license, but these are emphatically NOT carry permits. Try carrying a revolver in New York City with your regular gun owner's license, and see how long it takes to get thrown in the slammer.

Great logic. I've been paying for car insurance for 25 years and have never had to use it. I think I'll get rid of it. Same goes for the fire alarms and extinguishers in my house--what a colossal waste of money. Seat belts? Cut 'em out of my truck.
The writer may well be confused about whether the permits are for carrying concealed weapons (which they are), or hunting licenses (which they are not).
Regarding New York being #1, that's not hard to believe since NY has 6 times the population of Indiana.
Given the widespread popularity of hunting in Indiana, it's probable that we are talking about a million or more hunting licenses. The article at http://www.hoosiergazette.com/Sports/sports006.htm is quite interesting in that over 400,000 licenses were sold last year for combined mountain lion and bear hunting even though neither species exists in the state. You can just imagine how many licenses were sold for bagging bunny rabits, cute little squirrels, and Bambi's mother!
Truer words were never spoken. Killing another human being is not something any sane person would want to do.
However, sometimes, it's the only option.
For a second there I thought the headline was "300,000 hookers have gun permits".
"Some states have a "concealed carry" permit, requiring you to keep the gun under wraps.
Indiana sets no such limits. You don't have to hide your weapon.
You can't, however, carry it just anywhere. Private businesses have the right to keep them out, and you don't want to try to bring one on an airplane. Still, you can carry it many places -- even places a lot of people wish you wouldn't."
I don't know if this answers what you said. I gather the law is different in Indiana than in most states, so it isn't apples and oranges, but people do carry their guns with them.
The last post is a quote from down in the body of the article. From the Indy star. Do any legal experts around here understand what it is saying?
Good article, and I'm proud to be one of the 300,000. One of the reasons I love Indiana is the relative ease with which one can get a concealed carry permit.
I've seen guards for dopedealers actually conceal a full shotgun under their leather trenchcoats.
This occurred in in hot summer weather. Apparantly they stuff the barrel down one of their pants legs ~ you can tell by the way they walk. If the guard is not too tall he has to raise his shoulder. This gives him a "Chester" appearance.
Still, that's an amazing number of permits for a state with that population. My children have always been impressed when we visit relatives back home and they get to see the shotguns, rifles, RPGs, etc. on display in the gun cabinets in the living room. An Arab buddy of mine says its the same with his family when he visits Senna (in Yemen). In fact, there, when they take the requisite family photos, the cousins all carry their weapons. I don't recall our having done that in the last 25 or 30 years, but then again Hoosiers are not Arabs!
I noticed that the article pointed out that the majority of permit holders are in the Indianapolis metro area. When you see how the area was flooded with illegals by Clinton and Company, you see why we pack heat.
Geez, thanks.
I just had to go change my shorts and steam clean the old chair cushion...
The mental image of all those armed hookers was more than I could handle.
