Furore over rocker's 'Bush slur'
June 10 2004 at 04:30PM
London - Morrissey, the outspoken lead singer of 1980s rockers The Smiths, has sparked an Internet storm with reported comments about United States President George Bush.
The Manchester Evening News said on Thursday that it had received a record number of hits after reporting on its website that Morrissey had interrupted a Dublin concert on Saturday with news of Ronald Reagan's death, adding that he wished Bush had died instead.
Morrissey's record company, Sanctuary Records, could not confirm the remarks.
"We do not have a recording of the gig, but as far as we can tell, Morrissey was just alerting the audience to the fact that Ronald Reagan had died," the newspaper quoted the company as saying. "He then simply followed that up with his comment about George Bush, which was his own opinion. He is no stranger to controversy."
'He is no stranger to controversy' A newspaper spokesperson said thousands of people, 90 percent from the United States, had contacted the site to complain. A few expressed support for the remarks.
Formed in Manchester in the early 1980s, The Smiths had a series of British hits, and a large cult following around the world, with songs including Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now and Shoplifters Of The World Unite.
A longtime proponent of celibacy and vegetarianism who once penned a song entitled Bigmouth Strikes Again, Morrissey drew criticism in the early 1990s when he appeared to flirt with right-wing British nationalism.
He now lives in Los Angeles and is touring Europe for the first time in a decade to promote his latest solo album, You Are The Quarry. - Sapa-AP
For similar, great guitar work check out Vini Reilly/Durutti Column.
Exactly. Who the heck is Morrisey? Wasn't he half of Captain and Tenille?
" For similar, great guitar work check out Vini Reilly/Durutti Column. "
YASS !!!! I am a HUGE Durutti Column fan ( still recording in case you didn't know ) . I have everything DC ever recorded + some boolegs . Never , ever thought I'd see Durutti Column mentioned on FR . Thanks !!
"Someone once talked me into buying a Smiths album back in the 80s. What a hunk of crap that was."
You could use it for target practice. :^D
This is about how they looked when I saw them play during the mid 80s. Now Morrissey's just another old fart who blends right in in LA. I saw an interview with him a coulple of months ago - he bashed Bush big time and it was extremely disappointing. If he indeed flirted with Right wing nationalism it sure doesn't show now. What a joke.
Well I hate to admit it, but I have several of his albums from the 80's. "Meat is Murder" had several songs that I liked. I just happened to drag it out last week and record it to mp3 format for the computer even. He was a weirdo even back then, but this comment is definately one of his more gutter remarks. But much like Boy George, you kinda liked this kind of fellow supporting the opposition, it made your side look very normal and the other side very weird (as it is).
See post 27.
Funny thing about the Smiths...after I first read the thread I started humming "Reel Around the Fountain." Couldn't get the line "Fifteen minutes with you, well...I wouldn't say no" out of my head. Then I realized: If I had fifteen minutes with Morrissey right now I would punch him in the nose.
"I checked myself into the Y-WCA, I said I like it here can I stay, do you have a vacancy, for a back scrubber.... " :=) LOL....
He probably got thrown out of the bathhouse!
And the unforgettable song, from "The Queen is Dead": "Some girls are bigger than others, some girls are bigger than others, some girls' mothers, are bigger than other girls' mothers...." Bwahaahah. Oh man, now I'm on a roll.... now you'll have to shoot me!
Bwahahahah! No doubt!
I had the Smiths and Morrisey pounded into me during my time in college radio...how I grew to hate them. Made the little buggers pay, though - I blasted Sun Ra and Big Black over the air at 'em. Made them shrivel like tiny mice!
Or the _Electronic_ CDs which were a partnership between him and Bernard Sumner from New Order. Incredible stuff.
" I blasted Sun Ra "
Some good musical tastes coming through on this thread . First it was Durutti Column , of whom I am a huge fan , and now Sun Ra . I have more records and CDs by DC and Sun Ra than by any other artists !
The Smith's did one good song: "How soon is now"

So true. Great tune though. Just listened again after many years. Stellar guitar by Johnny Marr.
He will never be the opening act for Ted Nugent, that's for sure.
The paper received "a record number of hits" after Drudge posted a link to their story. Otherwise, most people wouldn't even have heard of the Manchester Evening News, let alone heard what Morrissey had said.
Well my friend, your musical acumen is a lot better than mine. If you have never heard of this butthead, you can rest assured I certainly never have.
Should we care--I think not!!!!
