Furore over rocker's 'Bush slur'
June 10 2004 at 04:30PM
London - Morrissey, the outspoken lead singer of 1980s rockers The Smiths, has sparked an Internet storm with reported comments about United States President George Bush.
The Manchester Evening News said on Thursday that it had received a record number of hits after reporting on its website that Morrissey had interrupted a Dublin concert on Saturday with news of Ronald Reagan's death, adding that he wished Bush had died instead.
Morrissey's record company, Sanctuary Records, could not confirm the remarks.
"We do not have a recording of the gig, but as far as we can tell, Morrissey was just alerting the audience to the fact that Ronald Reagan had died," the newspaper quoted the company as saying. "He then simply followed that up with his comment about George Bush, which was his own opinion. He is no stranger to controversy."
'He is no stranger to controversy' A newspaper spokesperson said thousands of people, 90 percent from the United States, had contacted the site to complain. A few expressed support for the remarks.
Formed in Manchester in the early 1980s, The Smiths had a series of British hits, and a large cult following around the world, with songs including Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now and Shoplifters Of The World Unite.
A longtime proponent of celibacy and vegetarianism who once penned a song entitled Bigmouth Strikes Again, Morrissey drew criticism in the early 1990s when he appeared to flirt with right-wing British nationalism.
He now lives in Los Angeles and is touring Europe for the first time in a decade to promote his latest solo album, You Are The Quarry. - Sapa-AP

you took the words out of my mouth.
Morrissey is the third from the left .
Someone once talked me into buying a Smiths album back in the 80s. What a hunk of crap that was.
Agreed, just picked up the story on Yahoo. This guy is an underground cult type and his words are meaningless.
This little bitch is nothing more than a has been that never was.
"Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" and "Shoplifters of the World Unite."
This claim to fame will now come to the headlines??? The left is Sooooo desperate. Whats next?
Moderator, this piece of garbage may bring us all a skin rash or something. Just pull this garbage.
You shut your mouth
How can you say
He goes about things the wrong way?
He is Human and he needs to be loved
Just like everybody else does
Ah, you'd have had to have been a child of the 80's...
With Morrissey my mind tells me, "This guy's just going to end up a mean old man."
"Oh Morrissey, Morrissey I was sure not joking when I said I'd like to smash every tooth in your head.."
Oh well.. I USED to like the smiths.. :)
I saw this guy once on MTV singing "the more you ignore me" or whatever the hell that stupid song was, and I remember thinking that it had to be the gayest video and song I ever seen since that Wham song "wake me up before you go go". I thought his career died after that abomination but obviously there`s a market out there for extremely effeminate mincing males.
"A broken soul stares from a pair of watering eyes uncertain emotions force an uncertain smile..."
The Smith's did one good song: "How soon is now"
