Ronald Reagan has returned. The Gipper has brought America back again. Among other gifts to the nation, Reagan will take the country to church on Friday. A country currently divided by ideology and politics will be brought together in prayer. A fitting triumph for our greatest president.

June 6, 2004 -- Excerpts from President Reagan's remarks to veterans assembled at the U.S. Ranger Monument at Pointe du Hoc, France, on D-Day's 40th anniversary.
WE stand on a lonely, windswept point on the northern shore of France. The air is soft, but 40 years ago at this moment, the air was dense with smoke and the cries of men, and the air was filled with the crack of rifle fire and the roar of cannon.
At dawn, on the morning of the 6th of June, 1944, 225 Rangers jumped off the British landing craft and ran to the bottom of these cliffs. Their mission was one of the most difficult and daring of the invasion: to climb these sheer and desolate cliffs and take out the enemy guns. The Allies had been told that some of the mightiest of these guns were here and they would be trained on the beaches to stop the Allied advance.
The Rangers looked up and saw the enemy soldiers - the edge of the cliffs shooting down at them with machine guns and throwing grenades. And the American Rangers began to climb. They shot rope ladders over the face of these cliffs and began to pull themselves up. When one Ranger fell, another would take his place. When one rope was cut, a Ranger would grab another and begin his climb again. They climbed, shot back, and held their footing...

Return of Reagan ping. Striking back from the grave?
Do you really think that the other side will be praying?
Some appear to be moved and overcome.
I think they're already praying, though not to the same source of Wisdom and Power that the rest of us will be, and not for the same things.
They thought they were on a roll, that Bush was doomed and America was going to get the same kind of drubbing we got in Vietnam. And then the Iraqi's apparently succeeded in picking an interim government. And the "insurgency" fizzled out. And with President Reagan's passing the whole country was reminded who and what he was, who and what George Bush is, and who and what the dims were, are and will remain for the forseeable future.
Guard yourself. I think there's going to be a lot of pissed off lefties over the next couple of days. Watch for the polls to disappear from the news (as they tilt toward GWB). Watch for the news from Iraq to disappear from page 1 (as they fail to find enough bad things to report). Watch for the news about the economy to slip over to emphasize how bad a successful economy can be (causing inflation... oh doom!).

We shall see. I watched about 40 of ABC last night and I was amazed at how respectful they were about Reagan. The senior editors must not have made it back from the Hamptons in time.
There was a quite amazing discussion of Reagan, the man and his legacy, on MSNBC last night. Chris Matthews had Pat Buchanan and Jerry Brown as guests for commentary. Brown was quite extraordinary in his ability to describe Reagan's strengths and positives. For Buchanan and Brown to agree was amazing to see.
Brown even offered a critique of statist totalitarianism. Extraordinary!
Brown and Buchannan on stage together - I am amazed to learn that Matthews has such a developed sense of humor. Brown is not stupid you know, he is just a lunatic, not really a socialist, just a lunatic. We are lucky the left got him as we could have just as well have been stuck with him.
That is what they are all about. They hate civilization itself.
There is some irony here. I've noticed a sort of..."Oh, my gosh, we all have to get dressed up and go to church." There is some awkwardness here. The media has to deal with covering prayers at a state funeral at the national cathedral in Washington. Gee, where does that leave the separation of Church & State crowd?

One of my siblings commented (as we were watching the replay of the church service) that the athiests were probably [decidedly unhappy campers].
I kept waiting to hear some whining from the "Separation of Church & State" crowd.
I listened to the funeral on the radio at work. Thatcher's speech was powerful and moving. All in all, I thought it was a fitting tribute to a great president.
