The Stem Cell Cover-Up

Activists such as Christopher Reeve have it backward when they say that restrictions on funding for embryonic stem-cell research will prevent him from walking again.
Activists such as Christopher Reeve have it backward when they say that restrictions on funding for embryonic stem-cell research will prevent him from walking again.
Stem-cell research constitutes one of the most exciting areas in medical science. It promises to prevent, ameliorate and cure diseases for which there are now few if any treatments. Far easier is listing what stem cells don't have the potential to do, but here are a few of the wonders in progress:

Doctor Beverly, would you like to post the material you shared a few days ago regarding MAPC's? It was most instructive regarding adult stem cells.

I have read in Catholic papers about adult stem cells helping people countless of times. However, I have not even heard of even one case where embryonic stem cells helped anybody. Doesn't this seem demonic?

I heard on the radio about a man who had Parkinson's and used embryonic stem cells and died a terribly painful death because of it.

(BTW, I have read that CoEnzyme Q10 (a powerful antioxident) has helped people fighting Parkinson's.)

CoQ-10 and ENADA (NADH) coupled with Vitamin E works wonders.

When you put embryonic stem cells in the brain, often times bone, skin and nails grow subsequently killing the patient.

Thanks for the ping.

Interestingly Weissman was one of the first to report transdifferention of adult bone marrow derived hematopoietic stem cells in to liver. He published that in Nature a number of years ago.

The reparative nature of stem cells is not necessarily tied to transdifferentiation either. The reparative mechanism may not have anything to do with a transdifferention or even a fusion.

The WSJ had an article a while back on how venture capitalists are staying away from embryonic stem cells research in droves. Why? The experiments to date have been failures or worse; they may be multipotent, but they're uncontrollable. Adult stem cell research has many successes.

It really does seem that some researchers prefer ESC precisely because it's so Faustian.

Thanks for the opportunity, Marvin. It's amazing that the information on adult stem cells has received so little attention by the press - I can understand why the grant-seekers are invested in embryonic stem cells, but I can't understand why the press continues to ignore the advances in results from adult stem cells, the patient's own cells that carry no risk of rejection.

From an article that is unfortunately not available for free. I will forward the complete article to anyone who is interested.

Unexpected Potential of Adult Stem Cells

C. M. VERFAILLIE, R. SCHWARTZ, M. REYES and Y. JIANG Stem Cell Institute, Department of Medicine, University of Minnesota Medical School, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55455, USA Address for correspondence: Dr. Catherine Verfaillie, University of Minnesota Medical School, 420 Delaware Street S.E., MC716, Minneaplois, MN 55455. Voice: 612-625-0602; fax: 612-624-2436. verfa001@tc.umn.edu Ann. N.Y. Acad. Sci. 996: 231-234 (2003).
Key Words: multipotent adult progenitor cells • cell differentiation

We have isolated from marrow of humans, mouse, and rat, cells that we have termed multipotent adult progenitor cells or MAPCs.1-5 MAPCs appear in mesenchymal stem cell cultures after 25-35 population doublings, provided that cultures are maintained on fibronectin, not collagens or laminin, in the presence of low amounts or no fetal bovine serum, and in the presence of epidermal growth factor and platelet-derived growth factor, supplemented with leukemia inhibitor factor in mouse and rat. In addition, MAPCs are only found when cells are plated and maintained at low density, and are not allowed to grow to semi-confluence or confluence. When maintained under these conditions, MAPCs from 60% of human bone marrow have been culture-expanded for more than 50 and up to 80 population doublings, and MAPCs from mouse and rat bone marrow have been expanded for more than 80-150 population doublings. Of note, this expansion is not associated with obvious genetic instability, as cytogenetic evaluation of all human and rat cultures, and all but two subpopulations of mouse cultures have not revealed cytogenetic abnormalities, suggesting that this may not be the result of a transforming event. However, the status of most oncogenes and anti-oncogenes has not yet been evaluated. Furthermore, telomeres are apparently stable in mouse, rat, and human MAPC cultures, and telomerase is active. (emphasis is mine)

...if you really support the use of human embryonic stem cell please follow these instructions:

#1) Go to a clinic with your 'better half' and create a fertilized child embryo.

#2) Use that particular embryo for your own research and your own cure or to help others.

OPTION: If you are past the production point ask one of your children or grandchildren to provide(or be) the raw materials for your miracle cure.

First there were the "Interferons." They supposedly would cure all disease. Wrong. Most were far too toxic in "therapeutic" dosages and hence did not turn out to be the "Magic Bullet" science had hoped for.

Next came the cytokines and growth factors. After IL-12 they have pretty much disappeared with the exception of some neutrophil and platelet growth stimulators for specific cancer patients. No magic bullet there.

Now stem-cells. Stem cell transplants have limited application in hematological cancers. Do they and will they have application in neurological and other areas of medical research?? Personally, I would not put too much hope in stem cells as the "Answer" to all our problems. I hope they help, but the reality rarely lives up to our expectations. It will require years of research to see if they can do what we hope they can do.

Unless you've spent the last several years stranded on a deserted island, you've probably heard of at least some of these medical miracles. But here's what you may have missed. ...Each of the above therapies and experiments has involved cells that require no use of embryos."

Is there any counterpoint to this? Does any FReeper respectfully disagree on the merits of these facts?

If not, I continue to be astounded at the bias against the respect for unborn life in the media.

This is pretty much a compilation of all the stuff that has been out there.

IMO, he exaggerates the cure claims and then calls it a cover up.

The only people exaggerating the cure claims are folks who need a cure and are supporting the research. I can understand their need, but I have never said nor believed that any cure will be forthcoming in my lifetime.

The complexity of what they are dealing with will take longer than it took to figure out the human genome.

Of this I have no doubt.

I don't think that fact will convince anyone to stop investigating. The goal is a worthy one, but he means are what we are discussing.

This will certainly be a topic of conversation next year and beyond.

Forgive this one more note. Using the approved ESC lines, the true goal ought to be to discover just how to control stem cell differentiation into the three fundamental cell lines of the tissue structure of the human body. If the embryonic lines approved fro current federal funding could accomplish this, then it is likely that MAPCs will be 'backed up' in the stem cell cascade, to come forward again into the tissue lines needed. THAT is the only thing I would expect to be discovered via the study of embryonic stem cells and the applications of stem cells using stem cells from the patient to be treated will remain superior to using the stem cells from an embryonic other individual human with a different histamine code that causes tissue rejection in the target patient.

Sorry to keep you from your work. Be well.

You might be surprised when I say that I agree with you.

That is the primary reason that Bush said there were enough lines to study.

Only a few people have voiced complaint about the existing lines.

The fact is, that the death of Reagan and Nancy's support of the cause has brought about the proverbial knee jerk on both sides of this issue.

I am sorta in the middle, so I see them both.

I think what it is..........is that the Euro trash has the best samples and we can't get them.(or something to that effect)

Most scientists are liberal Bush haters as well.

Another ASC researcher who strongly supports funding for ESCs is Patricia Zuk, whose lab has shown that America's most plentiful natural resource - body fat - can provide a limitless source for stem cells capable of differentiating into bone, muscle, cartilage and fat that can be used to fill in scars and wrinkles.

Man, that is my kind of research!

Michael Fumento: a voice of reason in the sometimes hysterical arena of stem-cell research. ACS is practical, as well as promising and it doesn't require the death of another human. A right-on article in all ways.
