Interestingly Weissman was one of the first to report transdifferention of adult bone marrow derived hematopoietic stem cells in to liver. He published that in Nature a number of years ago.
The reparative nature of stem cells is not necessarily tied to transdifferentiation either. The reparative mechanism may not have anything to do with a transdifferention or even a fusion.
