I was watching the Tony Blair and President Bush press conference and an American reporter asked a question on the lines of do you believe Muslims and Christians worship the same God.

Ok, you can play president. How would you have answered the question?

I would have stated that my beliefs are different than Islamic beliefs (hence the two different religions), but that we can work together if they are not taking a hard line stance of supporting terrorism. Are our God's the same God? I don't think they are. If they were, we would all meet together in the same house of worship.

I'll ask it this way: How could a God who says "Love your neighbor" also say "massacre your neighbors"?

Sure you can, but you just don't want to. Suppose a man wants to visit a certain town. He stops and asks someone, who points him in the direction he needs to go. He travels for a while and stops again to ask someone else. Eventually he will arrive at the destination he seeks.

It is the lazy man who sits at home, saying that there is no such town because he has never seen it with his own eyes.

I don't think your problems were related to God or the Bible at that time.

Which problems?

You developed your own god and attributed properties to him that you feared.

No, it was the God described to me in the Bible and by an assortment of family members, Baptist clergy, Sunday school teachings etc. I simply took them at their word.

You didn't know God;

You have no clue what my religious experiences were. To this day I count them as some of my most important experiences in life. There is nothing to compare to the awe one feels in the presence of his God.

read the Bible as an atheist and I didn't think it proved God, it just showed that people believed in Him.

Hmmm. Interesting. I am not an atheist though and have less patience for atheists than I do for believers.

Jews don't believe in Jesus (condemned to death for blasphemy, by the way) or a Triune God, either. And yet we generally understand that Jews and Christians worship the same Supreme Being.
Islam holds Jesus of Nazareth in a much higher regard than Judaism, actually. He's recognized as having been born of a virgin through an act of God, and having been the "Messiah".

Pope John Paul II has also reiterated this point on numerous occasions.

Well contrary to some opinions, the Pope can be wrong. In this instance he is. Islam is a cult

I am not an atheist though

I'll ask the question I asked theists when I was an atheist: What evidence do you have that your god exists?

Complete and utter blasphemy. Allah is an anceint arabian moon god, and not the God of the Bible. Huge difference.

I don't know. Why ask me? Why not ask the citizens of Sodom and Gomorah? Why not ask Noah?

Trend, perhaps. But the wishes and thoughts of eveyone in an entire religion? Absurd. That's why I brought in the abortion killings reference. We know that most Christians are appalled by these actions. But to say that the actions we see on television by the very vocal and insane minority of Muslims is what all Muslims are like is absurd. I'm sure Mohammed Ali and Kareem Abdul Jabar would scoff at that generalization- as do my Muslim friends.

Go to Saudi Arabia and tell the religious police that Jesus was the Son of God. Let me know what happens.

Jews believe in the coming of Messiah, some of them recognised Jesus and became the first Christians, others wait for the another one and can still change their mind.

Those later ones have the mystery of Trinity veiled in the symbols of Old Testament. One example:

"And the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;
And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground,
And said, My Lord, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant" (Gen:18:1-3)

Most muslims love God as revealed by Abraham and Moses. They have many distortions in their religion, but it is the same God...

You are so wrong although you seem sincere. Allah is an old Arabian moon god, plain and simple.

If they were the same God then why are their messages so diferent?

I'll ask it this way: How could a God who says "Love your neighbor" also say "massacre your neighbors"?

Very easy answer. Because these militant islamists have chosen to believe a radical interpretation of a religious document, not unlike many factions of Christianity, Hindu, etc. It is simply what THEY believe. We think they are wrong, and they think we are wrong. Only God knows who is correct. And we'll see that on judgement day.
