Ahem. Let's use the language of the rulers, not the conquered.... I have not spoken German it has been fifty years, and I do not intend to now.

Charlemagne wasn´t French. At that time, there was no French or German nationality - his three sons divided the empire and therefore founded the (rough) nations of Franche, Benelux and Germany.

If you want to get technical about it, there was no Germany in 1800, just Prussia and the Holy Roman Empire. And Charlemagne was certainly a Frank.

Charlemagne spoke somewhat of German. He is considered to be the founder of the German nation ("Holy Roman Empire of the German nation"). A Frank is not a French. The four German tribes were the Saxes (Sachsen), the Franks (Franken), Alemannes (Alemannen) and the Bavarians (Bajuwaren). Indeed, the Germans have beaten the French more often than vice versa.
