How Not to Lose to Donald Trump
The Atlantic ^ | March 10, 2019 | Rahm Emanuel, 44th mayor of Chicago

Posted on 03/11/2019 8:11:17 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

A winning 2020 candidate needs three things: authenticity, credibility, and viability.

Few could have predicted that President Donald Trump would be this good at surrendering the political advantage of a strong economy. Not only is he now underwater in the three states that pushed him to victory in 2016—he’s now unexpectedly vulnerable in places such as Texas, Florida, and Ohio as well. His popularity rises to 50 percent or higher in states that total a mere 102 electoral votes. Probably of more concern to his campaign: He’s fallen below 40 percent approval in states encompassing a 201-electoral-vote bloc.

But Democrats haven’t won the 2020 election yet—and we’ve got a long way to go. At this stage in the 1992 election cycle, President George H. W. Bush was riding high, buoyed by America’s success in the Gulf War. Less than two years later, Bill Clinton moved into the White House. Trump might prove incapable of engineering such a dramatic reversal of fortune. But if the economy continues to hum and he racks up a couple of wins on foreign policy, the public’s perception of his presidency could shift. Democrats can’t bank on voters being more dismayed by him than they are enamored of us.

For that reason, Democrats need to take a strategic approach to the next 20 months. In the last election, Democrats were too quick to dismiss the possibility that voters would take Trump “seriously, not literally.” This time, we should not only take him seriously—we should take him literally when he tells us exactly how he’s going to run his reelection campaign.

Chicago, man.

Rahm should be paying attention to his own neck of the woods.

He also had Ross Perot and Bush 1 was not a very good campaigner.

Democrats should attack trump on caving to globalists by the plans to INCREASE H-1 and H-2 visas. But they won’t because the Uni-party™’s all on-board the Cheap Labor Express.

Ross Perot

I'd bet that Kristol & the Boys will launch a #NeverTrump candidate in 2020.

Um, so the point of increasing legal immigration is to LOWER American prevailing wages? Yeah, right. /sarc

All I want is an honest discussion about LEGAL immigration. But Republicans refuse to give one.

authenticity, credibility, and viability

Demolitioncrats CAN'T do the first two. That should lead to making the third one impossible. BUT, half of the voters are brain dead to the first two.

According to the latest polls, the ‘RATS’ best chance of winning the presidency in 2020 is to nominate a really old white guy as their candidate. Nancy’s “Sparklers” are only hurting the party. LOL.

There you go. Interesting thought. Perhaps a Romney-Jeb hybrid designed to siphon off 8% of the potential Trump vote could be cloned in a laboratory somewhere.

Whistling past the graveyard....an attempt to stay cheerful in a dire situation; to proceed with a task, ignoring an upcoming hazard, hoping for a good outcome.

Say this for Rahm, he is the eternal optimist, even to go so far as to invent his own set of “facts” to bolster his assertions.

But the difference in minority turnout between Obama and Clinton would have won the electoral college for Clinton in 2016. I think the states are Pennsylvania, Ohio and Wisconsin.

...capable of making Trump the first one-term president in more than a quarter century. But to get there, we’ll need to put some of our internal disagreements on hold...priorities should be to produce a candidate who will appeal to the widest swath of both moderate and progressive voters. Until January 21, 2021, we need to make sure that everything else is set aside.

Yep, democrat plan in is to run on unity, lies, and BS to get the win then on January 21, 2021 reveal who they really are... In short they'll play the flyover yahoos for fools, then take the 'win' and 'pivot' to Washington DC to consolidate phony elites and the deep state... Yahoos will be out in the cold once more with broken stupid promises...

He might have a point. If illegals get the right to vote and Florida and Texas start turning color and millennials want to play with the fire of socialism and the democrats make overtures to the Rust Belt and ballot harvesting continues... then these are legitimate problems for the Republicans.

You can only pray that the democrats are too divided and too caught up with Trump derangement so that they are ineffective in capitalizing on these advantages. But it would be a good step for Republicans to start to address these problems.

For example, what are the advantages of a great GDP if half the country don’t pay income tax or if the millennials don’t care about work? Why is there a growing divide between the middle class and the very wealthy. What can Republicans do to ensure that access is available to the wealthy class. If it access isn’t available then socialism seems more attractive in its call to tax the rich. This needs to be addressed effectively.

Nah. All the winner needs are enough votes which can be bought through fraud and bribery.

Trumps comments at CPAC have been mischaracterized. He was talking about the ideals of immigration

He’s making a bet that if he labels Democrats “socialists” frequently enough, he’ll be able to drive a wedge that scares swing voters out of the Democratic fold.

It is a legitimate issue.

But Trump is probably smart enough to avoid overkill.

It's not like plenty of other people won't be talking about it.
