McCain says he regrets picking Palin as running mate

Sen. John McCain

(R-Ariz.) said he regrets choosing former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) to be his running mate during the 2008 presidential campaign.

The New York Times reported on Saturday that McCain, while still defending Palin’s performance, said in his upcoming book “The Restless Wave” that he wishes he had instead selected former Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.)

His advisers reportedly had warned against choosing Lieberman, who was once a Democrat, stating that Lieberman’s support of abortion rights could divide Republicans.

“It was sound advice that I could reason for myself,” he writes. “But my gut told me to ignore it and I wish I had.”

In a new HBO documentary, McCain goes on to say that not choosing Lieberman was “another mistake" that he made in his political career.

Lieberman told The Times that he didn’t know McCain felt that way.

“It touched me greatly,” he said of the film.

The Times reported that Lieberman recently visited McCain, 81, at his ranch in Arizona where the senator is recovering from his brain cancer treatment and surgery for an infection.

Recently released excerpts from McCain’s upcoming memoir indicate that he doesn’t know how much time he has left to live while battling the glioblastoma he was diagnosed with last year.

Although the memoir isn’t entirely political, McCain still takes swings at Trump.

McCain writes that the president seems to care more about “the appearance of toughness” than American values, chiding Trump's coziness with Russian President Vladimir Putin, in particular.

“The Restless Wave: Good Times, Just Causes, Great Fights, and other Appreciations.” will be released May 22.

There were only two good reasons to vote for McShame — obama and Palin. By embracing defending supporting the Islamic infiltrator obama — and dissing Palin ——McShame Shames himself right now on his very deathbed. I wouldn’t want to get anywhere near where he’s going. Not even in an asbestos suit

John McCain should have ran for president years ago.

Bush and Cheney did not create a good GOP succession field in their years. The Republicans were wiped out in 2006, and recreated and rebuilt a GOP coalition in 2010 and 2014, but they failed to listen to the voters.

It took an outsider like Donald Trump to shake up the GOP and American politics.

McCain was FORCED into picking Palin because he was such an asshole to conservatives that the BOTTOM DROPPED OUT regarding his support. The Democrats he was counting on to form some type of ‘new coalition’ wanted nothing to do with him, since they already had someone they liked.

Sure he could have picked Lieberman, and with that, probably taken the mantle from Reagan for the BIGGEST BLOWOUT in modern election history...obviously with him on the losing side in this case.

He’s a very sick man and he should be APOLOGIZING for what he did to the country...it’s very sad to see him off this way.

The ONLY reason..I repeat the ONLY reason why I voted for that sack of prunes is because of Sarah Palin..otherwise I would have stayed home..McCain, Obama..both were the same, same politically, same agenda..Sarah Palin made me go to the polls in looney California and vote because she was AMAZING..she had a great life in Alaska, 80 percent approval rating, both Democrats and Republicans adored her..she felt it was a big honor to be a VP nominee, she had no idea he was only picking her to be his patsy when he lost. Look at McCain throughout the election, did that look like a guy who wanted to be President..he was kissing Obama’s ass, saying we have nothing to fear from an Obama Presidency..he was Obama’s biggest cheerleader. Sarah didn’t need McCain’s crap, I wish she had told McCain to suck a lemon the day he called her

Had George Allen not lose to Jim Webb, a man years later who is probably to the right politically of Allen,

Allen could have beaten Obama.

Allen was the last old-school Southerner in Virginia.

Exactly. McCain is foreshadowing and paving the way for Hillary’s last hurrah someday. It will be identical.

The total undermining of Sarah was a foreshadowing of what they are attempting on the President.

Remember 08-—McCain or Romney. BLEH.

Mr. McCain is neither an officer or a gentleman. He is just a bitter old turncoat. The page will turn fast after he is gone and forgotten. History will wonder how Arizona could have allowed him to be a Senator for so long.

If Allen had won reelection, they’re would have been no McCain in ‘08 because Allen was the frontrunner.

John McCain should have ran for president years ago.

He did run in 2000 and he should have been in prison before that. And he wouldn't have had my vote in CO without Sarah Palin.

True, true.

Palin came into a political trap as a 2008 VP candidate.

Sarah is too good to be affiliated with McCain.

She should be the one with regrets for agreeing to serve with the designated loser, but she has too much class to say so.

All she got out of it was multiplied grief.

When it comes to Republicans, John regrets all. Except the votes he hoodwinked as a D in R’s clothing.

No one could have beaten the Magic Negro.

Yeah, they could have.

That was why McCain was nominated, because he was the one who couldn't.

Hey, John, you lost because you were not a good candidate. You were the one running for President. People vote for the President not an afterthought vice president.Man up and take the blame before you check out of the hotel.

Me too. I only voted for him because of Sarah. His campaign’s treatment of her ruined her future political career. McCain was the left’s Darling for his career except for the few months between his nomination and the election. After the election he went right back to being their darling. I wonder if any Republicans (or anybody) actually likes him. Oh yes, Lindsey Graham does. McCain’s nickname in the senate is reputed to have been “McNasty “.
