At the outset of the general election campaign, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are running neck-and-neck in polls in several battleground states that are likely to decide the winner.
While state-specific polling is still scant, the handful of surveys conducted in the last few weeks show Clinton leading in Ohio and Virginia, while she and Trump are tied in Pennsylvania and each has claimed a lead in one of two surveys conducted in Florida. Trump leads in North Carolina.
Nationally, Clinton holds a 5.5 percentage point lead, according to the Real Clear Politics polling average.
Most of the state-level surveys were not conducted until before Clinton was proclaimed the Democrats' presumptive nominee, but after Trump had secured the GOP's nomination in May. Also, none of the polls were conducted in the days since the Orlando nightclub shooting, which has brought the issues of Islamist extremism, homegrown terrorism and gun control to the forefront of the campaign.
All of the surveys conducted are of registered voters, not likely voters, because the election is still five months away.
Here is a breakdown of state-by-state polls:
-- Florida: The Democratic firm Public Policy Polling conducted a survey form June 2-5 and found Trump with a 1 percentage point lead. Mason Dixon polled Florida voters in late May and gave Clinton a 3-point lead.
-- Ohio: CBS News polled the Buckeye State from May 16-19, and showed Clinton had a 5-point lead.
-- Pennsylvania: PPP is the lone firm to poll here, and scored the race an even tie.
-- Virginia: The polling firm Gravis surveyed voters on May 24, showing Clinton with a 4-point lead.
-- North Carolina: Civitas, a Republican firm, polled from May 21-23, showing Trump with a 4-point lead.
-- Georgia: Not normally included on a list of swing states, the increasing Latino population could make the state competitive for Democrats. A PPP survey of voters in the state showed Trump had a 9-percentage-point lead.
The media is really pushing the idea that this race is competitive. I have a very hard time believing that.
Hillary has had a helluva time dealing with an old, crazy socialist. Trump will be ... harder.
Very good news. From the last two polls Trump is up 4 in OH, and Cankles is up 4; Trump has consistently led (slightly) in FL; he has consistently led in GA and NC. He has consistently slightly trailed in VA.
PA has been either a tie or a 1-point Cankles lead.
Given the media assault on Trump over the last two weeks, this is a huge win.
It's the only outcome that would sell the next poll.
The internal polls are the only ones that matter and it will be a while before anyone starts leaking those.
This is nerve racking. Our freedom is at stake here, everything is.
It is what it is !
I am not nervous yet. It is still way to early and the blood pressure for you or me doesn’t need the hit. October will be telling. We still have the FBI, the two conventions, the 2 VP picks, and a lot of other stuff to see before worry starts.
You laid it on the line perfectly, rurgan!!
I keep praying and praying day and night with all my heart and soul!
It is literally mind-boggling that the fate of our nation as well as what’s left of the free world rests on the election of one singularly exceptionally patriotic 70-year-old man in Donald Trump!!
I have been on the Trump Train really since the first debate on Fox and have been reduced to a bundle of raw nerve endings!
It’s just so hard to understand and accept why he is facing so much insane resistance!
PLEASE GOD GUIDE DONALD TRUMP SAFELY TO THE WHITE HOUSE!!
If Hillary takes Sanders for VP to get his supporters and stop what the GOP did to Trump, we are toast.
BTW Karl Rove, thanks for your pushing illegals on G. Bush to get money for big business profits etc. The GOP did not stop the transformation of America. Step by step this has gone on since the beginning of the 1900s.
Granted Hellary has at least plus 10% fraud advantage, There is zero point zero enthusiasm for her and at least half the bernie people absolutely loath and despise her. I do not believe any of these polls. If she ends up winning any states, it will be 100% fraud
GA is not a swing state. It will go solidly for Trump.
Amen.
