A Letter to Donald Trump Supporters With One Big Question
The Atlantic ^ | August 14, 2015 | Conor Friedersdorf

Posted on 08/14/2015 6:28:55 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

You’re right to mistrust conventional politicians. But why do you think he’ll treat you any better?

Dear Donald Trump Supporters:

You’re fed up. This much I understand. You’re fed up with politicians who say one thing on the campaign trail, like that they’re going to stop illegal immigration, and then do another in Washington; you’re fed up with insiders who rig the system for their benefit at your expense; and you’re fed up with coastal media elites and their insular subculture.

On some level I sympathize. In the last presidential election, I couldn’t bring myself to vote for any of the candidates. I just left it blank. I wanted nothing to do with my awful options.

What I don’t understand is why you think a President Trump would treat us better. If you elect the billionaire, what makes you think that he will use whatever talents that he possesses to address your grievances rather than to benefit himself? After all, he’s a man who has zealously pursued his self-interest all his life....

I am not a Trump supporter, but let me answer this question as someone who wouldn’t be overly upset with Trump winning the whole thing.

Donald Trump has a genuine, sincere love of America. He doesn’t want to fundamentally change it. He doesn’t view large sections of it’s citizens as the enemy. He isn’t beholden to any special interest.

After eight years of an administration that pits groups against each other, which holds old and deep grudges against our society and culture, and who has given away power and wealth to slices of the population who they feel an affinity for, it will be good to have someone who simply says: Let’s make America great again.

No kidding. When obama was first elected I told the wife we could go to the shopping mall, blind fold ourselves, and just pick the first person we touched, and that person would be a better President.

Actually, same goes for Bush today.

Um...not everyone in the US gets it. I despise the media and I a hot the GOPe and I have no frreakin idea whatsoever why the hell anybody would vote for a loud mouth New Yorker who discovered conservatism about 45 minutes before he decided to run for President (which was about 30minutes after he got off the phone with Bill Clinton)...a man who does nothing but talk a tough game but has no track record of having a single sincerely held conservative belief.

ESPECIALLY when you have a man like Ted Cruz running.

It makes literally no sense whatsoever.

From the article:

Right now, Trump is telling you all the things you want to hear.

Free Republic, for all the intelligence of most of its members, is amazingly gullible whenever someone comes along and tells it exactly what it wants to hear.

I don't think you intended to do so, but this is an Obama style false dichotomy. "Either my deal with Iran, or war...."

There are a lot of other candidates for President in 2016 who also love this country. Obamaism, and Trump, are not the only choices we have.

LOL. They all are. If not, then which one is not telling those he wants to vote for him what he thinks they want to hear?

The Atlantic is doing a good job vetting Trump. They are concerned. He has a lifetime of achievement, prevailing in the rough-and-tumble business world and a track record that is transparent and always winning in the long run. They are carefully vetting him.

Funny, I don't recall them carefully vetting Obama. A man with no track record. With no successes to speak of. With no history.

Maybe I missed that article or series of articles, can someone please post a link?

LMAO

Right now, Trump is telling you all the things you want to hear.

The author must be new to political campaigning. Telling your prospective constituency what they want to hear has always been a pretty good way to garner their votes.

But maybe there is a candidate out there -- presumably the author's, but he fails to mention it -- who's hit upon the novel idea of winning by telling people what the *don't* want to hear....

I have been, and remain, for CRUZ! But honestly it's getting harder and harder to stay neutral on Trump when rags like the Atlantic are wetting themselves over him.

It’s touching. And I know that when *I* look around for advice on political stuff, I turn immediately to the Atlantic. Just not in the way they would like.

My answer to the author’s question...I trust him over the GOP elite because he has too much pride to not deliver on key issues. The author makes a stupid point that Mr Trump abandoned AC...so what. If he wasn’t making money there any longer, why stay? He didn’t elect those who killed the golden goose but he sure had to deal with them.

I agree. The GOPe is nefarious. But there are some good folks running...Cruz for example.

I won’t lie, I am completely divided about Trump. Although I like that he doesn’t let people beat him up I don’t agree with the way he responds.

Actually, he would have to work within the confines of the Constitution (ideally). Not like our current occupant.

There is a vast difference between running private corps and winding the way to get people to support your agenda. “You’re Fired” won’t cut it.

I’m still for Cruz, too. But if it’s down to Trump vs Any Dem, then I won’t have to hold my nose nearly as much as I did with Mittens.

I have no illusions that Trump will work well with Congress. He won’t. Even — and perhaps especially — with a GOP congress. And not through any failure of Trump. He being an anti-Establishment type, Boehner and McConnell will work to thwart him even harder than they would a Dem president (which, let’s face it, they currently don’t work to thwart at all).

But at least he’ll serve as a check on the Congress F’ing up the country any further.

What you say is VERY TRUE there are many candidates to chose from however Trump is the ONLY one that will NOT be bought and paid for !!!!!
That is the HUGE difference all of them end up beholden to their donors not the people!!!!!

Free Republic, for all the intelligence of most of its members, is amazingly gullible whenever someone comes along and tells it exactly what it wants to hear.

But what we want to hear is no longer more of something; free stuff; free more stuff...

We need a lot less of a lot of things.

Your response is a false dichotomy. The question was concerning Donald Trump, not concerning other candidates. If the answer is X for Donald Trump, it does not exclude X from other candidates as well.

Only you suggested that my answer applies only to Donald Trump.
