JUDY WOODRUFF: So, a related issue, and that is the flag, the Confederate Flag.
It came down today in South Carolina. There was a big celebration. But, meanwhile, yesterday, David, at the Capitol, there was this sudden partisan flare-up over the flag. Why does this issue keep coming up right now?
DAVID BROOKS: Well, I guess, in my view, the reason the flag should come down is just a matter of civic politeness. I have said this before on this program. If a large percentage of your fellow citizens disapprove of something, fine, just be civically polite and accept their offense and say, no, I’m going to respect you.
In both these issues, there is a large culture war element. What Donald Trump was exploiting was the fact that people like us and people like my newspaper would come down hard on him for saying those things about immigrants....

Okay, by that reasoning, let’s send all the illegals back home, get rid of Obamacare, just for a start.

I saw 6-8 trucks flying Confederate flags today. Something I'm seeing daily.
The Confederate flag issue isn't an abstraction down here in the South. It's not about racism to Southerners, it's about culture, and a lot of people resent their culture being shamed and erased. Flawed? Of course, like every subculture under a microscope. Be careful of suppressing symbols of others; think of your own core symbology, and consider how you would react to calls to pull it down and erase it from public view.
While suppression of the Confederate flag is moving fast, backlash is building. Whither "celebrate diversity", "coexist", and "tolerance"? Were they just a ruse until power could be achieved?

That is why we must push to have the Democrat party change its name. The Democrat party is the party of slavery, Jim Crow, the KKK, and civil rights abuse. I find the hypocrisy of their use of the word democrat offensive.
Where has Gov. Palin EVER wore, flown, or supported the Confederate flag. None, never, and I would be very surprised otherwise. Brook’s article is a bit incomprehensible and nowhere says Palin did. It simply points out that some supporters still might as a new means to disparage here. Shame on him.
The thing is...I've always been a live and let live person. But the recent “developments” are making me lean more toward an opinion that really isn't too flattering. Toward other people....or myself for that matter. I hazard to guess this is not unique to me.
So to the groups that are promoting the divisiveness.. Good job!!
The flag’s been around for over 150 years and this summer the anti-American left decided to make an issue of it.
"Immigrant" now used inclusive of "illegal immigrants" is a pet peeve to me.

He is completely wrong. When dealing with an adversary that peceives any courtesy as a weakness and any concession as something to be exploited, the only wise course of action is to avoid courtesy and concessions. If the CBF offends the left and it’s allies, then of course it should be flown more often. Like you, I’ve never flown the CBF. While my views are clearly southern sympathetic, I’ve never seen the point in flying the CBF till very recently.
I’m seeing lots of battle flags in the backs of trucks and small groups of people with flags along the roads in east Tennessee.
Strange how the flag wasn’t an issue during the 60’s civil rights activities.
I guess David Brooks just needs the teeth slapped out of his ignorant face.
