NSA surveillance fears give Republicans a great in with young Americans
The Guardian ^ | June 14, 2013 | Harry J. Enten

Young people are more Democratic and pro-Obama – but they're even more pro-liberty. The GOP should seize this chance.

You don't have to be a rocket scientist to know that the Republican party has a problem with the millennial generation. Americans born after 1980 voted by some 25pt for President Obama over Mitt Romney, while the rest of the electorate narrowly supported the Republican candidate. It's my view that Republicans can do little to attract most Millennials – but privacy may be the exception.

Our Guardian poll conducted by Public Policy Polling indicated that Democrats were more supportive of President Obama's position on the National Security Agency (NSA) leaks than other parts of the electorate:

• 58% of Democrats were OK with the government collecting data on internet or phone data, compared with 44% of voters overall

• By a 4pt margin, Democrats were more fearful of putting national security at risk than of infringing civil liberties. That compares with a 22pt margin going the other way among the overall sample

• Only 28% of Democrats said that the information learned made them less likely to support President Obama against 48% of the electorate overall

These results aren't too surprising given that a political base usually support its leader. That's why you saw far more Democrats supporting Obama's actions on collection and access of phone and internet records than for a somewhat similar policy under President Bush, while Republicans were far more receptive of the policies under Bush than under Obama.....

Is there anyone else out there who thinks politicizing the situation is the wrong thing to do?

I mean I for one AM GLAD the various alphabet agencies are out there listening to the chatter and trying to defeat terrorism. That’s EXACTLY what they are paid to do. And I think a good percentage of those folks are actually patriotic, red blooded, mom-and-pop-and-apple-pie Americans.

But the flip side is ugly. Retaining records on Joe6Pk so that ANY administration in the future can use it against him is sleaze defined. We all know the vagaries of politics and how the winds blow and change, at any time it could become popular to discredit and demean anyone - for example, are you a MEAT EATER?

MEAT EATERS ARE BAD!!

Fer sure as hell, getting sent to a FEMA camp because I like a nice rib-eye AIN’T my idea of America.

Any data or records that don’t DIRECTLY AND IMMEDIATELY relate to terrorism should be destroyed. But they won’t...

Wow. I didn’t realize the margin was that overwhelming. Didn’t whites under 30 go for Romney ?

To paraphrase the 'mechanic' in 'Vacation'...those Americans under 35 got sh*t for brains.

Thank you, public schools. Of course; that IS your agenda.

I live in Mexico. The Zeta’s have high priorities to kidnap many of the high tech computer geeks. They need these people to keep computer software up to date and keep under surveillance people they are collecting data for later kidnapping. I personally know of 2 people who are in hiding because of these threats. The Zeta’s have VERY sophisticated GPS locating, video cameras monitoring everyone who is banking, where they are going. I really don’t like it that the NSA is eavesdropping on everyone, but it’s one of the threats the human race has to face. I would hope that the democratically elected government knew where the Zeta’s are working and what the threat they are to terorrism and taking hostages.

Kind of a oxymoron-ic statement - like saying fat people are pro sundaes and milkshakes, but even more pro health.

Thank you anyway. I’ll keep my 4th Amendment rights instead of having any patriotic hack circumvent it without cause or warrant by a legitimate court.

Unfortunately....there are way too many GOP siding with Obama and the NSA on this. Anyone who saw the tantrum thrown by Michelle Malkin on Fox n Friends last week...showing her 100% support for the domestic spying (and comparing Snowden with Manning)....knows that the GOP is screwing up royally on this issue

The conservatives can really win over younger voters by emphasizing less government/less government intrusion...but looks like that is not happening

The surveillance hasn't upset too many elected republicans, so where's the 'in'? The idea presumes differences among the parties that are deeper than branding.

Bravo Sierra.
The Republicans are just as much in favor of this as the Democrats.

Just like they are OK with the indefinite detention of American citizens.

This July 4th will be a day of mourning for me.

Professional conservative commentators are very reluctant to admit to themselves just how bad the situation is. Their comfy income and status would be jeopardized if things really have changed.

Someone who believes a few more Republican congressmen and a President Romney could straighten things out are going to see Snowden as a traitor, while those who see the war for what it is knows that government is the primary enemy.
