After Michele Bachmann announced her retirement this week, many people Republicans included thought the move would make it easier for the GOP to hold MN-06 with a fresh face. Looks like Bachmanns already-announced opponent, Jim Graves, agrees:
Minnesota Democratic congressional candidate Jim Graves plans to halt his campaign to replace Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann in Congress just days after she ruled out a re-election run, according to his top aide.
Campaign manager Aaron Wells told The Associated Press that Graves will issue a statement later Friday explaining the decision. Graves was quoted as saying the goal of unseating Bachmann was complete.
That leaves both parties without a candidate
and Republicans with a Cook index of R+8 in the district. Small wonder that Graves would rather spend his money on other pursuits.

What are the odds he just wanted to,retire on the campaign donations?
Strange.
Is there a scandal going on here?
I know the media will never tell us, I’m just wondering.
What a pathetic human being if I only ran to unseat someone -he had no plan to serve his constituents or a fire in his belly to make changes - he just hated someone enough to try to bring them down.
Follow the money. Graves lost his outside financial backing when Bachmann decided not to run. There isn’t enough bribe money in the race for him to become a ‘Rat stooge.
“What are the odds he just wanted to, retire on the campaign donations?”
7.Personal use of political contributions is prohibited. Elec. Code § 253.035.
(The most likely reason I’ve seen for Weiner’s mayoral campaign is that it will allow him to use his campaign funds for whatever fudging he has in mind. I’d imagine, for example, the campaign could buy him a BMW super car and he’d keep it afterwards.)
I know that many politicians have bought themselves mansions, to use as campaign headquarters.
He’s dropping out because facing Bachmann was his best (only?) shot at winning. The district is solid GOP, but the left’s relentless attacks on Bachmann have hurt her substantially in recent elections. It’s why she only won by a couple of points last year, even though Romney carried the district by ~15. Another GOP candidate would crush this guy.
Something is strange about her withdrawal. I was getting fundraising emails several times per week before she dropped out. She may have not liked her prospects.
So cute, but don't you know, laws only apply to them Tea Party types...
More likely the RNC cut her funding since their loser consultants told them so.
Candidates haven’t been able to use political contributions to federal elections coffers for personal use since the 80s. Most use any leftover funds to help other candidates, i.e., to buy chits. To a pol that’s more valuable.
“I know that many politicians have bought themselves mansions, to use as campaign headquarters.”
Name one.
Harry Reid.
That’s good to know, though there is probably a way around this.
You don’t think politicians will really close one perk without a way to compensate for it?
oh, hell ... Harry made his $$$$ shaking down real estate interests in LVNV. That little twerp didn’t even arrive in DC till the 80s. By that time the conversion to personal funds loophole had closed. His political contribution are chump change compared to the LV shakedown $$$.
Um, I don’t remember Rep. Bachman saying anything about “retirement”. She said she wasn’t running again for Representative of her district.
