7.Personal use of political contributions is prohibited. Elec. Code § 253.035.

(The most likely reason I’ve seen for Weiner’s mayoral campaign is that it will allow him to use his campaign funds for whatever fudging he has in mind. I’d imagine, for example, the campaign could buy him a BMW super car and he’d keep it afterwards.)

Candidates haven’t been able to use political contributions to federal elections coffers for personal use since the 80s. Most use any leftover funds to help other candidates, i.e., to buy chits. To a pol that’s more valuable.

Um, I don’t remember Rep. Bachman saying anything about “retirement”. She said she wasn’t running again for Representative of her district.
