Disturbed gut flora during the first years of life is associated with diagnoses such as autism and ADHD later in life, according to a study.
The study is part of the ABIS study. More than 16,000 children born in 1997–1999, representing the general population, have been followed from birth into their twenties. Of these, 1,197 children, corresponding to 7.3%, have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, communication disorder or intellectual disability.
Children who had repeated ear infections during their first year of life had an increased risk of being diagnosed with a developmental neurological disorder later in life. It is probably not the infection itself that is the culprit, but the researchers suspect a link to antibiotic treatment. They found that the presence of Citrobacter bacteria or the absence of Coprococcus bacteria increased the risk of future diagnosis.
One possible explanation may be that antibiotic treatment has disturbed the composition of the gut flora in a way that contributes to neurodevelopmental disorders.
"Coprococcus and Akkermansia muciniphila have potential protective effects. These bacteria were correlated with important substances in the stool, such as vitamin B and precursors to neurotransmitters which play vital roles orchestrating signaling in the brain. Overall, we saw deficits in these bacteria," says Angelica Ahrens.
The present study also confirms that the risk of developmental neurological diagnosis in the child increases if the parents smoke. Conversely, breastfeeding has a protective effect, according to the study.
It turned out that children who were later diagnosed had low levels of several important fats in the umbilical cord blood. One of these was linolenic acid, which is needed for the formation of omega 3 fatty acids.
The same group also had higher levels than the control group of a PFAS substance.

Antibiotics and a possible deficit of good guy bacteria in the mothers may have started the kids off to a disadvantage, which wasn’t countered with replacement of better bacteria or, perhaps, just not getting enough soluble fiber to regrow what was there, if it was not completely absent.
Smoking by parents, PFAS, and low Omega-3 fatty acids also appeared to be a problem specifically with those children having these issues. These can be addressed, in various ways, too.
Thank you. What is the solution for children with these conditions? Fish oil / omega 3 supplements? probiotics?
I’m always amazed at the suspected causes and effects these researchers can identify.
“...researchers suspect a link to antibiotic treatment...antibiotic treatment has disturbed the composition of the gut flora in a way that contributes to neurodevelopmental disorders.”
Do you give your kid antibiotics to cure childhood ear infections which disturb the gut flora leading to later neurological problems. Wow.
I had to go on IV antibiotics ten days after giving birth.
My son’s digestion changed, and he developed colic, and spent the next five months screaming.
The signs of developmental problems were obvious to me within the month, another two years for the doctors to agree.
The goal is to be aware of these concerns before you know they are your child's concern, and prevent the issues or augment at a very early age.
Mothers could take probiotics and/or limit antibiotic use, before birth. They could eat more Omega-3 foods or supplements and make sure their child gets Omega-3s. They could stop smoking during pregnancy and for the earlier years of the child, afterward. They could filter out PFAS from their water and minimize products with them, including some lubricants and fire-retardant materials like some non-stick pots and pans. It also probably wouldn't hurt to have better air and vacuum filtration options, too, perhaps approaching HEPA quality.
These are things that come to my mind.
Possibly those dreadful vaccine “cocktails” given to babies disturb the guy flora.
This is true about my youngest he had bad ear infections for many months before he was 3.
My take... autism is from vaccines. ADHD are just normal kids with abnormal parents.
Do you know of any studies that show that fecal transplants help autism?
My GS’ gastro doctor said he would consider a fecal transplant if my son can show him some creditable studies that show it helps.
My son is searching but the more studies the better.
A fecal transplant might help with the bowel problems that many suffer with autism.

Thank you. My son does a lot of research but I will read these articles and send them to him.
Thank you.
