I’ve had it for years.. but I apologize that the quality is so bad. One day, I may remake it so it is much better quality..

“I personally could not care how old a computer is as long as it is capable of doing what I want it to use it for.”

Ahhh! Precisely and exactly! To many the “need” to have the absolute newest digital gadget, including computers, is like an addiction.

I run old computers and old software simply because it all does what I want it to and as efficiently as I want it to. It’s a little like having that old Chevy car, if it still gets me where I want to go with little to no trouble, why buy new?

Ubuntu will work. Easy peasy. Most PC and laptops will run way better on Ubuntu since it doesn't come with all the bloatware Windows does.

I have been dual or triple booting nearly all of my computers for decades along with setting up virtual machines. There are still many programs and games that are designed for Windows and do not work well if at all in Ubuntu.

Drivers are often more refined for Windows than Ubuntu, much of the time Windows runs better on the same PC than Ubuntu. This is true for components from touchpads to GPUs.

In addition, most people know there way around Windows better than Ubuntu so when an issue arises it typically takes more research to figure it out.

Ubuntu is more difficult to run. Requires using command line.

Won't run a lot of popular programs and games.

Won't run Android apps.

You make a lot of good and valid points, but actually Waydroid does a very good job with many if not most Android apps and games.

https://waydro.id/

However, like a lot of experiences in Ubuntu... it is more difficult to get working than installing BlueStacks or tweaking Windows 11’s native Android support.

I am actually using Edge in Ubuntu right now because I could not remember Waydroid’s name. This is working fine, but everything about the OS is just a little more difficult to get working smoothly for people who have not been farting around with it for years.

Just getting the touchpad to work the same as it does in Windows can sometimes be a bit of a challenge... not to mention that things from the buttons to fonts can sometimes be difficult to get just the way that you want them.

I still have Windows 7 on one old computer and a mish.ash of 7.5, 8 and 10/11 on my computer from 2009.

I wish they would leave the older systems alone. They worked without all that new junk on them.

Gigabyte pc from 2015 (built myself) and a HP z240 sff from 2018. Paid $135 at Amazon. Retail was $3,200 in the reviews I read in a google search. Imagine spending that kind of money only to be told nope, can’t run the great Windows 11!!

Neither can run Windows 11 unless I use some 3rd party instructions. Using the free Oracle VM VirtualBox I installed Windows 11 in a virtual window on the Gigabyte pc that runs Windows 10 Pro.

I would not buy a newer pc just to run Windows 11.

Microsoft Office 2019 Professional Plus 1PC Lifetime Full Retail Package DVD. $50. Is the current Office 365 any better than the 2019 Office? I doubt it. I’ll bet many corporations are running 2019 and earlier editions.
____________

Microsoft Office 2019 Professional Plus 1PC Lifetime Full Retail Package DVD.
$50 on eBay. 6 available from a seller. The biggest barrier is that it is on DVD. These young uns have never seen a computer with a DVD player. I have computers and laptops with DVD players, so could easily hustle the DVD contents onto a USB flash drive for someone.

I thought it was up to Office 2022 now? I have 2019 but I only run it on W10, it won’t run on anything earlier than that.

Wrong... No it is not. All those are absolutely not true.

Your perspective is very obviously 10 years behind the times my friend.

You might want to educate yourself concerning the new distros before making claims like this. You are obviously making claims based on complete ignorance and lack of personal knowledge about how they “now” work and you are making yourself look foolish.

StackSocial is currently offering Office Pro Plus 2019 for both Win and Mac for $30. This current offer expires in 4 days, but StackSocial regularly offers it in the $25-$35 price range.

I would not buy a newer pc just to run Windows 11.

Neither would I... functionally there is not that much of a difference between Windows 10 and Windows 11. Although I do have plans to put together or purchase a more modern gaming machine for running flight simulators in the near future.

I purchased a couple of used HP Elite 8300 Ultra Slim Desktop computers in 2019. They are a little smaller than a typical Television DVD player and actually did come with DVD player/recorders built in. Their primary purpose is to use with a program called "Audials One" that we use to record high definition video streams to watch on our big screen televisions. We also use them for media servers, playing games, surfing the internet, etc. etc..

They have 3rd generation core i7 processors and I added GPUs so they are actually quite capable for computers that were released in 2012. With a little tweaking they will actually run Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 with high enough settings, FPS and resolution to still look OK, but they will not run X-Plane 12 because of limitations of the type of GPUs they are capable of handling.

They were business computers originally and came with Windows 10 Pro. For our purposes there has been no good reason to “upgrade” them to Windows 11 even though the current Microsoft licenses will allow this and they do have POPCNT support so they will not have a problem with the 24H2 Windows 11 update.

We likely will upgrade them soon because the Windows 10 expiration date is October 14, 2025, after which security issues will eventually become more of a concern, especially with computers like these which are left on 24 hours a day and used as media servers. But more importantly it is hard to say when Microsoft will tighten up their upgrade policies for these old licenses. Right now we can upgrade to Windows 11 pro for no charge but Microsoft is under no obligation to continue this.

Windows 11 does have a few minor advantages that are a little outside the scope of the discussion that this thread has gone into. And no, the primary program that I use these with, Audials One has no equivalent that I am aware of in Linux.

I should mention that the Audials One program with the “lifetime license” is nearly always “on sale” for $20... so if you are interested... do not buy it for the advertised list price of $80. https://audials.com/en/home

Overall, I would say that I have been very satisfied with nearly all of the Microsoft products that I have been using for decades. Most of the problems that people have are because Windows etc. runs on almost an unlimited variety of hardware. It is almost a miracle that their operating systems work as well as they do with this huge variety of hardware. And yes, I say this as someone who has years of experience installing and running various versions of Linux as well.
