Wrong... No it is not. All those are absolutely not true.

I posted a minor correction to TexasGator’s post #55. But the basic point that he was making was that Ubuntu is not as easy to use or as compatible with other programs, apps and games as Windows is absolutely true. No amount of consternation is likely to change this in the near future.

If one is familiar with Ubuntu and knows a little more than the basics it is pretty amazing what can be done with it. I prefer installing Ubuntu Studio myself because it comes with an incredible suite of multi-media tools already installed. And yes, if you use it with games that you purchased with Steam most of them work surprisingly well depending on your hardware.

But for at least the near future... Microsoft will continue to dominate the scene. That is because they have $Billions of dollars invested and huge numbers of well-paid workers keeping their products ahead of the game. Do I like the policies of the company when it comes to politics and world affairs? Obviously not! But I also continue to purchase products from Amazon and Costco, and my landlines are all “free Google phones”. These companies have made it to the top because they offer convenience and value.

Ubuntu is amazing, but all of the computers that I have set up for my parents who are in their 80s are using Windows. And they have plenty of difficulties with them. Fortunately, my siblings and their kids can usually get them through whatever challenges that they are having. Ubuntu simply would not fly in their situation.

PCs older than fifteen years will be affected by this change and won't be able to boot Windows 11 without POPCNT support.

Bummer.

I've had to do System Restore on the last three updates to my box, because Microsoft seems to think that it's THEIR box.

Well, the mind of the PC is. We only bought a license to use it. The day may come when EV's are bought under a subscription plan. All use is recorded and factors into your rate.

What is the point of paying all the time for Microsoft 365? My guess is because it is cloud based and can be used by you on all your so called “devices”. Just so long as that device is signed in to yr Microsoft account.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/lifestyle/shopping/you-can-get-lifetime-of-microsoft-office-pro-for-less-than-30-if-you-act-fast/ar-BB1ijszi —— A very good deal. I would get this too.
But I have Office 2010 and it is good enough

I love all the people who heckle Windows threads who believe that they are somehow “special” after they were able to figure out how to install some form of Linux on a computer.

People who rely on Apple products are on the opposite end of the spectrum. They usually do not have a desire to get into the nuts and bolts of an operating system and just want to get their work done. For some reason they typically do not feel the need to heckle those of us who use various versions of Windows.

There seems to be something about Linux that causes those who have sworn off Windows to post one liners that are found amusing only by other Linux users. I have no idea what it is. I have been using Linux and Windows for decades and I appreciate what both have to offer.

There various ways to get Microsoft products for much less than the normal retail price. Some of them are scams, some of them are in a “gray area”, and some are completely legit. The same is true for other software products.

It depends on what you are comfortable with. And it is important to use due diligence whenever you seem to be getting a product for a lot less than what you would normally pay. Earlier I mentioned a software product that I use and purchase the latest version every year, partially to support the developer. Every year I get the latest version’s “permanent license” for over 80% less than the retail price... directly from the developer and it is totally legit.

Recently I purchased a Flight Simulator program for far less than the normal retail price through Kinguin. It involved buying a “Steam Account” that the seller had set up. Once logged into the Steam Account I could see that the game had been purchased at a large discount directly from Steam. I then changed the username, password and the other log in details.

Kinguin facilitates this type of transaction but is not the actual seller. I have seen various theories on how this actually works. A lot of people speculate that this is not a legitimate way to get the software. The seller has approximately 2.5 million satisfied customers and has been in business for years according to their Kinguin feedback profile. And part of the price that is paid is used for “insurance” in case you do get scammed. I assume that this is in some type of gray area. It did not seem all that risky and everything has been working fine.

I have purchased other software from retailers such as Humblebundle.com at heavy discounts and never have had any problems. They seem completely legit.

Of course, there are other providers of various software keys. Some seem legit, others obviously are not.

I never buy Apple anything. I don't like the way these clowns roll. Such as when they messed around with Georgia over some trans or gay thing.
Here are my Microsoft positives:

----Windows 11 works for me. This may be bloated compared to Linux. But todays CPUs amd RAM can easily deal with bloat and are inexpensive.
----Bing search works for me. Using it for the last five years. Google search was too manipulated
--- Bing AI search can be very helpful and fun to get insta-results. Though politics and Covid19 are slanted (programmed) to tilt left
---- Their Edge browser works very well. But has so many features, that it might be slower than others.

----Due to constant AI buzz and propaganda >>> Microsoft's market cap is larger than Apple's

There’s about to be a new king of the stock-market jungle.

Microsoft Corp. is set to become the most highly valued U.S. company ever, surpassing the record market capitalization set by long-time leader Apple Inc.

Microsoft’s stock has been on a roll this year, as it has ridden the artificial-intelligence and cloud-computing wave. In contrast, Apple shares have lost ground, as the iPhone maker’s reliance on consumers, which has been struggling, has led them to underperform their technology-giant rivals.

On Friday, Microsoft’s stock rallied 1.3% in afternoon trading to lift the company’s market capitalization to $3.12 trillion. That puts it on pace to surpass the current all-time market-cap high of $3.09 set when the stock closed on July 31, 2023, according to Dow Jones Market Data.

As long as Microsoft’s stock closes up at least 0.4%, or at any price above $415.84, the market cap will break Apple’s record, according to Dow Jones Market Data.

Microsoft is set to be the first U.S. company with a market cap above $3.1 trillion, just two weeks after the market cap surpassed $3 trillion for the first time.

Meanwhile, Apple’s stock edged up 0.5% on Friday, for a market cap of $2.92 trillion.

Microsoft’s stock has rallied 11.6% year to date while Apple shares have lost 1.8%. In comparison, the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 Index has gained 6.7% this year and the Dow Jones Industrial Average has increased 2.6%.

Let’s cover his points and I will show why he is wrong.

“Ubuntu is harder to use.”

Not true. I have used Ubuntu but prefer to use Mint which is simply Ubuntu with a few minor tweaks. It is full GUI point and click drag and drop windows style interface and just as easy to use as windows 7 with almost all the menus, file system, with standard basic features being the same but with additional productive options.

“Requires using command line.”

Not true. The average user can use Ubuntu or Mint and never need the command line at all unless you are doing something technical such as building your own local VPN server and client which the average user will not be doing. Or building something very custom. Or downloading a 3rd party program that only has download instructions for back when Linux WAS primarily command line. But now even almost all of those have been packed up in an installer file download. It is not honest or true at all to try and discourage folks from trying it by painting Linux as a “DOS like command line only” OS. NOT ANYMORE at all, one will never need the command line interface for average normal use.

Won’t run a lot of popular programs and games.

This is not the fault of Linux and will naturally be corrected if MORE folks dumped MS and used Linux. Build a demand and they will come. There are only a very limited number of important programs that are not compatible and this is because the developers refuse to port them to Linux. They have made crooked deals with MS to not port them to Linux.

Replacements for these are available for Linux but no one wants to make time and effort to adapt to them or use other alternatives. They are lazy. And what issues these replacements might have are only still present because of lack of demand or developers would take the time to fix them.

Games... As you say, there are games just as technical and as good as MS games available from steam ported for Linux. But users have THAT ONE GAME they just cannot live without to be rid of MS. They would instead allow themselves to be perpetually abused by MS rather than adopt a similar competitive game ported for Linux. This is the fault of their OWN addiction not Linux.

“Won’t run Android apps.”

Not true. There is Anbox, Genymotion, or Waydroid apps for Linux.

And there is no reason why one can’t have BOTH Linux and MS in the same machine to cure these very limited application issues. Files in a MS volume can even be accessed and manipulated drag and drop/copy and paste to Linux volumes when booted up in Linux.

“I prefer installing Ubuntu Studio myself because it comes with an incredible suite of multi-media tools already installed.”

This is why I use Mint “Cinnamon” version. It comes boxed with about all apps and tools you will ever need in a suite. And it has all kinds of Gnome type graphics customization options. And of course it comes with direct access to the Ubuntu software repository with one click application installs using the software manager or synaptic.

Let me make it simpler. It is not fair at all to represent and paint Linux as this:

When it is actually this:

I am calling foul and getting real tired of this deceptive impression these MS folks are using to paint Linux...

I don’t have a problem with the various forms of Linux. I think that many are absolutely amazing. But as to whether they are as easy to use as Windows depends partially on the hardware you are using, the Linux version, and what you are trying to accomplish.

Linux users make up less than 4% of the desktop and laptop market according to Wikipedia and other sources. It is possible to install Linux on iPads and some tablets and phones. I love a technical challenge and have ventured into this area on occasion.

One of the issues is that for most laptops and desktops the manufacturers and software developers consider Linux to be a niche market. So the drivers especially are often not as well developed. I am going to go off on a little bit of a tangent here, but touchpads provide a fairly good example.

I am finicky about touchpads, but with a laptop you are basically just stuck with the one that comes with it. Tapping, scrolling, zooming and multi-finger operations can become a complete nightmare with a bad driver. Of course, the absolute worst drivers come with Bluetooth keyboard/touchpad combos but that is another story.

On my laptops with Windows 10 and 11, usually just the stock drivers work very well and are a pleasure to use. But I never have found a touchpad driver for Linux that really makes me happy. And I am not even referring to tapping, scrolling, zooming and multi-finger operations. Just moving the pointer around the screen typically doesn’t work as well.

If you turn the sensitivity up to the point where it is easy to get the pointer precisely over what you want to select or click on then you have to reposition your finger multiple times to get it across the screen. And holding one finger on the touchpad so that you can scroll or select text often causes the screen to be inadvertently zoomed in and out. Using better techniques such as two finger scrolling can help, but not when you are selecting text or using a photo editing program.

Somehow these very basic controls are difficult enough in my Linux setups that it is typically far easier to use a mouse which is not always convenient... Sometimes this is not much of an issue depending on the hardware or the Linux build. But most of the time it is. And that is a mundane difference that is a little difficult to explain but can make a huge difference in the user’s experience.

This is the type of thing that gives one the feeling that Linux is not as refined as Windows. I have been using computers since long before graphical interfaces became the rage; using a command line does not really bother me. But a bad touchpad driver can cause a lot of frustration depending on what you are trying to accomplish.
