Your PC without this CPU feature won’t boot Windows 11 24H2
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Windows 11 24H2 update requires the POPCNT CPU feature, making it impossible to run on super-old PCs.
Modern CPUs support POPCNT, so if you recently bought a new PC, you won't have any issues.
PCs older than fifteen years will be affected by this change and won't be able to boot Windows 11 without POPCNT support.
Windows 11 24H2 is the next big update that Microsoft will roll out later this year, and it might finally put an end to the practice of running Windows unofficially on super old PCs. The software giant seems to be in the process of updating the minimum hardware requirements, making the POPCNT (stands for Population Count) CPU feature required to be able to boot Windows 11 24H2.
All the best modern CPUs support POPCNT, so if you recently bought a new PC, it won't come in the way of booting the next version of Windows. Instead, people who are still running PCs that are more than fifteen years old will be affected by this change. Why fifteen years, you ask? Well, the POPCNT instruction was first introduced by Intel on Nehalem-based Core i7 processors, released way back in 2008. If you've PCs older than that, you're out of luck.
Bob Pony's post on the X platform indicates that Microsoft quietly made POPCNT a requirement to run Windows 11 last year. The change first arrived with Windows 11 Insider Preview build 25905, which consists of various system files requiring CPUs that are capable of executing POPCNT instructions. For example, USB XHCI drivers, which are responsible for managing USB 3.0 and later, now utilize the functionalities of the said instruction.

“Yep, I’ve been gradually converting all my Excel records to Apple Numbers records. It’s particularly annoying that Microsoft is trying to force you onto software SUBSCRIPTION programs. I loved Excel but not enough to be chained to Microsoft subscriptions.”
You can buy Office Professional 2021.
I have never used Numbers but I don’t find a reference to being able to write programs/functions. Excel has full programming using VBA.
“Finally a version of windows that doesn’t open.”
Why are you on this thread with false posts?
I’m running Kubuntu on a Dell Optiplex 7060 microtower that I bought dirt cheap. I love it!
ROFL! U missed what he did there, hahahahaha!
I provided the missing letter, off hand, I'd say you simply missed my joke...
Because it annoys you.
Do you happen to know what a window that is designed to not open is called?
It’s a picture window.
IFor home needs, I can do more, and do it faster, on my iPad than my old PC’s.
My brand new work PC is fast enough for what it is called to do, but windows is so busy trying to be useful is seems bloated and slower than it should.
Not most any more...
Apple is just like Microsoft..except it is hardware.
“Because it annoys you.”
Nothing here annoys me but I enjoy living rent free in your head.
“Ubuntu will work. Easy peasy. Most PC and laptops will run way better on Ubuntu since it doesn’t come with all the bloatware Windows does.”
Ubuntu is more difficult to run. Requires using command line.
Won’t run a lot of popular programs and games.
Won’t run Android apps.
Mint21 runs fine on older PCs, even matching the speed of newer chip PCs.
iPads are great for home use but for real work they are a no go.
I have a Compaq CQ57-339WM that I am typing on.
I think I bought it in 2013.
The CD/DVD drive is temperamental but otherwise the hardware is fine.
I don’t think I can upgrade the processor for Windows 11.
an you expand more on that?
Use VirtualBox 7.0
Linux (Mint) host...
Pick one or more guest VM’s including up to Win11
Even better use KVM/QEMU
