Gunfire on I-59 in Birmingham (Alabama) leaves at least 4 wounded

Birmingham police are responding to a report of several people shot, including at least two on Interstate 59/20.

Multiple calls started coming into Birmingham’s 911 center about 4:40 p.m. The initial call was of masked men firing into occupied vehicles.

One of the callers said a person was on the ground outside of a vehicle with a gunshot wound, according to police radio traffic...

I used to drive near there a lot. West side of Birmingham. Originally it was working class.

Over the years the area got worse and worse.

Now I avoid that area. It’s really depressing.

I20/59 in Ensley? those wacky youths are probably involved. this is why I keep a gun handy on my daily commute. This is also not new. Had some youths shooting an AK at random cars on I 20 a few years ago.

That area was always a no go for me. I was in school in Birmingham in the late 70s.

What’s frustrating is they will count this in their total of red state mass shootings even though it’s in a blue area. The stats only are collected at the state level.

Back in the day Ensley was known as Little Italy. There was a large Italian community there. By the 1970’s people were moving out in mass. Housing was cheap. The cheap houses surrounded a huge housing project. Now the community is over 90% black. They have torn down part of the housing project and built some sort of section 8 HUD housing. It has a higher then average crime rate which skews the overall average of the city of Birmingham.
