When most people think of the so-called “superfoods” recommended for healthy living, something out of a can doesn’t generally come to mind.

But one expert says there’s a shelf-stable supermarket staple that’s an essential part of every balanced diet — and most of us aren’t eating enough of it. Cans of fatty fish — including sardines, mackerel and anchovies — provide a big boost to brain health, due to high levels of omega-3, Dr. Michael Moseley told the Daily Mail.

“Omega-3 is an essential fatty acid, which means it is vital for our health but, unfortunately, your body can’t produce it, so the only way to get enough of it is through your diet,” Moseley said. He added, “Among other things, it keeps your brain cells healthy and talking to each other.”

Anchovies disgust me ... that’s the only answer I can give regarding anchovies.

I don’t know how long sardines packed in oil last ... I’ve never had them around long enough to go bad. I could reserve a few cans for experimentation and get back to you in a few years. Or decades ...

Just so everyone is clear "superfoods" is a marketing term to sell stuff. Fatty fish, acai berries, quinoa, whatever. It's a marketing word to get you to buy it.

That said, fatty fish is good for you. Smoked herring, also known as kippers, is delicious!

According to the article, ‘Flaxseed, chia seeds, walnuts, olives and eggs are other known sources of omega-3’

Other articles indicate kidney beans, black beans and
pumpkins. It would be interesting to know about organ meats, but I haven’t found that yet...

I have no claim to be an expert on mercury levels in fish, but I want to share what I have read on the subject.

The bigger the fish, the more mercury there is, since these bigger fish are at the top of the food chain in the ocean.

Smaller fish, like sardines, are much lower on the food chain, an d have fat less mercury, and are excellent sources of the desired omega 3s. Eat 1 or 2 tins a week, and you are good to go.

Check it out for yourself to check the accuracy of my information.

Up until Covid, walmart carried bumblebee smoked trout for less than $2.00 a tin...it was very good with just a little salt or a light spread of honey mustard. It was a regular staple of my diet and I ate a ton of it. Since Covid the price has more than doubled and I refuse to play what they’re asking now.

I eat canned salmon at least once every week. It too, is a ‘fatty’ fish. In addition, since the CCP-Coronavirus scare, I take zinc, vitamins B-12, C, and D, omega-3, and a number of other supplements.

I live in what is euphemistically called ‘shared accommodation’. The latest version of the CCP-Coronavirus, ran through the house over the last several weeks. I did not get it or, if I did, I didn’t even notice any symptoms. I never took any of the ‘shots’ but eventually, did get the ‘Omni-chron’ variant (as PedoJoe called it) about 18 months ago. That I didn’t get it this time, I put to immunity T-cells that are long lasting. The supplements that I take have also helped to fend off other colds and flush.

Over all though, I thank Yeshua Mashiach, who protects me and will keep me breathing until the time of His choosing, as with all of us.

I agree with you, and while I have learned to eat my sardines directly from the can with a little lemon juice or ACV, there is recipe I make for my daughter who is totally turned off by the appearance of the sardines in their tidy little can.

I doctor this recipe up according to our own preferences, and you can do it too, after trying the basic one out first.

I buy frozen pizza...and add a tin of anchovies. Looks kinda nice, too. Then I use the oil for my salad.
