Oregon ends ban on self-service gas pumps after 72 years: Confused motorists turn to 'how-to' guides and station attendants' union slams the change as 'blatant cash grab'

Motorists in Oregon are expressing excitement and confusion after a 72-year ban on self-serve gasoline pumps was lifted on Friday.

Across the Beaver State, drivers took to social media to boast of pumping their own gas, while local new outlets published step-by-step instructions to help bewildered first-timers.

The change came after Governor Tina Kotek signed a bill allowing people across the state to choose between having an attendant pump gas or doing it themselves. The law took immediate effect.

That leaves New Jersey as the only US state that prohibits motorists from pumping their own gas. A few countries also ban it, including South Africa, where attendants offer to check fluid levels and clean the windshield, and expect to be tipped.

'Today was day one where we were allowed to pump our own gas, I was super excited to go and do this myself,' said TikTok user @pnw.bethany in a video on Friday.

However, she was disappointed to discover that she had accidentally pulled into a 'full service' lane at the gas station, where attendants still do the pumping, and vowed to return to the 'self-service' lane for the next fill-up.

Oregon residents were divided on the change, with some expressing support, and others skepticism.

'It's about time. It's long overdue,' said Karen Cooper, who lives in Salem, said shortly before the bill was signed.

'I've spent a lot of time in California,' Cooper said. 'I know how to pump my own. Everybody should know how to pump their own gas.'

Kacy Willson, 32, who has lived in Oregon her whole life, said she doesn't have much interest in pumping her own gas. She's only tried it a few times in her life.

“Oregon ends ban on self-service gas pumps after 72 years”

Wow, that’s inconceivable to me. I was pumping gas before I could drive.

Even where you can’t pump your own gas, are you actually getting anything that resembles “full service”? I remember what that was, even worked as an attendant, but got used to do it yourself many years ago.

I was able to pump my own gas and mow lawns back in the 1970s and made a profit. Crazy dayz.

Sounds like a prime candidate for a Tesla. She will never have to pump gas again

I thought Oregon was supposed to be “progressive” and they’re just now getting rid of filling station attendants?

When the rain is coming in sideways, it’s a bad idea to pump gas. Even a little H2O in the gas tank is a quite bad thing.

I stopped in jersey got out and tried to pump. Got told to get back in the car. I had to wait for the attendant to pump. It took way longer than doing it myself. I was pissed. I can’t believe people from jersey put up with that crap.

If you’re an attendant pumping thousands of gallons a week, benzene exposure becomes an issue. If you pump 20 gallons a week, not so much.

“Yep. In 2007, by sheer habit, I got out of the car to pump gas off of I-5 south of Portland, and the attendant was trying to do it for me. Then I realized that the nanny state was present”

Yep same thing happened to me in Oregon around 1995 after flying into Portland and renting a car. The gas attendant came running out taking the pump out of my hand and giving me the low down on how things work in Oregon. Whatever.

What’s the difference between Jersey girls and garbage?

Garbage gets picked up.

The attendants often smoked while pumping gas into my car in the 1970s.
In the 2960s attendants always pumped the gss, wiped the windshield, and checked the oil AND gad was 16 to 27 CENTS a gallon.

aaahhh!! so now it makes sense.

Oregon has a gas station union. It has taken a progressive state 30 years to progress beyond gas pumping union trash

I guess the Portland tent dwellers are safe for twenty more years.

I had a similar experience of seeing an attendant run out, but they were yelling at me.

When I relocated for work to the PNW, I had to get out of the car anyway to use the gas card at the pump and enter mileage, etc..

So, I stood out there with the attendant most times..
But it’s a little ridiculous having to wait for an attendant at a busy station to get back to your car when the pump has done its business and filled you up, and you want to get on your way..

But when in Portlandia...
