Oregon ends ban on self-service gas pumps after 72 years: Confused motorists turn to 'how-to' guides and station attendants' union slams the change as 'blatant cash grab'

Motorists in Oregon are expressing excitement and confusion after a 72-year ban on self-serve gasoline pumps was lifted on Friday.

Across the Beaver State, drivers took to social media to boast of pumping their own gas, while local new outlets published step-by-step instructions to help bewildered first-timers.

The change came after Governor Tina Kotek signed a bill allowing people across the state to choose between having an attendant pump gas or doing it themselves. The law took immediate effect.

That leaves New Jersey as the only US state that prohibits motorists from pumping their own gas. A few countries also ban it, including South Africa, where attendants offer to check fluid levels and clean the windshield, and expect to be tipped.

'Today was day one where we were allowed to pump our own gas, I was super excited to go and do this myself,' said TikTok user @pnw.bethany in a video on Friday.

However, she was disappointed to discover that she had accidentally pulled into a 'full service' lane at the gas station, where attendants still do the pumping, and vowed to return to the 'self-service' lane for the next fill-up.

Oregon residents were divided on the change, with some expressing support, and others skepticism.

'It's about time. It's long overdue,' said Karen Cooper, who lives in Salem, said shortly before the bill was signed.

'I've spent a lot of time in California,' Cooper said. 'I know how to pump my own. Everybody should know how to pump their own gas.'

Kacy Willson, 32, who has lived in Oregon her whole life, said she doesn't have much interest in pumping her own gas. She's only tried it a few times in her life.

Self reliance is why we make our own gasoline.

...now I’ve got to get out of my car to fuel my vehicle with NO BENEFIT WHATSOEVER...

I go out of my way to avoid NJ gas stations. Don't want perfect strangers touchin' my stuff.

Portland, maybe. The roads elsewhere argue against invading.

There’s going to be a lot of frustration as Oregonians try and figure out which way to turn that gas cap.

When the rain is coming in sideways, nobody wants to pump gas.

The chicoms will invade there first.

Would a Chinese invasion get rid of the liberals?

Because right now you can shake a Douglas Fir and 40 white progressive idiots will fall out.

It’s the womenfolk. They don’t like the smell of gasoline all up in theah haiah. Plus they might chip their (expensive to maintain) nails.

TONS of amazing things in NJ. Pumping my own gas will be done elsewhere.

Gas prices in Oregon will now decline by 1 cent a gallon, but if you want full service it will now cost 20 cents a gallon extra.

Spent a lot of time on motorcycles in Oregon. They always let you pump your own gas if you are on a motorcycle, but you had to give them your credit card and let them put it into the pump.....lol! Crazy man, I’m glad they are allowing self-serve now for everybody.

Back in the day, the Jersey Girls collectively sent new New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine runnin’ home to mama, never to try to end the Full Service gasoline law again. It was funny to see how thoroughly they embarrassed him. He didn’t know New Jersey very well by that point, as it turned out. He had spent the previous 20-25 years living it up on Wall Street as an officer of Goldman Sachs.

IIRC Clifton, New Jersey was the High Hair capital of the United States.

All the true Hairspray Artisans must have flocked here to try to outcompete each other.

As a California vassal state, I don’t think there is enough mental capacity for native motorists to pump their own gas. They will be pumping gas into their EVs, their engines, and on the ground. Not safe at all. Side with the union here.

The chicoms will invade there first.

I'm increasingly of the opinion that we should just cede the entire West Coast to the ChiComs. They're already buying up all the property. They certainly couldn't do a worse job managing it than current leaders are doing.

On the plus side, Antifa and BLM are really going to love Chinese policing!

In 1979, I was working eight blocks from a gas station in Salem, Oregon. A women getting her car filled, decided to drive away before they pulled the gas filler from her car. We would see the flames and smoke from our office. That incident kept self service dead for many years.
