FILE - A biker stops to look at a pile of e-bikes in the aftermath of a fire in Chinatown, which authorities say started at an e-bike shop and spread to upper-floor apartments, Tuesday June 20, 2023, in New York. Federal officials are looking into cracking down on defective lithium-ion batteries that power hoverboards, scooters and motorized bicycles because of a rash of deadly fires caused by exploding batteries. The effort comes as New York City implements new laws meant to reduce the number of fires, injuries and deaths in a city where e-bikes have become ubiquitous.
NEW YORK (AP) — The explosion early on a June morning ignited a blaze that engulfed a New York City shop filled with motorized bicycles and their volatile lithium-ion batteries. Billowing smoke quickly killed four people asleep in apartments above the burning store.
As the ubiquity of e-bikes has grown, so has the frequency of fires and deaths blamed on the batteries that power them — sparking a push to better regulate how the batteries are manufactured, sold, reconditioned, charged and stored.
Consumer advocates and fire departments, particularly in New York City, are urging the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to establish national safety standards and confiscate imports that don't comply with regulations at the border, so unsafe e-bikes and poorly manufactured batteries can be taken off the streets and out of homes.

It’s time e-bikes are formally known as f-bikes. Science.
How long before the insurance companies cancel policies for anyone owning a lithium powered anything?
“..How long before the insurance companies cancel policies for anyone owning a lithium powered anything?...”
After a few big claims/payouts, it won’t take long.
They’ll probably eventually deny any claim that is the result of a battery-powered anything.
But those batteries are going to save the planet, aren’t they?
What’s a few lives lost but collaterol damage?
Chinese lithium-ion?
Lithium-ion batteries are ubiquitous. It might be a good thing if smartphones started exploding the way bicycle batteries seem to; we could then have a safety standard that phones have to shut down automatically after five minutes, and young people might suddenly realize that they aren’t really AI-guided pixels in a big simulation. Here and there, we hear about an occasional car battery acting out, but not many. Military and large commercial applications? Probably a few, but not enough to register, at least with me. So what’s up with e-bike batteries? Is there a particular problem in the supply chain for that one category of battery?
The problem is with the Chinese manufacturers of these e-bikes and their lithium ion batteries. The Consumer Products Safety Administration instead of going after our gas stoves and water heaters, should be developing strict standards for these batteries and ban the importation of anything with batteries not meeting the standards.
Concur!
I would suppose.
Yeah, right, mm.
Concur, FRiend.
Safe communist chinese batteries.....
And I read somewhere that the Biden admin made some sort of agreement with China to buy all such batteries from them.
Article didn’t address etiology of the problem.
