From Mental Disorders to Identities Exhibiting Pride

The emergence of LGBTQ Pride Month began for me with the 1973 decision by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) to remove homosexuality as a mental disorder from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM). Removal followed a two-year campaign Newsweek described as ongoing disruptive, chaotic attacks on psychiatrists and physiologists. Yet throughout these disruptive attacks, no academic papers appeared at conferences refuting research previously done. Eventually onslaughts forced sufficient abstentions, under-votes, and apprehensive responses for a third of APA’s 17,000 plus membership to accumulate enough votes to approve removal.

Approval resulted from Psychology and Psychiatry having a tenuous hold on claims they were sciences with the standing of Chemistry and Physics. On the scale of intellectual rigor, their research more often resembled alchemy and/or anecdotal oral history, and seldom, if ever, approached through statistics the determinism found in a Chemistry laboratory.

Developments in statistics should have enabled them to at least determine whether there were marginal or significant attributes defining to a particular disorder. Careful studies could have identified and graded methods of treatment. Given persistence in searching for correct methods of analysis, even accumulated episodic events could have been sifted for transformation into valid information. Research would have proceeded more slowly, and conclusions would have been less intuitive, but more stable. The disciplines would more often have adhered to the medical principle of “first of all, do no harm”. Responsible research should also have acknowledged those pesky humans, who in spite of their genetics and upbringing, decided to live positive lives without APA professional help. Overall, both professions have suffered from not demanding mathematical rigor when a position they held was assailed.

Instead, Psychology and Psychiatry have chosen to abandon pretenses of scientific method in exchange for popular societal and political acclaim. The barriers erected to meaningful research about homosexuality remind me of Genesis 3:23-24, where the Lord God banished humanity from the Garden of Eden and placed an angel in the Garden to keep humanity away forever. By their actions, Psychology and Psychiatry appear content within their own Garden of Eden. They seem to consider the accoutrements of a religion to be more attractive than those of a science. The under-voting and public attacks support the understanding that the DSM would no longer be a serious scientific document.

After this decision, activists, behaving as cherubim with flaming swords, targeted leading individual researchers such as Dr. David Reuben, and Masters and Johnson to ensure perpetual sanctity for the APA action. No research papers would again arise to confirm initial therapy success rates of 30% to 60 %, substantiating that over 7 of 10 homosexuals could eventually walk away from the lifestyle. The success rate was even higher if one included those individuals who found contentment by pursuing abstinence. Persistent activism over the years enabled ubiquitous infiltration of academia thereby ensuring to all of LGBTQ would benefit from pre-qualified peer reviewers, pre-ordained theses, approved flexibility in research designs, suitable human data points, and enchanting statistical enhancements. Jordan Peterson in his piece titled “It’s Ideology vs. Science in Psychology’s War on Boys and Men” provides a good example of these now celebrated entertainments.

My specific interest in this subject originated with taking elective 500-level statistics courses for my MBA in Finance at the University of Oregon after serving in the Navy through 1972. There I encountered a psychology professor who was incensed about the direction his concentration in abnormal psychology was moving. He was into the rigorous application of statistics for any doctoral committees on which he served, so he strongly opposed this recent decision of his association. His students sought out Quantitative Methods majors from the Business School for help in designing theses meeting his standards.

Through his frustration, I understood Psychology and Psychiatry had chosen to relinquish attempts at scientific rigor. With studies concerning homosexuality freed from objective analysis, advocates for a new definition of social justice relied upon base antidotal politics to dominate debates. The DSM became a refuge for drug marketing brochures and political manifestos. He became a pariah within his profession. Often now he would be considered a criminal.

For me the next signpost along the way was elimination of the military as a meritocracy; a meritocracy often demanding the most rigorous and brutal mindset. Bill Clinton’s proposal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell (DADT) was one of the last obstacles to demanding LGBQT status be considered a superior personal identity.

I have been a member of the U.S. Naval Institute (USNI) since 1984. From December 1992 through April 1993 the Proceedings magazine published a dozen articles and letters discussing gays in the military as DADT was being considered. The USNI prides itself as the ‘independent forum of the sea services”, however regarding the issue of repealing Section 654 of Title 10 of the U.S. Code, also known as DADT, there seemed little evidence of the intellectual scholarship USNI applied to other issues. By the time of repeal in September 2011, there were only three letters contesting articles that relied upon traditional, popular emotional appeals without any of the great volume of evidence available. Obama was well into his purge of high-ranking officers, so intimidation would have occurred throughout the Pentagon and the Army War College, as well as what I observed at the USNI.

Political ideology fueled by arrogance and reinforced by premeditated ignorance relied for cover on the DOD deceptive proclamation that 70% of service members saw positive or no effect for repealing DADT. The poll was conducted after Congressional Representatives had voted for repeal of DADT. Therefore, only 29% of the population selected responded by completing half or more of the questions, under the compelling logic that nobody really cared. DOD contacted equal numbers of reserve and active troops and spouses, but only 20% to 30% were families of service members whose military specialty could place them in harm’s way. Also, nearly one third had never deployed. Supposedly all these responses provided valid information, even though people in base housing, civilian neighborhoods, and CONUS bureaucracies never experience firefights and IED’s. Notice the links I have given are dead in most cases. DOD is clearly happy with the situation of people not being able to delve into the facts behind the decision.

However, the entire military exists to serve Marine, Army, and Special Forces units at the pointy end of the spear. Sexual aberrations cannot intrude into those units or even those holding the spear. DOD accomplishes nothing of lasting significance until these people walk the ground formerly held by an enemy, and well over half of those trigger-pullers opposed repeal. Only they understand the unimaginable totalitarian leadership and obedience demanded by their chaotic, barbaric, traumatic, and brittle environments. Combat forms personnel into rigid, task-oriented units. They then descend into a squalid cacophony of shrieking, cursing, sobbing, crashing dissonance to orchestrate the killing of other humans under a discipline which should not allow for neither hate nor joy. These people continuously face extraordinary mental and physical stress and survive by acquiring the wisdom of wild animals that live in the moment without conveniences for eating, sleeping, resting, or other bodily functions. At the point of collision, they undertake operations requiring sacrificial, primitive, and intimate actions. They must display a noble fidelity to each other despite these environments. The leadership and discipline of a sub-culture that enables victory or at least survival cannot be turned on and off. It must continually penetrate not only these units, but throughout the military assigned to serve them.

Politicians ignored collision with the enemy when making the Armed Forces into playthings for Pentagon bureaucrats whose covens are committed to Social Marxist definitions of equal opportunity and affirmative action. Writers at the time prophesied, the fundamental issues for the military to resolve after DADT repeal would be how to embrace gays and lesbians, bisexuals, chaste pedophiles, men who feel "trapped" in female bodies, women who feel "trapped" in male bodies, men who sometimes feel like a man and sometimes prefer living and dressing like women, women who sometimes feel like women and sometimes prefer dressing and living like men. Issues related to operations would become secondary.

What emerges now is a world in which the APA says nearly all sexual interests and actions are normal and the DOD says these individuals are welcome to serve in the most rigorous, traumatic, and lethal environments one can contemplate. In 50 years, sexual disorders that people had to contend against have been transformed into personal identities that one should celebrate. It seems to me not much else was needed to complete the fraud.

Note the number of “missing” that vary from question to question. Anyone think that the people taking the survey wanted to be on record on some of these questions? Also, on page 62 of the 64 page appendices is the fact that 34.4% were from the warfare community and 65.5% were from the non warfare community. Not quite a 2 to 1 ratio between non combat troops and combat troops.

A lot of prose here that doesn’t address the glaring red flag that these people are VOTING on whether something is insane or not. No real Science votes on anything.

Other disorders voted on:
Drinks too much coffee.
Can’t do math.
Disagrees with the shrink’s diagnosis ( this is my favorite).

Or maybe it is we who are under the influence of Satan by allowing all this to happen without a whimper.

We’ve had the numbers and the means to stop it but lacked the will. And still do.

The left has been able to use our own morals against us.

As Matthew 7:3-5 tells us we should be more concerned with our own faults over others, and in Matthew 5:39 to turn the other cheek when getting attacked by evil.

So we have significant moral barriers which make it difficult to counter what the Left is currently doing, and they cannot be stopped without the use of violence.

We as a group will have to endure much, much more before a consensus to act is reached.
