Very low carbohydrate diets can improve blood pressure, blood sugar levels and weight control (Better than DASH)

Adults with hypertension, prediabetes, or type 2 diabetes, and who are overweight or obese, are at an increased risk of serious health complications. However, experts disagree about which dietary patterns should be recommended. Researchers randomized 94 adults with the aforementioned conditions, using a 2 x 2 diet-by-support factorial design, comparing a very low-carbohydrate (VLC) or ketogenic diet versus a Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet. Additionally, they compared results with and without extra support activities, such as mindful eating, positive emotion regulation, and cooking education.

Using intent-to-treat analyses, the VLC diet led to greater improvement in estimated mean systolic blood pressure (SBP; –9.8 mmHg vs. –5.2 mmHg, P =.046), greater improvement in glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c; –.4 % vs. –.1 %, P = 0.034), and greater improvement in weight (–19.14 lbs vs. –10.33 lbs, P = 0.0003), compared to the DASH diet. The addition of extra support did not have a statistically significant effect on outcomes.

For adults with hypertension, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, and are overweight or obese, a VLC diet demonstrated greater improvements in systolic blood pressure, glycemic control, and weight over a four-month period compared to a DASH diet.

Nearly half (47%) of adults in the US have hypertension and about half have prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. Approximately 42% of adults in the United States are also obese. These conditions can trigger stroke, end-stage renal disease, myocardial infarction and premature death. While first-line treatment for these individuals should be a diet and lifestyle intervention, experts disagree about which diet should be recommended.

For adults who are overweight or obese, have hypertension, as well as prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, a very low carbohydrate diet demonstrated greater improvements in systolic blood pressure, glycemic control, and weight over a four-month period compared to a DASH diet.

There was quite a bit of difference between the two diets.

Regardless, we all need to get healthier. Choose a healthy diet and reduce your weight.

Only took 15 years for the medical community to concede that their idiot patients were right all along...

Brain Health and body health in one simple eating plan.

The MIND diet, which combines the DASH and Mediterranean diets, was explicitly designed to reduce the risk of age-related dementia.

The antioxidants and vitamin E in berries, olive oil, leafy green vegetables and nuts help ward off damaging oxidative stress.

At the same time, the omega-3 fatty acids in fish decrease harmful inflammation in the brain.

The DASH diet has been shown to reduce the chance of developing metabolic unhealthy obesity, a condition tied to an increased risk of dementia. (5).

I’m an Ophthalmologist who early in my career specialized in diabetic eye disease and saw horrible things pre-A1C.

Now closer to retirement I’m more an Optometrist but when I inform my diabetic patients about things that can happen to them if they don’t get their sugar under control, they’re shocked.

Either their docs aren’t talking about it or it goes in one of their ears and out the other.

Gonna start giving these people flyers on the DASH and VLC diets.

Thanks for posting this.

“I’m an Ophthalmologist who early in my career specialized in diabetic eye disease and saw horrible things pre-A1C.”

It’s still not clear to me whether it’s the blood Glucose, or the Insulin levels that are causing damage to the Retina. Hopefully the FACTS about this comes out, at some point.

I believe it is strictly the excess glucose.

Insulin just loses its ability to shunt blood sugar into muscles and fat cells, to achieve a healthy level of glucose.

Probably 30-50 net carbs, for Very Low, but I didn't dig into the paper.

Keto is sometimes considered < 30 grams, but can edge up a bit, as long as you stay in ketosis.

Did you observe correlations between blood glucose / prediabetes and ARMD?

Spent decades watching diabetics with A1C’s in the 5’s NEVER developing eye disease.

It’s almost like a cancer but you can control it’s outcome.

Went through it when was pregnant with my kids. Behaving pays off big time.
