A lost climber who endured a night in an open bivy at 11,600 feet on the Whitney Glacier in California was saved in a 12-hour "mega-rescue," according to the Mount Shasta Avalanche Center and Home of the Climbing Rangers.
Heightened by the weekend weather, the nonprofit organization said the incident occurred Saturday on "one of the most difficult and dangerous areas of the mountain to access."
Extremely poor visibility kept aerial resources grounded, the nonprofit said.
However, the United States Forest Service Climbing Rangers, in cooperation with Siskiyou County Search and Rescue, located the climber alive and in "remarkably good shape."
The rescue operation then safely made its was down the mountain.
Officials from the Mount Shasta Avalanche Center and Home of the Climbing Rangers urged climbers to follow these guidelines:
Despite being 15 minutes off the interstate, officials said a rescue on Mount Shasta is neither automatic or instant. The Mount Shasta Avalanche Center said even rescues that seem straightforward involve planning, effort and risk.
Ping
I seriously doubt they’ll find that actor Julian Sands alive at this point.
Bill the climber the cost of rescue.
Who is he? There's no mention in the article.
Double the costs if the climber was sporting a man bun.
Every summer in California the Search and Rescue teams are busy it appears the people go hiking are clueless about how to go about it.
It’s California Jim
Works for me
Julian Sands disappeared in Yosemite I think. David Paulides covered his story on the CanAm Missing 411. Alot of people have never been found in Yosemite.
Creepy stuff.
And, what is an “open bivy”?
My bad, he was in the San Gabriel near Mount baldy, which is another ‘cluster’ of missing people.
He was in 24 and other shows/movies.
I encourage you to check out David Paulides CanAm Missing 411 Project on yt. Freaky stuff going on.
Yeah, I agree with the above. Fine the climber the cost of the rescue. If he has long hair, double it. If he has a rainbow shirt, triple it.
We don't discuss such matters with women present.
it's a cover for the sleeping bag.
The article doesn’t mention any details. Was the hiker just a loser with a can of Coke for hydration or was he a legit outdoorsman who got messed up? Did he have his essential survival gear? Did he have a map and compass but the wind blew the map away?
Could be a lot of things.
ABSOLUTELY. I have a very hard spot in my heart for these fools, which comes from the fact that two acquaintances of mine lost their lives rescuing just such an idiot off Mount Washington in New Hampshire many years ago. Make 'em pay, or leave them there.
Regardless, if people had to pay for the ‘tow’ they would at least buy insurance, or have a healthy saving account.
Most of this climbing stuff is simply a matter of vain pride: “I did (do) this (or that)! Not just anybody can!”
I had a neighbor that became obsessed with running. It ended his marriage because running became more important than just about anything else.
Here’s one with better details. Party of four. Three took skis up to the summit. Our victim was to solo descend on crampons. Got bad weather.
Julian Sands disappeared while hiking Mount Baldy in the San Gabriel mountains, as did this woman who filmed her video before slipping down the mountain: https://nypost.com/2023/01/11/hiker-crystal-gonzalez-landas-dies-after-fall-from-icy-mountain/
I didn’t see your correction before I made my post.
