NATIONAL PIGS-IN-A-BLANKET DAY

On April 24, observe National Pigs-in-a-Blanket Day with just a few ingredients.

#PigsInABlanketDay

Celebrated across the world, the term often refers to a variety of different dishes. In the United States, Pigs-in-a-Blanket is often hot dogs or sausages wrapped in biscuit or croissant dough and baked. Pigs-in-a-Blanket are generally served as an appetizer or as breakfast. However, it can be served at any mealtime!

Another popular version of pigs-in-a-blanket includes cabbage rolls stuffed with a beef filling. It’s often covered with a tomato or cream sauce. Many recipes use the name “Pigs-in-a-Blanket” to describe just about any meat product wrapped in something. For example, one recipe we found called for stuffing a hotdog with a slice of cheese and wrapping the whole works with bacon. No dough or cabbage involved here.

And while some references give Betty Crocker credit for the first printed use of the phrase in 1957, records as early as 1901 reference recipes for pigs-in-a-blanket in a variety of forms. However, the phrase did increase in usage in the English language after it was printed in the 1957 cookbook.

In my neck of the woods, pigs in a blanket are meatballs wrapped in lefse.

I only eat lefse with cranberry sauce.

I bought some Pillsbury canned biscuits a couple weeks ago. I don’t think I’ve ever bought canned biscuits before. Popped a couple in the air fryer and, wow, did they turn out good. A bit of butter and honey — yum.

I don’t think I’ve ever eaten a “pig in a blanket.” That just does not look appetizing to me. A greasy little mini-hot dog in dough. Ugh.

And they are “Celebrated across the world”? Really? Did I miss the celebration again this year?

Do molten pigs in a blanket. Slice the dog, not all the way thru, put 2 sticks of cheddar in the slit, wrap in crescent roll dough, & bake. Eat & go to heaven 🤣😄

My son and I went to the SF Giants Baseball game yesterday. There were TWELVE hot dog vendor carts lined up in front of the stadium along King Street. That was not there the last time we went to a game. And every single one of then was selling the same sausages, fried veggies and bacon wrap. They were all being cooked fresh and looked might appetizing (not kidding — they really looked good). But to see 12 identical carts, all with identical food, all neatly lined up was something.

The food vendors were hawking their food the same way the barkers hawked the “nude dancers” at the strip joints on Broadway 50 years ago. I suppose that’s a step in cleaning up the city. ;>)

I’ve only made pigs in a blanket a time or two. Everyone seems to like hotdogs or brats on buns, and those are easier, so I just go that route.

Hmmm, my 2 year old grandson will be coming to visit for a few days in early June. Maybe I can convince his mommy and daddy to let us try them. His daddy has always loved beef frankfurters of any kind, it especially Boarshead.
