I never thought of that. I suppose the falafel could be a folding sandwich as with tortillas or gyros. Hmmm.
Lighter than most bread.

Black-eyed peas and hog jowl.....except none of the stores are selling jowl this year. You can get every other part of the pig, but no jowls.

I think that’s a Cuban Reuben. One of the substitutions is cole slaw.

In fact, I like the turkey in place of the pastrami. Don’t mind mammal meat, but turkey is less gristly to eat thru. Rather have it smooth.

The other thing is most sub 1000 Island for Russian dressing. Not terrible, but not fully accurate. I guess Russian is not common so they wing it.

I’m ok.

I despise sauerbraten.

My mother was famous for being a great cook, and sauerbraten was something she was known for. But I hated it. Made me barf. Instead of sour beef I called it sour barf.

I adore kraut.

I also like things like jaegerschnitzel.

I seldom order a Reuben in a restaurant because they’re usually not very good. One place even made what they called a Reuben with coleslaw instead of sauerkraut, if you can believe that.

I thought a Reuben with slaw was called a Rachael.

I use thousand island myself when making them at home. Never cole slaw, though, no matter what.

A Rachel is made with pastrami (some use turkey), and cole slaw. It’s good for what it is, but it’s not a Reuben, which is made with corned beef and sauerkraut.

“Don’t forget the cornbread, greens and hog jowls to go with those peas.”

That’s what we are having. Cheating a little on the greens and having brussels sprouts, but close enough to cabbage, I think.

My mother always said that tradition started in the South because if you were poor in the South and got up on New Years Day about all you would find to eat would be some dried black eyed peas, a chunk of salt pork, some cornmeal and some kind of leftover greens in the garden.

Yeah, I’m in South Alabama, right where the highlands/piney woods meet the Blackbelt.

This is the meal making method for both poor whites and/or black folk.

We only get the parts of the hog and fowl the rich don’t want. Only thing is whites won’t eat chitlins never!

Backs, jowls, wings (although everyone wants these nowadays, so the price is through the roof), hocks, and pig feet.
