Smart Tablet

Posted on 09/25/2022 7:20:11 AM PDT by Allen In Texas Hill Country

I want to keep my '08 Mazda CX-7. But it lacks one feature I would like to have. When I get into my '16 Soul and turn it on the console automatically links with my simple flip phone. Thats flip phone, not a smart phone. Smart phones are way too smart for me and unnecessarily expensive, monthly wise.

So is there a tablet I could put into the Mazda and do that same function. Pair with the phone. Then display incoming calls and and answer or deny by touching the screen? And if I answer, talk to the tablet/person?

Do a search for single din CarPlay stereos with floating screens. I think those will work for you.

Search on “single din carplay” or “carplay”? What is “single din”?

And thank you.

Good question to ask your Mazda dealer. Specifically if it is Android or iOS (upgradeable) or just Bluetooth. The reason I suggest the dealer is that there MIGHT be software/hardware upgrades that need installation before your query can be accurately answered. These are things that POSSIBLY are not automatically installed in whatever electronics that was originally installed in your Mazda when it was new. At 16 years, your 2006 is from the time of Pentium computers and car electronics were similarly stone-age.

โ€œSingle dinโ€ is the standard slot for a car stereo (before they became built in) which was the common standard in most cars circa 2000 and before. Double din is โ€œtwo slotโ€ high stereos - you started seeing them with the built in 6-CD changers and later larger screens.

DIN is a German standard for automotive accessories that fit into the dashboard. If something is DIN then it can fit into your dashboard without modifying it. You may have to remove something else to make room for the new device.

A tablet is basically a smart phone with a larger screen.

There are Sony CD player/tuners that do basically this.

I think a small eraseable white board and a sharpie eraseable pen should work just fine for you. And have your mother-in-law sit in the front passenger seat to voice- over read the screen.

Go to Crutchfield.com and plug in your vehicle year/make/model and check out the available aftermarket receivers. Pretty much all of them will Bluetooth link to your phone for hands-free talking, plus allow updated media sources for music files. Some have touchscreens, like tablets.

Our CX3 does that. I had to pair the phone via Blue tooth. Now it happens automatically.

You may notice that some receivers are no longer equipped with CD/DVD players; they are labeled as “digital multimedia” or some variation. They are generally a bit lighter and the metal case is smaller (because it doesn’t have to accommodate a CD player). Crutchfield sells wiring harness adapters and plastic bezels that allow the new receiver to fit the dashboard of your car and plug into its factory wiring. The biggest part of the job is removing the factory bezel and electronics. When you select a receiver to look at in detail, the installation accessories should be listed as add-on items. They sell sets of non-marring plastic tools to use in prying off the factory bezel, well worth the price.
