Old coins worth nearly $300,000 found under floorboards [Jolly Old England]

LONDON, UK — An English household literally uncovered a buried treasure, and they'll likely get a pretty penny for it.

During a renovation of their 18th-century home in 2019, the residents came across a salt-glazed earthenware cup stuck beneath the concrete and floorboards.

When they looked inside, they discovered more than 260 gold coins.

The auction house Spink & Son issued a statement calling this one of the largest hoards of 17th and 18th century English gold coins ever confirmed in Britain.

I love stories like this.

They should have kept their mouths shut though.

They could have sold a single coin now and then and avoided
the obvious problems that will come.

I agree. It is stupid to broadcast something like this.

I’m thinking...

There’s one for you, nineteen for me
Should five per cent appear too small
Be thankful I don’t take it all”

Hopefully it’s not old enough for the British government archaeologists to claim them like they do with Roman era treasure.

What did they say? 17th and 18th century coins? They look much older than that, like Roman coins.

I think the harp on the coat of arms makes it a UK coin, I think.

Yes especially in England. Isn’t their a law that states anything found on English land belongs to the crown? I remember that happened to to 2 guys who found coins on a farm and the government took the coins away.

I knew those lyrics sounded familiar.

It’s a coin of King James I - so after 1603.

They took them away after convicting them of hiding it from the government. In England, they appraise the value and give the finders a flat percentage. With that set-up, being honest is the best way to be.

I think you are right. I don’t think people actually own land in England, but it is more like a lease as long as they pay their taxes on it.

The guys you mention are probably still kicking themselves in the butt.

I think the crown has first dibs on found coins, but they have to pay the owner fair market value for the coins.

In a case where someone finds coins in a field, the guy with the metal detector and the farmer split the money.

Again, the government has first right of refusal.
