The fatal shooting of a young Democratic Party aide named Seth Rich early in the morning of July 10, 2016, brought incalculable loss to his parents.
Within days, Joel and Mary Rich then had to endure an unimaginable, additional blow: the eruption of a cottage industry of conspiracy theories and outright lies around their son's life and death. Police in Washington, D.C., never identified his killer, and there was a vacuum of reliable information. Hot takes, destructive speculation and false claims about Seth rocketed around the internet and found a warm embrace on many Fox News shows.
"We're just beside ourselves," Joel Rich says. "With all the international stories and all the national media, how do you live with that, when you know it's all false about your son and his legacy?"
Our interview represents the first public remarks the Riches have made since they reached a confidential settlement in fall 2020 with the Fox News Channel and its parent company, Fox Corp., over its role in peddling those false claims. Under the terms of that deal, they cannot directly speak about Fox or its stars.
As the Riches' experience shows, conspiracy theories can be brought to heel, but not without, in this case, a grievous emotional toll. Years later, the Riches' devastation endures, in part because of the pain inflicted by Fox. The network has pulled back from talking about Seth Rich. Yet Fox shows little sign of being chastened more broadly. Under the ultimate leadership of Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch, who control its parent company, Fox News continues to invite guests on its programs who embrace conspiracy theories. Some of its most popular stars openly promote false claims that have already been discredited.

Police say they believe Seth Rich's killing was the result of a botched robbery at gunpoint.
Of course, if the killer hasn’t been found, we can’t definitively say which (if any) of the theories might be correct.
This is simply untrue. and NPR knows it. Fox barely mentions Rich. Speculation has to do with how he was murdered and his job. And Fox has little to do with the speculation.
They used to say calling ‘Russian Collusion’ a hoax was a conspiracy theory.
Now we know it WAS a hoax.
NPR “cottage industry of conspiracy theories”
They claim that every time anyone tries to speak truth to power.
It you start catching flak it means you are over the target.
Seth was executed because he betrayed clinton and the dems after they blocked sanders from running for president.
“Police in Washington, D.C., never identified his killer...”
If the police have not identified a killer, it seems to me that nobody can say any theory about the matter is “false” with much certainty. You could say the theory is “unproven”, or even “unlikely”, but you probably can’t say it’s “false”.
“Police say they believe Seth Rich’s killing was the result of a botched robbery at gunpoint.”
And since this is Washington DC, any armed robbery suspect would probably be non-Caucasian and Seth Rich was Caucasian, it would be racist to pursue this case any further.
I feel for his family, but I also think that their loyalty to The Party is blinding them.
Please, Mr. Rich. Tell us how you know the rumors and "conspiracy theories" are all false. Or is that just a father defending his son without any proof whatsoever?
So...is the family satisfied it was a botched robbery attempt and that is the end of it?
The family just accepts it was a botched robbery attempt, and is angry anyone is questioning the lack of information on such an unusual murder, at such an unusual place, at such an unusual time?
Something doesn’t add up.
Strange this is coming up at a random time. Something must be about to drop.
The police say it was a “robbery” but nothing was taken.
Many people say it was a “hit” because it sure looks like a hit.
Let’s end that discussion.
Trump said the election of 2020 looked fraudulent because there is a lot of evidence of fraud.
The Democrats say it was honest, because they won.
Let’s end that discussion.
Fox used to have a Democrat player jerk on who said once that whoever leaked Hillary’s emails should be shot. Lol
Seth Rich’s parents must have made a mint off his murder by now. Maybe they spent it and are fishing for more? Someone should ask Biden what he thinks. He’ll probably say something that would cause a giant rabbit to pop out and lead him away again.
Of course the one person who knows who handed him the emails is locked up awaiting extradition. Julian will never live to tell it.
Gee, I’m shocked how loyal the members of “team blue” are..
Botched robbery? Where nothing was taken? Ok.
Looking for someone to sue.
It seems that they would be more upset that their son was murdered, and no one appears to have done anything about finding the killer.
Parents crying about DNC cannon fodder.
