…a masculine, pro-American, stridently non-woke blockbuster that has just blasted off to a $146 million opening weekend, which is well above predictions.
Based on review after review, Top Gun 2 did the wisest thing possible. Rather than apologize for being an 80’s “relic,” it embraced what everyone loved in 1986 and still loves today.

The ageless star [Cruise] is in full control of his film destiny, and he clearly helped “Maverick” avoid most, if not all, of the culture war booby traps.
No hand wringing over military might or extended emasculation of its rugged hero, for starters. No lectures on America’s imperfect past or gender inequality.
And, suffice to say, “Top Gun: Maverick” isn’t woke in the slightest. It is, though, a testament to American excellence and the ability to achieve a goal no matter the odds.
In other words, it didn’t do what James Bond did—turn itself into a mewling little pajama boy gerbil of a movie. It didn’t do what Star Wars did and pervert a romantic-adventure series into a shrill Womyn’s Studies lecture. Instead, Top Gun chose to respect human nature and remain what it was, what worked, and what normal people love. The audience sensed that, and now it’s over-performing and less than $10 million away from setting an all-time Memorial Day Weekend record.

You just know this is going to be a damn good movie when he steals the SR71 to set a speed record.
Tough to see the failing Val Kilmer - really tough. He’s one some great movies too.

I did notice they backed down on their initial censorship of the Taiwan and Japan flags on his jacket.
Early publicity pictures showed them changed to ChiCom pleasing flags.
But they are reportedly in the movie, same original jacket with the Taiwan/RoC and Japanese flags.

All I know is “ Last Samurai” one of my all time favorite movies!
I’d see it but I can’t tolerate Tom Cruise. I do have a favorite Tom Cruise movie though; “The Last Samurai”. I like it because Ken Watanabi steals the movie from him.
Had to go back to the original to see how a Penny fit in. That was a great line.
“Maverick” had by far the most interest of older audiences of any film in the Covid era. A majority (55 percent) was over 35. That is far different from most top-grossing films, even in pre-Covid times. For the current environment, it is a major victory.
“Maverick” audiences were 37 percent 18-34, with 34 percent non-white (less than other top titles) and 58 percent male
I will stand up front and make sure you don’t have to see it yourself :)
Ageless as in not just physical aging of the face but ageless as in never grows old. Like Trump said, Tom Cruise is the last true entertainer left in Hollywood.
